Role Stealer: The Script Executioner
Chapter 19: The Redaction War
The first Editor didn’t move with the grace of a warrior. He moved with the cold, calculated efficiency of a bureaucrat. He clicked his massive red pen, and a streak of crimson ink flew through the air, not as a projectile, but as a literal line of deletion. Where the ink touched the floor, the iron vanished, leaving behind the white grid of the void.
[Alert: Incoming Redaction! Avoid contact at all costs!]
"Leo, don’t let those lines touch you!" Kai shouted, diving to the side as a red stroke nearly took off his arm. "If they hit your glitch-side, you’ll be erased instantly!"
Leo didn’t need to be told twice. He slammed his fist into the ground, and a wave of orange data-spikes erupted, creating a temporary barrier between them and the Editors. "I can’t hold this for long, Kai! The orange energy is being ’edited’ as soon as it appears!"
Clara was already in motion. She raised her silver rod, her eyes glowing with a fierce, analytical light. "Silver Logic: Overwrite Command!"
A burst of silver binary code shot from her rod, clashing with the red ink. The two forces struggled in mid-air, the red trying to delete and the silver trying to rewrite. The air between them crackled with the sound of a million keyboards typing at once.
"Patch, where’s the main intake?" Kai asked, parrying a red strike from the lead Editor. The collision sent a shower of sparks that smelled like burning paper.
"Behind the central gear!" Patch shouted, her green eyes darting across the massive machinery. "The ink flows from a reservoir on the third floor, but the ’Logic Engine’ is right there! If you jam the gears with enough ’Foreign Data,’ the whole press will back up!"
"Foreign Data?" Leo asked, struggling to maintain his shield against a barrage of red ink. "Where are we going to get that?"
"We are the foreign data, Leo!" Kai roared.
He turned toward the lead Editor, his crimson blade Sunbringer vibrating with a lethal frequency. "Narrative Authority: Character Overlap!"
[Current Screen Time: 500 Hours -> 450 Hours.]
Kai didn’t just move; he blurred into three different versions of himself. One was the scout, one was the thief, and one was the glitch. The Editor’s red pen couldn’t track all three at once. The machine-like mind of the bureaucrat faltered, the red ink splashing harmlessly against the walls.
Kai’s three forms merged back into one right in front of the Editor. He didn’t use his sword. He grabbed the Editor’s wrist, the red shard in his palm glowing with a blinding light.
"Let’s see how you like being edited," Kai whispered.
[Command: Source Code Infusion.]
The red energy from the shard surged into the Editor’s arm. The man in the grey suit screamed as his body began to distort. His skin turned into pages of text, his eyes into punctuation marks. He wasn’t being deleted; he was being turned into a ’Footnote.’
"One down!" Kai shouted, tossing the crumpled, paper-like remains of the Editor aside.
The other Editors hesitated, their blank, white-screen eyes flickering with a rare emotion: hesitation. In their programmed reality, a character shouldn’t be able to touch an Editor, let alone rewrite them.
"The Press! Now!" Kai commanded.
They sprinted toward the massive central gear. It was a terrifying piece of machinery, a hundred feet tall, its teeth made of jagged obsidian that crushed rolls of parchment into finished reality. A thick, black liquid—the Primal Ink—flowed through glass pipes into the heart of the machine.
"Clara, Leo, give me everything you’ve got!" Kai shouted, standing before the main intake pipe. "We’re going to overload the system!"
Clara pointed her silver rod at the pipe, her face set in a grim mask of determination. "Silver Mana: Overflow!"
Leo slammed both hands against the iron base of the machine, his orange energy surging through the metal like a virus. "Glitch Core: Maximum Output!"
Kai raised Sunbringer, the crimson blade reaching its peak intensity. He didn’t attack the pipe. He attacked the ’Concept’ of the machine.
"Narrative Authority: Industrial Sabotage!"
[Current Screen Time: 450 Hours -> 350 Hours.]
The combined forces of silver, orange, and crimson energy slammed into the Logic Engine. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. The massive gears continued to turn, the ink continued to flow.
And then, the sound changed.
The rhythmic hum of the press turned into a high-pitched screech. The black ink in the pipes began to turn a chaotic, glowing orange. The obsidian gears groaned, their teeth chipping as the ’Foreign Data’ jammed the mechanism.
[Alert: Critical System Failure in Floor 2.]
[Warning: Narrative Flow is backing up!]
[Status: The Publisher has been alerted.]
"It’s working!" Patch shouted, her eyes wide with excitement. "The ink is flowing backward! The upper floors are losing their reality!"
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the chamber. The main intake pipe burst, showering everything in glowing, orange ink. The liquid was hot, pulsing with the energy of a thousand unwritten stories.
Kai stood in the middle of the ink-storm, his body absorbing the chaotic energy. He felt his Screen Time meter begin to spin.
[Screen Time Gained: +200 Hours (System Sabotage Bonus)]
[Current Screen Time: 550 Hours.]
The grey ceiling above them began to crack. A massive, golden elevator descended through the rubble, its doors opening to reveal a man who made the Apostles look like children.
He was dressed in a suit that looked like it was made of starlight, and his face was a shifting mosaic of every character ever written. He didn’t carry a pen or a sword. He carried a briefcase made of solid light.
[Entity: The Senior Editor - Level 80.]
[Objective: Asset Recovery.]
"You’ve caused a significant drop in our quarterly projections, Mr. Kai," the Senior Editor said, his voice sounding like a thousand legal documents being read at once. "The Publisher is... displeased. The cost of repairing this floor alone exceeds your entire narrative value."
"Then I guess I’m in the red," Kai said, his red-bladed sword pointed at the Senior Editor’s throat. "What’s the next step? A lawsuit?"
The Senior Editor offered a cold, professional smile. "No. A liquidation."
He opened his briefcase, and a wave of pure, white light erupted, far more intense than anything the Auditor or the Apostles had used. It wasn’t just erasing energy; it was ’Contractual Oblivion.’
"Leo! Clara! Get behind me!" Kai shouted.
But before the light could reach them, the orange ink on the floor began to rise. It formed a wall of chaotic, unwritten text that absorbed the Senior Editor’s light.
"What?" the Senior Editor gasped, his mosaic face flickering. "How can the ink resist the Contract?"
"Because it’s not your ink anymore," a voice whispered from the shadows.
Patch stepped forward, her green eyes glowing with a terrifying intensity. She wasn’t holding her crossbow-computer anymore. She was holding a small, black remote control with a single, red button.
"The Under-Script sends its regards," Patch said.
She pressed the button.
The floor beneath the Senior Editor vanished. Not into the void, but into a massive, digital trapdoor. The Level 80 entity fell, his briefcase flying open and spilling starlight everywhere, before the trapdoor slammed shut.
"Patch?" Leo asked, his voice shaking. "What was that?"
"A ’Delete Key’ we’ve been building for three volumes," Patch said, her voice trembling with adrenaline. "It only works once. And we just used it on a Senior Editor."
Kai looked at the golden elevator. It was still open. It was their ticket to the upper floors.
"The Publisher is waiting," Kai said, stepping into the elevator. "And I think he just realized that the ’Liquidation’ isn’t going to be as easy as he thought."
Leo, Clara, and Patch stepped in beside him. The doors closed, and the elevator began to ascend, passing through floors of light, shadow, and half-finished worlds.
[Current Floor: 99... 98... 97...]
"Act Three is reaching its climax," Kai whispered, his eyes fixed on the rising numbers. "Let’s see if the Publisher is ready for the final edit."
