Snow was starting to pick up in District 2. It fell in a steady, silent stream through the frigid night air, dusting the scorched grass of the backyard. Standing over the battered, bleeding body of Orson, the shadow looked down with a cold, mocking smile.
"You know," the shadow said quietly, the fabric over his mouth muffling his voice as his gloved hands suddenly began to breathe fire, "I have always wondered what the Storm Saint actually cares about."
With a casual flick of his wrist, the shadow hurled a dense ball of crackling, electric flame behind him. The burning projectile shattered through the broken dining room window, detonating against the heavy drapes and wooden beams. Fire instantly roared to life inside the condo, hungrily licking up the walls.
"I can feel her presence upstairs," the intruder murmured, stepping closer to Orson. "And I’m really curious about what she’ll do. Will she swallow that legendary pride and scream for help... or will she choose that pride and burn? Aren’t you curious to find out?"
Orson lay in the dirt, his blood staining the fresh snow crimson.
He had only been in this strange, brutal world for two days, but he had already lived through a lifetime of suffering. In his past life, his days were defined by endless war, bloodshed, and the lonely pursuit of power. But what he had experienced in this new world was different. There were no grand battlefields here, no sect massacres. Just a quiet life. The warm, soft evenings. The gentle peace that Eloise had always dreamed of—the peace he was finally beginning to taste beside Lenora.
He looked past the shadow at the house, watching the amber light of the flames flicker violently through the upper windows.
Lenora.
He had to move. He had to stop this. And that meant breaking the monster standing between him and the door.
Gritting his teeth against the agony screaming through his cracked ribs, Orson jammed the tip of his Storm Saint Blade deep into the dirt. Using the divine steel as a crutch, he dragged his broken, bloodied frame back onto his feet.
The shadow watched him with a tilt of his head, unbothered. "You know, for a guy holding a blade with enough raw power to level this entire district, you sure don’t know how to use it."
It was a strange thing. Standing right in front of him, the shadow couldn’t sense a single drop of Astral energy coming from Orson. Even his system interface, an absolute artifact of the realm, failed to detect any Class or Rank from the man. It was bizarre—a complete anomaly.
Not that it matters, the shadow thought, his eyes narrowing behind his mask. I want Lenora to suffer. I want her to watch everything burn the way I did for her mistakes. And this useless husband isn’t going to stop me.
Orson stood swaying in the snow, his vision swimming with blood as he desperately searched his mind. He had four close friends in this city, but none of their fighting styles, physiques, or energy signatures matched the murderer before him. Who was this man? Why was he doing this?
He didn’t have time to solve the riddle. Orson tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword and surged forward.
The shadow met him halfway. His hands were engulfed in a terrifying combination of roaring fire and snapping blue electricity. Yet, weirdly enough, the heat and current were entirely generated by the thin black gloves he wore—the fabric itself remained completely unburned. What a strange device, Orson noted distantly as steel met flaming fists.
BOOM!
The force of their collision sent a shockwave tearing through the backyard. Behind them, the fire inside the condo raged out of control, dark smoke billowing into the snowy sky as the structure began to turn black. The clash turned into an intense, chaotic dance through the snow. The extreme heat radiating from the shadow’s fists melted the falling snow into clouds of blinding steam, while stray sparks ignited the surrounding trees, turning the entire yard into an arena of fire and ice.
Orson fought back with everything he had, drawing upon centuries of refined sword techniques. But bound to the physical limits of a mid-stage Qi Gathering cultivator, he couldn’t unleash the world-shattering domain slashes of his past. To an outside observer, his swings were merely exceptionally fast, sharp, and precise.
And it wasn’t enough.
The fight rapidly devolved from a duel into a nightmare of pure brutality.
The shadow dodged a high slash, slipped past Orson’s guard, and drove a flaming fist directly into Orson’s side.
SCHAAK!
The impact sounded like a slab of meat hitting a red-hot iron griddle. The superheated gloves instantly seared through Orson’s clothes, scorching his skin and cooking the flesh underneath in a fraction of a second. The sickening smell of burnt blood and charred meat filled the air as the kinetic force threw Orson off balance.
Screaming through gritted teeth, Orson tried to force his way onto the offensive, refusing to stay on the defensive. He rushed forward, executing a sudden, diagonal strike meant to take the shadow’s head.
He read the timing wrong.
The shadow ducked under the arc with terrifying speed, slamming a palm upward into Orson’s elbow to redirect the blade, then followed through with a heavy, two-handed shove to Orson’s chest. Orson stumbled back, his boots tearing up the bloody snow, but he didn’t relent. He lunged again—only to be met with a brutal, relentless barrage.
BOOM! BOOM! CLANG!
Fire and lightning rained down on Orson’s body. He raised his blade to block, but the shadow’s sheer speed overwhelmed him. A lightning-laced hook caught Orson across the jaw, snapping his head back and spraying teeth and blood into the air. Another flaming fist buried itself straight into his abdomen, the localized explosion bursting his blood vessels and sending a wave of agony through his internal organs.
Orson moved like a dying man, his clothes reduced to tattered, blackened rags, his skin covered in a gruesome mix of third-degree burns and deep, purple contusions. The shadow carried a few shallow cuts across his arms where Orson’s blade had grazed him, but they were nothing compared to the ruined state of the cultivator.
Beyond the burning yard, the dead of night was shattered. Neighbors from adjacent properties began pouring out onto their balconies and streets, pointing in horror at the towering inferno consuming the condo.
"Call the enforcers! Call the local feds!" someone screamed from down the block.
Panicked bystanders pulled out their communication devices, pressing buttons frantically—but every screen flickered with static. A localized signal jammer had completely isolated the property. No help was coming.
Back on the blood-soaked lawn, Orson wasn’t just losing the fight. He was being methodically torn apart.
His vision was fading to black at the edges. His lungs burned with every ragged breath, inhaled smoke and hot ash scorching his throat. He could hear the wooden roof of the condo groaning above the roar of the flames, on the verge of collapsing into the second floor.
Lenora is still up there, his mind screamed through the haze of agony. She’s trapped. I have to get to her.
With a guttural roar, Orson pooled every remaining droplet of his Qi into his legs and thrust his Storm Saint Blade forward in a final, desperate charge.
