Role Stealer: The Script Executioner
Chapter 58: The Fire That Made No Smoke
Kai stood in the middle of the street, staring at the house.
The flames covered every wall, but the rain passed through them without making a sound. No smoke rose from the roof. No heat reached the road. Even the broken lamp above the door continued to flicker beneath the fire.
His mother’s voice came from somewhere inside.
"Kai!"
He took one step forward.
Sarah caught his arm. "Wait."
"My mother is in there."
"I know. But the fire has no heat."
Kai turned toward her.
Sarah pointed at the house. "Look at the rain. It falls through the flames. That isn’t natural."
"Neither is anything that happened today."
He pulled his arm free and walked toward the door.
Kael moved in front of him, blocking the way. His broken shield hung from one hand, and blood ran down his knee from the fight with the Executioners.
"Kai, listen to her. The Company wants you angry."
"They already have that."
"They want you careless."
Kai looked at the burning house. Behind the front window, he could see his mother standing perfectly still. Her face was turned toward him, but her eyes did not move.
Elara stood behind her.
The girl’s mouth formed one word.
Run.
Kai froze.
The image flickered.
For half a second, the fire disappeared. The house stood untouched. His mother was not inside. Elara was not behind her. There was only an empty room and a silver mark painted across the floor.
Then the flames returned.
Kai’s injured side tightened. He pressed one hand against the wound and felt fresh blood soaking through his clothes.
"It’s a message," he said.
"What?" Jax asked.
"The house. The fire. They’re showing us what they want us to see."
A slow clap echoed through the street.
The Adjuster stood beneath a black umbrella at the far end of the road. His suit was torn from the previous fight, and one side of his face was bruised. He looked more human than before, which somehow made him more disturbing.
"You learned quickly," he said.
Kai stepped into the rain. "Where is my family?"
"Safe."
"Prove it."
The Adjuster lifted a small silver device. A clear image appeared above his palm. Kai’s mother sat in the kitchen, holding Elara’s hand. Both were alive. Both were frightened. A red circle glowed around Elara’s wrist.
Kai’s breath caught.
Sarah stared at the image. "That mark is binding magic."
"Correct," the Adjuster replied. "If I close my hand, the mark tightens. If I open the device, the mark disappears."
Kael raised his sword. "Then put the device down."
The Adjuster looked at him. "You are the captain, Kael. The loyal shield. The man who keeps standing even after his bones are broken. A respectable role."
Kael’s grip tightened around his sword.
"But you are not the one I came for," the Adjuster continued. "This is between Kai and the Company."
Kai walked closer. "You followed me into the Tower, attacked my friends, threatened my family, and now you want to call this personal?"
"No. I want to call it business."
"Then give me a price."
The Adjuster smiled. "Return to Floor Twelve. Enter the central Processing Plant. Destroy the second plant if you can. Then surrender yourself before the third."
Jax stared at him. "Why would he agree to that?"
"Because the moment Kai returns, I will release his family from the binding mark."
Sarah stepped forward. "And if he refuses?"
The Adjuster closed two fingers around the silver device.
Elara screamed in the image.
Kai’s shadow exploded across the street.
The rain stopped around him.
Black tendrils shot over the pavement and tore through the walls of the nearby buildings. The Adjuster raised his free hand, and a transparent barrier appeared between them. Kai’s shadows struck the barrier and burst apart like waves against stone.
"Kai!" Sarah shouted. "Don’t lose control!"
He heard her, but the anger was louder.
The Adjuster tightened his fingers again.
Elara screamed a second time.
Kai moved.
He crossed the street so quickly that the rain bent around his body. His fist struck the barrier. A sharp pain traveled from his knuckles to his shoulder, but the barrier cracked.
The Adjuster’s eyes widened.
Kai struck again.
The barrier split down the center.
The Adjuster threw the silver device into the air and drew a narrow black pistol from inside his coat. He fired once.
The bullet struck Kai in the stomach.
Kai stopped.
For one moment, he looked down at the small hole in his shirt. No blood came out. The bullet was not made of metal. It was a glowing red needle buried beneath his skin.
The Adjuster fired again.
Kael crossed the distance and caught the second shot on his sword. The bullet shattered, releasing a burst of red light that threw him into a wall.
"Kael!" Sarah ran toward him.
"I’m alive," he groaned. "Shoot him back."
"I’m a healer!"
"Then heal me harder!"
Jax vanished into the rain.
The Adjuster looked around. "Where did the scout go?"
A dagger struck his wrist.
The silver device fell from his hand.
Jax appeared behind him, caught the device, and rolled across the wet pavement. The image of Kai’s family vanished instantly.
The Adjuster turned with a roar that sounded nothing like his calm voice. He raised the pistol toward Jax.
Kai reached him first.
The red needle inside Kai’s stomach burned through his body, slowing him down, but he forced his legs to move. He grabbed the Adjuster’s gun and bent the barrel away just as it fired.
The shot tore through the air above Jax’s head.
Kai drove his forehead into the Adjuster’s face.
The man staggered.
Kai struck him in the ribs, then the throat, then the knee. Every blow was heavy, but none was clean. The red needle was spreading through his body, turning his muscles stiff and numb.
The Adjuster recovered and slammed his palm into Kai’s chest.
Kai flew backward and crashed through the wooden door of the burning house.
This time, he felt heat.
Real heat.
The flames around the room roared to life. Wooden beams fell from the ceiling. The fire rushed toward him like a living creature.
"Kai!" Sarah shouted from outside.
He rolled across the floor as a burning beam crushed the place where his head had been. His wound opened wider. Blood ran down his side.
The Adjuster stepped through the broken doorway.
"This is what happens when you resist," he said. "Your family is safe because I allow them to be safe."
Kai pushed himself up against the wall.
"Keep talking," he said.
The Adjuster pointed the ruined pistol at him. "You cannot defeat me in this condition."
"I’m not trying to defeat you."
Kai looked at the fire around them.
He noticed the flames moved toward the Adjuster but stopped a few inches from his shoes. He noticed the floorboards beneath the man were dry. He noticed the same silver mark from the false theater glowing underneath the dust.
The Adjuster’s protection was tied to the house.
Kai smiled despite the pain.
"You built another stage."
The Adjuster fired.
Kai dropped to the floor. The shot passed over him and struck the wall. At the same moment, Kai slammed his palm against the silver mark.
The room shook.
The flames changed direction.
They wrapped around the Adjuster’s legs.
He looked down in shock.
"What did you do?"
Kai forced himself to stand. "I stopped playing the part you wrote for me."
The Adjuster tried to move, but the flames climbed higher. He raised a barrier around his body. The fire struck it and began to spread across the surface.
Sarah, Kael, and Jax rushed into the house.
"Kai, get out!" Sarah shouted. "The roof is collapsing!"
"Take the device."
Jax held up the silver case. "It’s locked."
"Break it."
"I don’t know how."
"Then use your dagger."
Jax stabbed the case. Once. Twice. On the third strike, the silver shell split open.
A red thread snapped inside it.
Far away, someone screamed.
The image of Kai’s mother and sister appeared one last time, then vanished. The binding mark around Elara’s wrist disappeared.
The Adjuster’s barrier collapsed.
Kai stepped toward him.
The man fell to one knee, his suit burning at the edges.
"You think this changes anything?" he asked. "The Company has already marked your family. They will never be safe while you live."
Kai looked at him through the flames.
For a second, he wanted to kill him.
His hand even reached for the broken Executioner blade.
Then Sarah grabbed his wrist.
"Kai," she said quietly. "If you kill him here, we may never find out how to remove the mark completely."
Kai looked down at the blade.
The Adjuster laughed weakly. "She understands. You don’t need to be a monster to lose everything. You only need to make one emotional decision."
Kai’s fingers trembled.
He released the blade.
Instead, he kicked the Adjuster through the burning doorway and into the street. Kael dragged him away from the collapsing house while Sarah held back the flames with a wall of white light.
The Adjuster disappeared into the rain.
No body remained.
Only his voice echoed from the dark street.
"Return to the Tower, Kai. The second plant is waiting."
Kai stood in front of the burning house, breathing hard. The red needle still burned inside his stomach. His body felt weak enough to fall, but he remained standing.
Jax held up the broken silver case. "We saved your family."
Kai looked at him.
"No," he said. "We saved a message."
Kael frowned. "What do you mean?"
Kai turned toward the house.
The flames were beginning to fade. Beneath the ruined floor, a circle of silver light remained.
Sarah knelt beside it and brushed away the ash.
A symbol appeared beneath the floorboards: a hand holding a crown, surrounded by three empty circles.
Kai recognized it.
He had seen the same symbol carved into the walls beneath Floor Twelve.
"The Company didn’t just threaten my family," he said. "They used them to show me this."
Kael stared at the symbol. "What is it?"
Kai looked toward the dark sky.
"It’s the entrance to the second plant."
Behind them, the city lights flickered off one street at a time.
A voice spoke from the rooftops.
"Not the entrance," it said. "The grave."
A figure in a torn crimson robe stood above them, holding a broken weeping-eye mask in one hand.
The remaining Executioners had found them.
Kai lifted the broken blade.
His side was bleeding. His stomach burned. His hands were shaking.
Sarah stepped beside him.
Kael raised his sword.
Jax disappeared into the shadows.
Kai looked at the burning remains of his home one final time.
"I’ll come back," he whispered.
Then he faced the rooftop.
The figure dropped from above.
Kai met him in the rain.
