Akira POV

The dream pulled me under without warning.

One moment I was warm and safe in bed with Kael’s arm around my waist. The next moment the world changed. A cold stone appeared under my feet.

The air grew thick and heavy. The light turned a dull gray that made every shadow look deeper than it should.

I stood in the Shinigami’s dungeon. I knew the place at once. The same wide empty floor. The same high walls that disappeared into darkness.

The same pressure that sat on my skin like a second weight. Fear rose in my chest before I could stop it. Confusion followed right behind the fear because I had not chosen to come here.

This time the Death God was not standing at a distant threshold. It stood right in front of me. Tall. Still. Its presence filled the space between us until breathing felt harder than it should.

Curiosity colored the way it looked down at me. The look was not the same cold judgment from the real gate contact. It felt more focused. More interesting. More personal.

My body locked in place. Terror and shock mixed together and held me still. I wanted to step back. My feet refused to move.

The still place I had found during mana practice felt far away and unreachable. Panic started to build in my stomach.

The Shinigami tilted its head to a small degree. The curious look deepened. Then it opened the shape that served as its mouth and spoke.

"Akira Renshi"

The sound of it hit me like a physical blow. Surprise and dread crashed through my chest at the same time. Almost no one used my full name.

Hearing it in that voice, in that place, made the dream feel more real than any dream should feel. Horror spread under my skin.

The pressure around me increased. The Death God kept staring. Curiosity and something like recognition sat in its gaze. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat and in my ears.

Panic rose higher. I tried to call on my mana. Nothing answered. The dream would not let me have any power.

The Shinigami spoke my full name a second time. The sound echoed off the stone walls. Each syllable felt heavy and exact. Fear turned sharp and cold inside my chest.

I opened my mouth to answer or to refuse or to ask why. No voice came out. Helplessness joined the fear and made my hands shake.

The gray light grew darker at the edges. The Death God’s form seemed to lean closer without actually moving. The curious look never changed. It was studying me. It was confirming something.

The same sense of being fully seen from the real contact returned and made my skin crawl with fresh horror and deep exposure.

I tried to step back again. The stone under my feet held me like glue. Frustration and terror mixed until my breath came in short, useless pulls. The dungeon felt too real.

The air tasted too real. The sound of my own name in that voice felt too real. Disbelief and dread sat heavy in my stomach.

The Shinigami raised one long hand. It did not touch me. It only held the hand out as if measuring the space between us. More pressure settled on my shoulders and chest.

I felt small and exposed and completely known. Shame and fear and a strange reluctant awe moved through me in tangled waves. I hated the awe. I could not stop it.

It said my full name a third time. The word landed deeper than before. Something inside the dream cracked under the weight of the sound.

I jolted awake with a sharp gasp.

My body jerked hard in the bed. Air rushed into my lungs like I had been drowning. My heart hammered against my ribs so fast it hurt. Sweat covered my back and neck and chest.

The terror from the dream followed me straight into the waking world and refused to leave. Shock and leftover panic made my limbs feel weak.

The sudden movement woke Kael at once. His arm tightened around me and his body tensed with alert readiness.

"Akira?" His voice was rough with sleep and rising alarm. "What is wrong? Talk to me."

I could not answer yet. My breathing was too fast and too shallow. Panic still gripped my chest like a tight fist.

The sound of the Shinigami saying my full name repeated inside my head and made the fear worse. Tears of pure fright burned at the corners of my eyes.

Kael sat up and pulled me fully against him. His arms wrapped around my back and shoulders in a firm, steady hold.

One of his hands cupped the back of my head and pressed my face to his neck. The solid warmth of his skin grounded me a little.

"Breathe with me," he said. His voice stayed low and clear and close. "Slow. In through your nose. Out through your mouth. I have you. You are safe. You are in our bed. Breathe."

I tried to follow his instructions. The first attempts failed. My lungs still felt locked by the leftover terror. Frustration and helplessness mixed with the fear and made my shoulders shake.

Kael did not let go. He kept one hand moving in slow circles on my back and kept speaking in the same calm tone.

"In. Hold it. Out. Again. Match my chest. Feel it rise. Feel it fall. You are here with me. The dream is over. Nothing is taking you."

Gradually the air started to move easier. I pulled in a longer breath and let it out in a shaky rush. Relief began to trickle in under the fear, but the shock remained strong and cold.

The dream had felt too real. The voice felt too real. My full name in that place had felt too real. Disbelief sat heavy beside the relief.

Kael held me tighter. His cheek rested against my hair. Protectiveness and worry radiated from him in steady waves.

I clung to his shirt with both hands and focused on the solid warmth of his body and the steady beat of his heart.

"It was the Shinigami," I managed at last. My voice sounded thin and rough and broken. "The Death God. I was back in its dungeon. But this time it stood right in front of me. It looked at me with curiosity. Then it said my full name. Three times.

It felt completely real. The stone was cold. The pressure was the same. I could not move. I could not speak. I could not use my mana."

Kael’s arms tensed around me for a second. Anger and fear for me moved through his body before he forced them down.

His hand kept stroking my back without stopping. The constant touch helped the panic loosen its grip one finger at a time.

"It was a dream," he said. The words were firm, as if he needed to hear them too. "You are awake now. You are in my arms. Nothing is taking you. I will not let anything take you."

I nodded against his neck, but the shock did not leave. "It did not feel like a normal dream. When it said my name I felt the same exposure I felt at the gate.

The same sense of being fully seen and measured. I woke up still hearing the voice. It is still in my head."

Horror and lingering dread sat heavy in my stomach. I pressed closer to Kael and tried to use his steady heartbeat to push the memory back.

The effort only half worked. The curious look in the Death God’s eyes stayed clear behind my own eyelids every time I blinked.

Kael shifted us so he could lean back against the headboard while still holding me across his lap. The new position made me feel smaller and safer at the same time.

He pulled the blanket up around my shoulders and locked his arms around me again. Safety began to build a thin wall between me and the dream.

"I have you," he repeated. "Stay here and breathe. The dream cannot follow you into this room. I will not let it. You are safe. You are loved. You are home."

Gratitude and love rose under fear. I buried my face in his shoulder and concentrated on the smell of his skin and the strength of his hold. Safety slowly grew stronger.

The wall against the memory grew a little thicker. The process was slow. He gave me every minute of it without rush or complaint.

We sat like that for a long time. My breathing finally matched his. The worst of the panic faded into a tired, shaky calm. Shock remained. The realism of the dream had shaken something deep inside me.

I had faced the Shinigami once while awake and survived. Facing it again in a dream that felt equally real left me unsteady and afraid of closing my eyes. Fear of sleep itself began to grow.

Kael kissed the top of my head and then my temple and then the side of my face. Each kiss carried his care and quiet anger at whatever had frightened me.

His hand never stopped moving on my back. The constant gentle motion kept me anchored in the present.

"Do you want to talk more about it?" he asked. "Or do you only want to sit?"

"Sit for now," I whispered. Honesty and vulnerability colored the words. "That voice is still too clear. The curious look is still too clear. I need both of them to fade a little before I can say more."

"All right." He adjusted the blanket and kept me pressed against his chest. "We will sit as long as you need. I am not going anywhere."

Comfort and exhaustion moved through me in slow waves. The dream had stolen the peace of the still place I had found earlier.

In its place sat the cold memory of my full name spoken by a Death God that looked curious instead of indifferent. The change felt important and dangerous. I did not know what it meant.

The not-knowing fed the leftover fear and made my hands stay tight in his shirt.

Kael’s heartbeat stayed steady under my ear. I focused on that sound and nothing else. Love and safety slowly grew stronger than the shock.

The process took a long time. He gave me every minute without complaint or pressure or questions I could not yet answer.

Eventually the dark window showed the first thin light of approaching morning. My body felt heavy and drained.

The dream still lived behind my eyes, but the terror had softened into wary unease and deep tiredness.

"I am scared to sleep again," I admitted. Honesty and vulnerability and leftover fear colored the words. "What if I go back there?

What if it says my name again? What if the dream becomes more real the next time?"

Kael’s arms tightened until I could feel the strength in them. "Then I will wake you. Every time. You are not alone with it. If the dream returns, I will pull you out. That is a promise. I will keep that promise."

Trust rose under fear. I nodded and let my body relax another degree. The promise did not erase the shock, but it gave me a rope to hold onto in the dark. Gratitude and love mixed with the remaining unease.

We stayed awake together as the room slowly lightened. Kael did not let me go. I did not ask him to.

The feel of his body wrapped around mine was the only thing that kept the curious eyes of the Shinigami from feeling too close. Safety lived in his arms. I stayed inside it.

The dream had been too real. The name had been too clear. The fear had followed me into waking and still sat in my chest like a cold stone.

But Kael’s hold was real too. His voice was real. His promise was real. His love was real.

I clung to those truths and waited for the last of the night to finish fading. The Death God had spoken my full name in a place that should have been only memory.

I did not know what would come of it. For now I only knew the safety of the arms around me and the slow, steady work of learning how to breathe again without the sound of that voice in my ears.

Kael pressed one more kiss to my hair and whispered that I was safe. I closed my eyes and chose to believe him. The shock remained. The fear remained. But I was not alone with either of them. That fact made the morning possible.
