President Qu glared at him.

"What’s all this about eldest and second sons? Don’t give me that flowery nonsense. Besides, was that house your father’s? It clearly belonged to your second brother. What does it have to do with you?"

"He still has a daughter. As her uncle, instead of taking care of your second brother’s only child, you’re trying to steal her house. How can you call yourself her uncle?"

Wang Dacheng’s face went pale at his words, but he showed no sign of remorse.

"──President Qu, that’s not right. How am I not fit to be her uncle? You know the rules in our village. Daughters aren’t eligible to inherit property."

"My second brother has been dead for years. If I hadn’t helped her out at all, would she have been able to grow up?"

"And what’s more, I was worried she’d have nowhere to go, so I went to great lengths to find a good match for her. As her uncle, I’ve done all this for her. Is that still not enough?"

Seeing that he was not only unrepentant but also self-righteous, President Qu couldn’t stand to listen to another word.

He slammed his hand on the desk, and the sound made Wang Dacheng jump.

"Wang Dacheng, is this what you call a good match for your niece? An idiot──and you want to push her into that fire pit? And what year do you think this is? The girl doesn’t want to get married, so you lock her up? You’ve got some nerve for a brigade leader."

"Don’t you know that’s against the law?"

Wang Dacheng’s expression stiffened.

"H-how is that against the law? So what if the guy isn’t all there? His family is well-off. Once my niece marries him, she’ll at least never have to worry about food or clothing again. She’ll be living the good life! These days, isn’t marrying a man who can provide for you the best a woman can hope for?"

"As for locking her up—that’s just not true. That girl’s been a pathological liar since she was little. She’s just spouting nonsense."

Just then, a voice suddenly cut in.

"I am not a pathological liar! You and your wife locked me up for three days without food or water, just to force me to marry that fool. Besides, if the Li Family is as great as you say, why don’t you marry your own daughter off to them?"

When Wang Dacheng saw who had walked in, his face immediately flushed with anger.

"Wang Lihong, you damn girl! You actually ran here to tattle on me. And after we nearly turned the whole mountain upside down looking for you, terrified something had happened!"

"If I hadn’t run, wouldn’t you and your wife have ruined my life?" Wang Lihong shot back, glaring at him defiantly.

"You... you’re biting the hand that feeds you! A family like the Li Family, and you’re turning them down," Wang Dacheng fumed.

If President Qu hadn’t been there, he would have already marched over and slapped her.

"Didn’t you hear what I just said? Since you think the Li Family is such a good match, why don’t you have your own daughter marry into it? In any case, someone else can marry him, because I won’t. You’re using your position as brigade leader to steal my family’s house, and I’m going to report you."

This time, Wang Dacheng couldn’t hold back. ’When has my authority ever been challenged like this?’

Furious, he immediately raised his hand to strike her.

"Wang Dacheng, stop!" President Qu hadn’t expected him to actually try and hit her.

But someone else was a step ahead of him, grabbing Wang Dacheng’s hand.

Wang Dacheng felt as if his wrist was about to snap. He glared at the person who had grabbed him. "You fucking let go of—"

The last word died in his throat as he saw what the person was wearing.
