Resonance System: X Marks The Bond

Chapter 81 Episode 81: Prayer

Kael’s POV

He keeps saying it. A thin, broken thread of sound that slips out whenever consciousness flickers back for a few seconds. Please.

Sometimes it is barely audible. Sometimes it is clearer, desperate, like he is still asking something of the dark. His fingers twitch against the sheet. His brow furrows.

Then the pain or the exhaustion pulls him under again and the word fades until the next shallow rise toward the surface.

I sit on the edge of the cot and hold his hand and I do not know what else to do.

His rib is stabilised. The lacerations are cleaned and closed. The suppressant is working as well as anything temporary can. His mana is still banked too low to accelerate the healing the way an A-rank body should.

I have checked every reading twice. I have adjusted the supports. I have wiped the sweat from his temples and the residual blood from the edge of his hairline. There is nothing left in the practical list of actions, and the absence of further actions is its own kind of torment.

Please.

The word scrapes something raw open inside me.

I lean closer, forehead nearly touching his. "I’m here, baby. I’ve got you. You’re safe."

I do not know if he hears it. The next time his eyes open they are glassy and unfocused, fixed on something I cannot see. His lips move again. The same plea. I stroke my thumb across the back of his hand and feel how cold his fingers still are.

Distraught is too small a word for what moves through me.

Fear is at the centre of it. It was thick, almost animalistic, and fucking relentless. I have faced ranked threats and collapsing zones and the kind of political knives that end careers or lives.

None of it prepared me for the particular terror of watching him drift away and not being able to follow. Every shallow breath feels provisional. Every moment of stillness between one muttered please and the next stretches too long.

I keep counting the seconds until his chest rises again, as if the act of counting could force the outcome I need.

Helplessness braids itself through the fear until I can no longer tell them apart. I am a man who solves problems. I gather information, remove obstacles, force results. None of those tools reach the place where he is right now.

I cannot cut the pain out of him. I cannot drag the residual shock from his system with my hands. I cannot make the mana regenerate faster by sheer refusal to accept the current rate. All I can do is stay, and heavens help me but staying feels like the weakest offering I have ever made.

The anger burns inside me, at whoever put him on that service road, at the system that keeps shaping him toward unnamed thresholds, at myself for not being close enough when the attack came.

The anger has nowhere to go. It turns inward and sharpens. I should have been there. I should have felt the threat sooner. I should have rewritten the part of him that still defaults to surviving alone until the cost becomes visible only after the damage is done.

Beneath all of it is the love, and the love is what undoes me most completely.

I look at his face. It was pale, scarred, still carrying the faint tension of pain even in sleep and the future I have been building rearranges itself into a single unbearable question.

What if this is the night the margin runs out? What if the next time his breathing slows it does not pick up again? What if the quiet, stubborn promise he carries finally meets a force that does not care about promises?

I try to push the thought away. It returns with more force.

A life without him.

The image forms against my will. Mornings in the yard with no one to talk to. The condo I have already prepared standing empty of his scent and his careful quiet presence. The formal question I planned to ask remaining forever unasked.

His mother’s blessing turning into a conversation about loss instead of a beginning. The word baby left with no one to hear it. Decades stretching forward in which I continue to function, continue to command, continue to exist, while the centre of every private hope I have allowed myself is simply gone.

My eyes burn.

I do not remember the last time I cried. The sensation is foreign enough that for a second I do not recognise the heat gathering along my lower lids. Then the first tear slips free and tracks down my face, and the dam I did not know I was still holding gives way.

I bend over our joined hands and let the grief move through me in hard, silent waves. The tears fall onto his fingers and the sheet. I do not wipe them away. There is no performance left in me, no control worth preserving.

The thought of a world that continues without him has cracked something open that will not close again tonight.

When the first surge eases I stay bent there, forehead against the back of his hand, breathing unevenly. The prayer rises without strategy or theology.

I have never been a man who asked the heavens for anything. I have trusted logic, brute force, leverage, and the sharp edge of my own will. Prayer belonged to other people; the desperate, the devout, the ones who had already exhausted every earthly option.

Guess I am those things now.

I close my eyes and shape the words inside my own skull because my voice feels too broken for any speech at the moment.

’Do not take him. I will do whatever is required. I will stand between him and every threshold still coming. I will burn the contracts, the senders, the system’s quiet designs if that is the price. Just let him stay. Let him wake. Let him keep the promise he made in the dark. I am asking. I do not know how to ask, but I am asking.’

The silence that follows is absolute. There was no answering shift in the air. No sudden improvement in his readings. Only the low hum of the recovery suite and the fragile rhythm of his breathing.

I do not feel foolish for the prayer. I feel stripped. The act of reaching past everything I usually rely on has left me rawer than before, but I cannot regret it. If there is any power that listens, it has now heard the only request that matters to me.

Akira stirs.

The word comes out again, softer. Please.

I lift my head and cup his cheek with my free hand. "I’m right here. You’re not alone. I’ve got you."

His eyes open further this time. For a moment they seem to find me and hold. The glassy distance recedes by a fraction. His fingers tighten weakly around mine.

"Kael..."

"Yes." My voice chokes on the single syllable. "I’m here, baby. You’re safe. Just rest."

He studies my face as if trying to read something important through the remaining fog. I do not know what he sees. Was it the tear tracks, the fear, the love that has nowhere left to hide?

Whatever it is, it seems to ease him. The tension in his brow softens. His eyes close again, but the next stretch of sleep looks deeper, less haunted by the continuous plea.

I stay bent over him, one hand wrapped around his, the other still cradling the side of his face. The tears have slowed. The hollow ache behind them remains. I keep the prayer close, repeating the core of it without language whenever the fear spikes again. Let him stay. Let him stay. Let him stay.

Hours pass in that posture.

I monitor the slow climb of his mana reserves. I adjust the supports when he shifts. I wipe fresh sweat from his skin and replace the cloths. Every small improvement is noted and guarded like evidence that the night will not end the way the darker images insisted it might.

When the pain suppressant begins to thin I administer the next measured dose and watch his face for the moment the sharpest edge eases.

The love does not become gentler with time. It only grows more ferocious. I think of the mother’s blessing still warm in my possession. I think of the condo waiting. I think of the formal question I have not yet asked and the life I intend to build around his answer.

All of it feels both more precious and more precarious than it did yesterday. The attack has rewritten the timeline. Caution is still required, but delay has become its own form of risk.

Whoever hurt him will still answer for it. That resolve has not softened. But tonight the larger work is simpler and harder: keep him here. Keep the breathing steady. Keep the cold from settling too deep. Keep the word please from being the last thing he offers the dark.

When the first thin light of morning begins to press against the edges of the blackout screens, his hand tightens once more around mine. This time the pressure is stronger.

His eyes open and stay open this time. The glassiness has receded further. He looks at me, really looks, and the smallest, tired ghost of recognition and relief moves through his expression.

"You stayed," he whispers.

"Yes baby." I lean in and press my mouth to his forehead, lingering there. "I’m not going anywhere."

A faint sound leaves him that might be an attempt at a laugh or simply a release of held breath. His eyes close again, but the sleep that takes him now looks closer to true rest than the fractured drifting of the night.

I remain where I am, watching him, the tear tracks dry on my face, the prayer still sitting quietly under every other thought. The fear has not vanished. The helplessness has not fully released its grip. The love has only grown heavier and more absolute.

But he is still breathing. He is still here.

And for the first time in my life I have asked the heavens for something, and the morning has arrived with him still in it.

I will take that as the only answer I need for now.

I settle back into the chair without releasing his hand and begin the long, careful work of waiting for him to wake fully ready to meet whatever comes next with the same raw, unshielded certainty that kept me through the night.

He is mine to keep. And I will not lose him.

And not even the devil will change that.
