Root of Dominion

Chapter 77: Syndicates’ Shadowed Gambit

  • Next Chapter

The warehouse district reeked of rust and rotting kelp, its labyrinth of cranes and derelict silos casting long shadows under the perpetual overcast sky. Thornewood's roots had burrowed deep into the cracked concrete, veins of green pulsing with stolen essence from the harbor's depths. Slaves hauled crates of pearl-infused ore toward the central forge, their backs bent under the weight, collars humming warnings at any sign of slack. One lagged, a former scavenger with salt-crusted beard, his steps faltering from a fresh lash mark across his shoulders. An overseer— a wiry woman with thorn tattoos—grabbed his chain, yanking him forward. 'Move, salt-dog, or the roots drink you dry.' She drove her boot into his knee, the crack echoing as he crumpled, gasping. Vines slithered from the ground, coiling around his throat, thorns drawing beads of blood until he scrambled up, hauling double.

Liam stood atop a makeshift platform, overlooking the operation. The pearls from yesterday's dive gleamed in Lena's constructs, embedded in generator cores that now thrummed with abyssal power. Rift shields flickered to life around key structures, blue voids repelling probing drones from distant factions. His gaze shifted inland, where fog clung to the flooded streets leading to the city's core. Maps on Cassia's tablet highlighted syndicate outposts—nests of smugglers and rift-warped enforcers hoarding pre-collapse tech. 'They'll come for the pearls,' Cassia murmured, her fingers tracing routes. 'Our haul disrupted their black market. Expect raids by dusk.'

Hannah grunted agreement, sharpening her hammer's edge on a whetstone. Her muscles rippled under scarred skin, sweat beading on her cleavage as she worked. 'Let 'em. I'll crush their skulls like those kraken beaks.' Simone leaned against a crate nearby, her lithe form coiled like a spring, bracers whispering faint gusts that cooled the humid air. 'Scouts report movement—armored skiffs cutting through the canals. Armed with railguns salvaged from old wrecks.' Elaine knelt at Liam's feet, her priestess robes hiked to expose thighs marked with ritual scars, murmuring prayers to his 'divine will.' Her diadem glowed softly, channeling light to mend a slave's infected wound nearby—the man whimpered as flesh knit, but his eyes held terror, knowing such mercy was fleeting.

The assault hit as the sun dipped low, painting the water blood-red. Skiffs sliced through the mist, hulls reinforced with scrap metal, engines growling like starved beasts. Gunfire erupted first—tracers stitching across the docks, shattering lanterns and splintering wood. A slave caught a round in the gut, doubling over as intestines spilled in steaming loops. He clawed at the deck, screaming until roots silenced him, vines piercing his chest to absorb the fading life force. Overseers returned fire, bolt-action rifles barking, dropping two attackers into the drink where they thrashed, blood trailing like ink.

Liam void-stepped to the forefront, space folding in a ripple that placed him atop the lead skiff. The pilot—a hulking brute with cybernetic arm—swung a chain whip, links whistling. Liam caught it mid-air with root tendrils, yanking the man forward into a light-infused punch. Fist connected with jaw, bone shattering in a spray of teeth and blood. The skiff veered, crashing into pilings with a screech of tearing metal. Raiders spilled out, firing wildly—bullets pinged off bramble walls that Simone summoned, thorns impaling a shooter's leg, pinning him as he howled, femoral artery gushing.

Hannah charged the second vessel, leaping aboard with hammer raised. She swung low, caving in a raider's knee, the joint exploding in red mist. He toppled, and she followed with an overhead smash, helm crumpling like foil, brains pulping against the deck. Another lunged with a vibro-knife, slashing at her arm—blood welled, but she laughed, grabbing his wrist and twisting until it snapped. She drove the blade into his eye socket, twisting deep as he convulsed, foam bubbling from his lips.

From the warehouse roof, Simone loosed arrows, wind propelling them into throats and chests. One struck a gunner mid-reload, shaft burying to the fletching, his body jerking as he toppled overboard. Elaine channeled from afar, light beams lancing out to sear flesh— a raider's face melted in the glow, skin sloughing off in charred strips, exposing grinning skull before he plunged into the canal.

Mira and her divers, now loosely allied under collar's threat, fought from the flanks. She directed currents to capsize a skiff, men spilling into the water where kraken remnants—tethered by abyssal anchors—dragged them under. Screams cut short as tentacles wrapped waists, crushing ribs with wet snaps, bodies vanishing into froth. One diver speared a swimmer, blade punching through back and out the sternum, twisting to widen the wound before shoving the corpse aside.

Liam pressed the assault, roots erupting from the docks to ensnare the syndicate leader—a sly woman named Vex, her body augmented with neural implants flickering blue. She dodged a void step, firing a pulse pistol that grazed his shoulder, searing flesh. Pain flared, but he countered with light explosion, the blast engulfing her guards in blinding fire. Skin blistered and popped, men clawing at eyes as they burned alive, acrid smoke rising. Vex lunged, implant-enhanced claws raking his chest—shallow cuts, but drawing blood that roots immediately stanched.

He grappled her, slamming her against the skiff's console. 'Your routes—spill them, or I feed you to the depths.' The collar prototype Lena had fitted hummed, forcing truth. 'Inland canals to the Spire—tech vaults guarded by drones. Pearls trade for fusion cells.' Her eyes blazed hate, but words flowed. Roots bound her arms, thorns pricking veins to draw essence, weakening her struggles.

The raid broke as quickly as it came. Surviving raiders fled into the fog, skiffs limping away under sporadic arrow fire. Bodies littered the docks—twenty syndicate dead, their gear looted: railguns, implants, maps etched on data-slates. Slaves dragged corpses to the roots, which consumed them greedily, vines pulsing as they digested bone and sinew. One overseer claimed a fallen raider's pistol, testing it by executing a captured thug—bullet through the temple, brains splattering the wall.

Night fell heavy, the district secured but tense. Cassia integrated the new maps, plotting a push toward the Spire. Lena fused pearls into weapons, harpoons now void-tipped, capable of piercing armored hulls. World Authority ticked to 21%, the absorbed essences granting a new passive: Tidal Dominion (Rare - Nature/Void): +30% control over water domains, essence drain from submerged foes.

In the command tent, Liam bound Vex to a post, her body stripped to undergarments, implants dimmed by root suppressants. Mira watched from the corner, her own collar a constant itch, as Liam interrogated further. 'Allies in the core—who?' Vex spat blood, but answered: 'Jax's remnants, holed up with Kael's tech. They eye your harbor.' Hannah entered, wiping gore from her hammer, her gaze lingering on Vex's form. 'Break her slow, or fast?' Liam's hand trailed Vex's collarbone, roots teasing skin. 'Slow. Loyalty first.'

Elaine approached, offering a chalice of essence-laced wine, her robes parting to reveal heavy breasts marked with his sigil. 'Divine one, let me reinforce her binding.' She knelt, lips brushing his thigh in devotion, as the tent filled with the moans of exhausted slaves outside—some coupling in the shadows, bodies grinding for fleeting comfort amid the chains.

Dawn broke with patrols extended, roots mapping the canals. The Spire loomed in visions— a fractured tower of glass and steel, pulsing with forbidden power. Thornewood's corruption spread, but syndicates whispered of greater alliances forming in the ruins. Liam felt the pull, his empire's roots delving deeper into Earth's broken heart.
