Meanwhile, Liu Gui was stopped on his way and summoned to the leadership’s office.

After a dressing-down that lasted a full half-hour, he finally emerged from the office, his face ashen.

He went straight to find Qin Wenhao.

He looked completely apologetic. "Qin Tuan, I’m so sorry. I truly had no idea my wife would say something like that."

Qin Wenhao shot him a sideways glare. "Liu Gui, this is the last time. If your wife bad-mouths my wife again, I won’t let it slide so easily."

"I’m terribly sorry. I’ll have her go back to her hometown tomorrow." But Liu Gui’s words did nothing to improve Qin Wenhao’s expression.

’What does Liu Gui sending his wife back to her hometown have to do with me?’

’So what if his wife is gone?’

’The damage to my wife’s reputation is real.’

Done with Liu Gui, Qin Wenhao turned and walked away.

He still had to get home and make chicken soup for his wife.

When he got home, he was just about to kill the chicken when Fu Mingxue heard the commotion and came out.

"Making chicken soup tonight?"

Qin Wenhao nodded. "Yeah. Did I disturb you?"

"Not at all." Fu Mingxue looked at him. "What’s this about the Liu family? Did she say something about me earlier?"

’Even though I couldn’t hear what was said, judging by the panicked look in her eyes I saw when I got back—I’m guessing it had something to do with me.’

Qin Wenhao’s expression faltered. "She just likes to run her mouth. Don’t pay her any mind—"

But Fu Mingxue didn’t miss the subtle shift in his expression.

"Is it about me not being able to have children?"

"How did you know? Did someone come gossip to your face again?" The mere thought that someone would dare say such a thing to his wife...

...made Qin Wenhao’s expression turn thunderous.

"No one said anything to me. I just guessed. It’s not a hard guess, after all. It’s not like I’ve given anyone else anything to gossip about. The only thing they think they have on me is that we’ve been married for so long and I still haven’t had a child, isn’t it?"

’It wasn’t that she was completely flawless, but there really wasn’t any other chink in her armor for people to attack.’

’The only one was this business about having a child.’

Now, she had her confirmation from Qin Wenhao.

’Still, she was truly exasperated—did these people have nothing better to do?’

’What business was it of theirs whether she had children or not?’

’If it weren’t for her own deep-seated desire to have a biological child...’

’...she would have been perfectly fine not having one at all.’

’After all, they already had that adorable pair of twins at home.’

Qin Wenhao was once again struck by his wife’s intelligence.

"Liu Gui is making his wife go back tomorrow. After this, I doubt anyone will bring this up again. You don’t have to be angry, dear."

Fu Mingxue rolled her eyes when she heard that.

"What could I possibly be angry about?" ’It’s not like I’m actually infertile.’

’And even if I were, I wouldn’t get angry just because people talked about it.’

She was, however, surprised that Sister in law Liu was being sent back to her hometown.

"What about their two children, then?"

"Dear, you’re just too kind. What happens to their children is Liu Gui’s problem to sort out; we don’t need to worry about it. And you shouldn’t feel burdened by this at all, dear. You reap what you sow."

His words left Fu Mingxue speechless once again.

’I was just asking. Why would I feel burdened?’

’I have no sympathy for people who try to harm me.’

"Dear, I’m going to prepare the chicken now."

"Alright. I’ll go back to my book, then."

Fu Mingxue had no intention of making a polite, empty offer to help.

’After all, she really didn’t want to get her hands dirty.’
