Kael’s POV

I started arriving earlier without deciding to announce it.

The training yard is mostly empty in that first stretch of morning, the air still cool enough that breath shows if you stand still too long. I take the far corner the way I always have, the one that lets me see the entrances and the open ground at the same time.

When Akira appears, sometimes only a few minutes after me, sometimes longer, I do not make a point of the timing. I simply stay.

The sessions run longer than they used to. I let them. When a correction needs more than words I step in and show the movement myself, once, cleanly, then step back and let him take it apart and put it back together in his own body.

He never comments on the change.

He just receives whatever I offer and applies it with that same quiet, focused intensity he brings to everything. No raised eyebrows. No questions about why I am suddenly spending the extra time.

No attempt to name what is happening between us in the space of the yard. He absorbs the adjustment, tests it, refines it, and keeps going. The significance of it is allowed to sit there unspoken, true without needing to be pointed at.

I like that more than I expected to.

There is a particular relief in it. Something important can exist without being turned into a conversation, without being weighed and labeled and made to justify itself out loud. It simply becomes part of the morning. I show up. He meets me there. The work happens. The rest of the world can call it whatever it wants; between us it does not require a name.

The first few days I catch myself watching him more than I need to for the sake of instruction. The way he settles into a stance after I demonstrate a shift in weight. The small, precise adjustments he makes without being told twice.

The faint flush that rises along his throat when the work gets hard enough to demand real effort. Want still lives under my skin, has lived there since the night in his room, since the almost, since the way he opened for me and then later sat on the edge of the bed and gave me the only truth he could afford.

That want has not gone quiet. It surfaces when he moves a certain way, when his breathing changes, when the fabric of his training clothes clings after a long set. I let it surface and then I set it aside. The yard is not the place for it. Work is the place for it.

Protectiveness moves through me in a steadier current. Every time he takes a correction and makes it his own I feel the same low, fierce satisfaction. He is already capable. The system, whatever it is, whatever it has been doing to him for years has made sure of that.

But his capability can be sharpened. Reach can be extended. If something is coming for him, if the missions are building toward an endpoint I still cannot see, then I want his body to know as many ways of surviving it as I can put into his hands. I do not say any of that. I simply stay later. I demonstrate instead of only describing. I watch him absorb it.

Some mornings the silence between us feels almost gentle. We move through forms side by side. The only sounds are footfalls, the soft rush of breath, the occasional quiet contact of practice weapons. I correct an angle of the hip with two fingers against his side and feel the heat of him through the cloth. He adjusts. Neither of us speaks.

The touch ends. The work continues. Later I will think about the brief contact longer than I should. At the moment I keep my focus where it belongs.

Affection arrives in quieter waves. It surprises me sometimes with its softness. I have always preferred clarity and forward motion. Softness was never the primary language I trusted. But watching him refuse to turn the extra training into a discussion, watching him simply accept the gift of it and use it, settles something in my chest that I did not realize had been restless.

He understands the shape of what I am doing without forcing me to explain the shape. That kind of understanding is rare. I find myself protective of it in the same way I am protective of him.

There are moments when the residual heat from that night in his room rises close enough to the surface that I have to step back an extra half-pace after a demonstration.

The memory of his mouth, the way he had looked underneath me, the unfinished want that still lives in both of us, it has not been resolved. We have not spoken of it directly since. The confession about the missions sat between us instead, heavy and necessary. The quiet afterward, with his head against my shoulder, had been its own kind of claim.

But the body remembers what the conversation interrupted. When he turns a certain way in the morning light and the line of his throat is exposed, the memory returns with enough force that I have to breathe through it and return to the work.

I do not push. He has given me what he can for now. The rest will come in due time, the way he said. My task is simpler and harder at once: keep showing up, keep sharpening what can be sharpened, keep standing close enough that when the next mission or the next unnamed threshold arrives I am already in position.

One morning the yard is emptier than usual. A low mist still clings to the far edge of the ground. Akira arrives with his hair still slightly damp from washing, the collar of his training top open at the throat. We begin without discussion.

I take him through a sequence that demands faster weight transfer and tighter recovery. When he loses the line on the third repetition I step in, show the movement at half speed, then full, then step away again. He watches with complete attention. The second time through he nearly has it. The third time it sits in his body like it has always been there.

I feel a pulse of pure, uncomplicated satisfaction.

He glances up. For a moment our eyes hold. Something moves in his expression, acknowledgment, maybe, or simply the quiet recognition that the work is landing. He does not smile. He does not speak. He only nods once, small and precise, and resets for the next set.

That single nod undoes something in me more effectively than a longer conversation would have.

I look away first, not because I need the distance but because the feeling that rises is larger than the yard can easily hold. Tenderness, sharp and unexpected. Pride.

The deep, possessive certainty that I will keep doing this for as long as he will let me. That I will keep finding new edges to show him, new ways to make his body more difficult to break, until whatever is coming meets something stronger than it planned for.

The session stretches. Sweat darkens the spine of his shirt. My own breathing sits heavier in my chest. When we finally stop, the sun has cleared the low wall and the mist has burned off. We stand a few paces apart, cooling down in the same silence we worked in. I pass him the water flask without comment.

He takes it, drinks, returns it. Our fingers brush. Neither of us pretends the contact did not happen. Neither of us turns it into more than it is in the moment.

Walking back toward the main complex I become aware of the steady shape of my own feelings, not as a list but as a current that has been running under the entire morning.

Want, still present, still fucking patient.

Protectiveness that has nowhere to go except into the next early arrival, the next demonstration, the next hour spent making him harder to touch.

Affection that no longer startles me when it surfaces.

A deep, private compatibility with the way he is letting this matter without requiring that we speak its name.

And underneath everything, the same resolve that settled into me the night he told me about the missions: whatever is preparing him, whatever elevation or threshold or unnamed endpoint is approaching, I intend to meet it standing close enough that it has to go through me first.

He walks a little ahead of me on the path. The morning light catches in his hair. I watch the easy, balanced way he moves, already incorporating the adjustments from the last hour and feel the quiet, fierce satisfaction of it settle deeper.

He does not look back. He does not need to.

The work is already true between us.

I keep following, matching my pace to his, and let the rest of the day arrive whenever it is ready.
