Chapter 1739: Chapter 1145: Speaking of the Truth

Second watch.

"I..." Hearing what Chuxia said, Zhao Qiliang also realized he’d just done something a bit thoughtless, so he gave a sheepish smile and looked at Zhang Ping, hoping the other man would help smooth things over for him.

Zhang Ping was honestly speechless. Why would the Division Commander’s Wife feel ill at ease? Wasn’t it because he, an outsider, was here? Now they wanted him to speak up—wasn’t that the same as openly admitting there was something fishy going on?

"I’ve got something to do over at Zhou Hanliang’s, you stay here and keep Chuxia company." Zhou Mikang showed up just in time and finally helped Zhang Ping out of the awkward spot. Zhang secretly let out a breath of relief, stepped back, and blended into the background.

After that little episode, the flush on Chuxia’s face faded as well. She simply rolled her eyes at Zhao Qiliang and turned into the tent. Knowing his little wife was only ignoring him because she was still shy, Mikang shook his head in amusement and lifted his feet to go find Zhou Hanliang.

"Xia..." Zhao Qiliang gave an embarrassed grin as he apologized to his younger sister. "I didn’t think it through. I just felt that you two hadn’t seen each other for so long, you ought to have some private time to talk, so... so I shut the door."

"But, no one else knew you were here. Only Ye Meiru came by. Letting her walk in on that is actually a good way to kill off those improper thoughts of hers, so she doesn’t stir up any messy nonsense to annoy people."

"Enough, you were doing it for my own good, I can’t be bothered to stay mad at you..." Chuxia shot Zhao Qiliang a glare but couldn’t help laughing. "Standing out here all this time, weren’t you so anxious you were about to catch fire? Ask whatever you want, I’ll tell you everything, hold nothing back."

"I wasn’t exactly anxious, I just didn’t want to be a third wheel in there getting in the way. I’d actually planned to leave first, but I was worried some messy people might come and disturb the peace."

"Xia, you don’t have to feel embarrassed either. You and the Division Commander haven’t seen each other for over a year. Meeting again all of a sudden, having a few private words is perfectly normal, isn’t it? If anyone dares to run their mouth, that just means they’re sick of staying here..."

Chuxia cut him off with a laugh: "Bro, if it’s like you say, then anyone who wants to get transferred out of here should hurry up and gossip, right? You think everyone here is so willing to keep staying on?"

"True enough..." Zhao Qiliang scratched his head, looking utterly embarrassed. "I’m really not explaining this well. The more I try to explain, the more of a mess my brain gets, and whatever comes out of my mouth just sounds like nonsense."

"Forget it, I won’t explain. Anyway, you understand what I mean. Over this past year here, I really have seen some girls with less than pure intentions, always trying to get close to the Division Commander, but his cold face makes them give up pretty fast."

"Up till now, the ones whose little schemes haven’t died out are only a handful. Now that you’re here, I figure their hopes will pretty much be completely crushed. Zhao Weiwei, Fang Tingxiang, Ye Meiru—just keep a close eye on those three, that’s enough. The rest you can basically ignore."

Chuxia looked at Zhao Qiliang, puzzled: "Bro, how obvious are these people, that you’ve got them all pegged so clearly?"

"Sometimes we seize some good food, and then there’s the occasional supply on our end, or stuff their families mail over. These people keep it back and sneak it over to the Division Commander."

"Do you know how many pairs of eyes are watching?" Zhao Qiliang sighed. "Stay here a while and you’ll see. These days the fighting’s not intense, so the food and lodging are still bearable."

"Once a battle really starts, eating in the wind and sleeping in the open is normal. And whether it’s the officers and soldiers or the medical team, nobody’s going to get a proper night’s sleep or a proper meal."

"By then, when you see food you’ll just want to stuff it straight into your own stomach, and when it’s your turn to sleep you’ll be out cold the instant your head hits the pillow. How would anyone still have the time or energy to carry goodies off to someone else? Or stand outside a tent waiting instead of sleeping?"

"Once or twice, fine. But to keep it up, all the way till now—if you tell me they don’t have some extra little agenda, I’d never believe it, not even if you beat me to death. So you have to keep an eye on those few."

"And it’s not just watching whether they’ll do anything to the Division Commander. The key is you’re going to be working with them now, so you need to watch whether they’ll pull any tricks on you."

"Whether it’s food, drinks, or where you sleep, you’ve got to be doubly careful, Xia..." Zhao Qiliang looked at his sister with utter seriousness. "Don’t think I’m just trying to scare you. Some women really will do things you’d never imagine just to get what they want."

"Better safe than sorry. Even if people say you’re overly suspicious, that’s still better than suffering a loss and regretting it afterward. Normally, other than coming over to the Division Commander’s, stick with Wu Jingbo and Zhao Bingbing, don’t split up."

"I know the Division Commander must have already reminded you, and told others as well, maybe even assigned someone to protect you. But relying on other people for everything still isn’t as good as being careful yourself, right?"
