Qi Chengliang looked at Chu Lingxiu as he said this. After he spoke, it wasn’t just Chu Lingxiu who was curious about what he had to say; Gu Shuxin also glanced at him in surprise.

’Since when did Qi Chengliang have something he needed to say to Chu Lingxiu?’

’Although Chu Lingxiu and Qi Chengliang knew each other, it was only because of me. They weren’t close. And yet... I had a nagging feeling that whatever he was about to say had something to do with me.’

"Whatever it is, just say it."

Chu Lingxiu truly wasn’t familiar with Qi Chengliang. All she knew was that the man in front of her was the suitor Gu Shuxin was always rejecting. Beyond that, she didn’t know much about him at all.

"Shuxin has accepted my pursuit. As of today, we’re officially together!"

"What did you say?"

"What did you say?"

The two nearly identical, astonished cries came from Chu Lingxiu and Gu Shuxin simultaneously.

Chu Lingxiu looked at Qi Chengliang, then turned to Gu Shuxin. Her brow was deeply furrowed, and the fists at her sides were clenched tight.

Chu Lingxiu didn’t doubt Qi Chengliang’s words. After all, no one would joke about such a thing, especially with Gu Shuxin standing right there.

And precisely because she didn’t doubt him, Chu Lingxiu felt even more disappointed in Gu Shuxin. Just a few days ago, Gu Shuxin had been going on about how much she liked Lu Cheng, yet now...

Meanwhile, Gu Shuxin was staring at Qi Chengliang in utter shock. ’Just a moment ago, I was so sure he’d listen to me,’ she thought. ’I never imagined he’d be audacious enough to say something like that.’

’When did I ever accept his pursuit? Since when were the two of us together?’

’None of that ever happened!’

’Qi Chengliang was nothing more than a profligate rich kid. His family might be wealthy, but with his dissolute lifestyle, he had zero chance of ever inheriting the family business. How could I possibly be interested in someone like him!’

"Qi Chengliang..."

Gu Shuxin was about to argue, to curse him out even, but the moment she opened her mouth, Qi Chengliang interrupted her.

"Shuxin, I’m sorry. I know you wanted to wait for the perfect moment to tell Miss Chu, but I was just so excited and happy that I couldn’t help but blurt it out. You’re not mad at me, are you?"

As Qi Chengliang spoke, he genuinely looked overjoyed and excited. When he delivered the final line, "You’re not mad at me, are you?", he looked at Gu Shuxin with an expression that was both pleading and worried.

"I..."

Thrown by Qi Chengliang’s words, Gu Shuxin was momentarily speechless. It wasn’t that she had forgiven him; rather, she sensed something odd in his expression and tone as he spoke.

’It was as if... as if he was threatening me!’

’Yes, that was it—a threat! But what could Qi Chengliang possibly threaten me with? What leverage could he have?’

Gu Shuxin fixed a scrutinizing gaze on Qi Chengliang. He was still smiling as he looked back at her, before pointedly glancing at Chu Lingxiu beside them.

It was as if a bomb had gone off in Gu Shuxin’s head. She understood. She understood where that feeling of being threatened had come from, and exactly what it meant.

’Qi Chengliang really was threatening me! He knew about my situation with Chu Lingxiu, knew I was trying to curry favor with her, and he even knew about the lies I’d told her. That’s why he said what he did—it was completely intentional.’
