Role Stealer: The Script Executioner
Chapter 67: The Village That Remembered
The first villager attacked with a farming axe.
Kai raised his own weapon and blocked the strike. The impact ran through his arms and forced him backward. His body was whole after the return, but it was still weak. His ribs ached, his muscles felt heavy, and the memory of dying beneath the buried city remained sharper than any wound.
The villager attacked again.
Kai stepped aside and struck the man’s wrist with the wooden handle of the axe. The villager dropped his weapon, but his face did not change. He simply reached for Kai with both hands.
Mira stabbed him in the thigh.
The man fell.
"You killed him," Kai said.
"No." Mira pulled her knife free. "I stopped him."
The villager’s body began to shake. A red line appeared beneath his skin, running from his throat to his heart.
Kai grabbed Mira and pulled her away.
The villager exploded into red light.
The blast threw both of them into the side of a wooden house. Kai hit the wall first and felt the impact travel through his shoulder.
Mira landed beside him, coughing.
"That was not a person," Kai said.
"It used to be."
A dozen villagers moved through the smoke.
They carried knives, axes, hammers, and pieces of broken furniture. Their eyes were empty, but their movements were not random. They surrounded Kai and Mira from three directions, leaving only the road toward the hills open.
Kai stared at the gap.
"They want us to run."
Mira wiped blood from her mouth. "They always do."
"Always?"
"I told you. This village has happened before."
Kai looked at her sharply. "How many times?"
Mira’s eyes moved toward the stone building behind them.
"Enough to know that the road to the hills is not an escape."
The villagers charged.
Kai swung the axe in a wide arc. The weapon struck the first attacker across the chest and pushed him back. Another villager came from the side. Kai ducked beneath a hammer and drove his elbow into the man’s stomach.
The man did not react.
He wrapped both arms around Kai’s waist.
A red line flashed across his throat.
Kai’s eyes widened.
"Mira!"
She understood immediately. Her knife cut through the line.
The villager collapsed, unconscious.
Kai shoved him away and kicked another attacker into the mud. He did not kill them. He did not know if they could be saved, and he refused to turn the street into another slaughterhouse.
That hesitation cost him.
A woman struck him across the back with a metal shovel. Kai fell to one knee. The woman raised the shovel again.
Mira threw her knife.
The blade entered the woman’s shoulder. She stumbled, and Kai rolled away from the second strike.
"Stop trying to save them," Mira shouted.
"They are people."
"They are weapons."
"Those aren’t opposites."
Kai grabbed the woman’s arm and twisted the shovel from her hand. He struck the red line at her throat with the axe handle. The mark flickered, but it did not break.
The woman opened her mouth.
"Kai," she whispered.
He froze.
It was his mother’s voice.
The woman’s face changed. Her features became older, softer, and painfully familiar.
"Why did you leave me?"
Kai’s grip loosened.
The woman raised the shovel.
Mira shoved Kai aside. The shovel struck her shoulder instead.
Mira fell with a cry.
Kai’s anger returned all at once.
He drove the axe into the ground between them. The impact cracked the mud and sent a shock through the woman’s red mark. The line around her throat split apart.
She collapsed.
The remaining villagers stopped moving.
For one strange second, the entire village stood still.
Then every villager turned toward the stone registration hall.
The silver circle above the entrance began to glow.
A bell rang.
The villagers dropped their weapons and walked toward the building in perfect silence.
Kai helped Mira stand.
"What are they doing?"
"Returning to their places."
"Why?"
"Because the next part is beginning."
The door of the registration hall opened.
The man in the dark uniform stepped outside. His face was bruised from Kai’s earlier attack, but he wore the same calm smile.
"You have caused unnecessary damage," he said.
Kai kept the axe raised. "Where are my friends?"
"Which friends?"
"Kael. Sarah. Jax."
The man looked at Mira.
"Your companion has been asking about them too."
Mira stepped behind Kai.
The man continued, "They are waiting at the palace."
"What palace?" Kai asked.
"The one at the end of the road."
"You said my family was there."
"They are."
"And my friends?"
"They are there too."
Kai looked at Mira. "You said the road is not an escape."
"It isn’t."
The man smiled. "She remembers more than she should."
Mira raised her knife.
The man lifted one hand.
A red mark appeared around Mira’s wrist.
She dropped the knife and fell to the ground, clutching her arm.
Kai charged.
The man drew no weapon. He simply stepped forward and struck Kai in the chest with an open palm.
Kai flew backward and crashed into the side of a house. The air left his lungs.
The man walked toward him.
"You are not ready to fight me in this body."
Kai forced himself onto one knee.
"Then why keep giving me chances?"
"Because the Company wants to know what you become when you remember."
The man kicked Kai’s axe away.
Kai reached toward it, but the man stepped on his hand.
Pain shot through his fingers.
Mira tried to stand.
The red mark around her wrist tightened.
"Don’t," the man warned. "If you move, I will close the seal."
Kai looked at Mira’s face. She was pale, but she did not cry.
"How do I remove it?"
"You cannot."
"Everyone says that until I prove them wrong."
The man crouched in front of him.
"You have already died once in this cycle. Your return brought you here because the Tower could not place you back where you belonged."
Kai stared at him.
The man continued, "Do you know what happens when a person returns without a proper anchor?"
Kai said nothing.
"They become unstable."
The world around him flickered.
The wooden village became a stone corridor for half a second. The gray sky turned black. The registration hall stretched upward into a tower before returning to normal.
Kai felt a sharp pressure behind his eyes.
The man smiled.
"Your body is already forgetting which version of reality it belongs to."
Kai pushed against the man’s foot.
"Get off me."
"Still proud."
"Still standing."
The man pressed harder.
A red line appeared along Kai’s wrist.
The same line that had been around the villagers’ throats.
Kai stared at it.
The man was not marking him with a new seal.
He was connecting him to the village.
Kai looked at the registration hall. The silver circle above the door. The identical houses. The villagers returning to their places.
This was not merely a village.
It was a storage chamber for people who had been turned into repeatable roles.
Every villager was connected to the same place.
Every person who died here returned to it.
Kai had not escaped the city after his death.
He had been assigned a new role.
The replacement.
Kai looked at the man. "You reset this village every time someone dies."
The man’s smile faded slightly.
"You are learning."
"You kill them, erase the memory, and start again."
"Not erase. Arrange."
"And me?"
"You are the newest arrival."
"Why do I remember?"
The man leaned closer.
"Because the body remembers what the mind forgets."
Kai’s stomach tightened.
The man removed his foot from Kai’s hand and reached toward the red mark on his wrist.
Kai moved.
He grabbed a handful of mud and threw it into the man’s eyes.
The man stepped back in surprise.
Kai rolled toward the fallen axe and seized the handle. He swung low, striking the man’s ankle.
The blow connected.
The man stumbled.
Kai rose and struck again, this time aiming for the silver badge on his chest. The axe hit the badge and split it in half.
A wave of red light burst from the broken metal.
The man screamed.
The sound was not human. It shook the village, shattered the windows, and forced every villager to fall to their knees.
Mira crawled toward Kai.
"You broke his badge."
"What was it?"
"A key."
The registration hall doors slammed open.
Behind them, the corridor was gone. A black staircase descended beneath the building, surrounded by red light.
The man staggered backward, clutching his chest.
"You should not have done that."
Kai kept the axe raised.
"People keep saying that too."
The man looked toward the staircase.
Something moved below.
A heavy chain dragged across stone.
Then a voice echoed from the darkness.
"Kai."
Kai froze.
It was his own voice.
The same voice that had spoken through the faceless figure before his death.
Mira grabbed his sleeve. "Don’t go down there."
Kai looked at the staircase.
His body felt weak. His hand was bleeding. The red mark on his wrist was spreading toward his elbow.
But beneath the pain, he felt something else.
Recognition.
He had stood at the bottom of those stairs before.
Not in this life.
Not in this body.
The man in the uniform lunged toward him.
Kai turned too late.
A silver blade entered beneath his ribs.
He felt the cold metal pass through his body.
Mira screamed.
The man leaned close to Kai’s ear.
"Your second death will take you closer."
Kai grabbed the man’s sleeve.
"You’re coming with me."
He pulled them both toward the staircase.
The man tried to break free, but Kai held on with everything he had. They fell together into the darkness.
The last thing Kai saw was Mira reaching for his hand.
Then the blade twisted.
His heart stopped.
Darkness swallowed him again.
Somewhere far above, the village bell began to ring.
One time.
Two times.
Three.
When Kai opened his eyes, he was lying on the floor of the registration hall.
The blue lamps were burning.
The man in the uniform stood beside the table with an unbroken silver badge on his chest.
Mira was nowhere to be seen.
The man looked down at him.
"You’re awake."
Kai touched his side.
There was no wound.
But his fingers were shaking.
The man smiled.
"Welcome to your second attempt."
