Ruined By The Wrong Brother
Chapter 167 - 0167: A Manipulative Bastard Like You
Chapter 167: Chapter 0167: A Manipulative Bastard Like You
Elena’s Point Of View
The room was silent... so silent that I could hear the pulse of my own blood thumping in my ears, the shallow, uneven breaths of the three vultures surrounding me, and the heavy, rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the corner like a countdown to something final. Even the air itself seemed to hold its breath, waiting to see who would break first.
Graham’s face was deathly pale. The sharp line of his jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched frantically beneath his skin, his dark eyes wild with a chaotic storm of ugly emotions... panic, pride, and the sudden, terrifying realization that the woman he’d systematically stripped down for six years was no longer his to command.
He was only just seeing it now: he had lost me a long time ago, but he had been too arrogant to notice until the exit door slammed in his face. I almost pitied him. Almost.
"What do you mean by that?" His voice cut through the stillness, sharp and demanding, bristling with that false, aristocratic authority he thought he owned by birthright. He took a heavy step toward me, his hand reaching out like he had any right to touch me, any right to demand answers from me. "Elena, explain yourself. What the hell do you mean, you regret not doing this sooner?"
I turned to him fully, taking my time. I squared my shoulders, smoothed down the hem of the oversized cotton shirt that didn’t belong to him, and lifted my chin. I raised my right hand, palm flat, cutting the distance between us and silencing him mid-stride. For three years, I had shrunk myself smaller and smaller in his presence. Not anymore.
"I’m not done talking," I said, my voice dropping into a register so cold and steady it froze him where he stood.
Beside him, Matilda’s chest heaved. Her hands, weighed down by heavy gold rings, twitched violently at her sides. She opened her mouth, her eyes darting between me and the ring lying abandoned on the floorboards, no doubt gathering her breath to interrupt, to defend her precious, golden-child son, to twist my reality into another one of her convenient lies.
I could practically see the excuses assembling themselves behind her eyes, ready to be deployed like weapons she’d used a hundred times before.
I didn’t let her speak. I flicked my gaze toward her... a single, sharp glance laced with pure, unadulterated contempt. I didn’t say a word, but the sheer freezing fury in my eyes made her snap her lips shut with an audible click.
Good. She knew. Deep beneath her diamond necklace and high-society posture, she knew she had no moral high ground to stand on. Not after the years she had spent enabling her son’s cruelty, feeding his ego, validating his neglect, and welcoming his pregnant mistress into our home like some twisted, modern family tradition.
I had watched her do it with a smile on her face, and some small, foolish part of me had still hoped she might one day defend me instead.
I took a slow, deliberate step closer to Graham, closing the physical gap until I could smell the faint scent of expensive cologne clinging to his collar... the same cologne I used to buy him every anniversary, wrapped with care, chosen because I’d once believed small gestures could hold a marriage together.
My voice was low, controlled, but raw with the agonizing history of three years of quiet torture, of swallowed tears, of a deep, naive love that had rotted into ash.
"You know..." I began, my voice cracking slightly on the first word before I clamped down on it, hardening my core, my fingers curling into tight fists at my sides. "People have been asking me things, Graham. Friends, my art gallery partners... even the servants who watched you walk out of this house every Friday night while I sat alone in the dark, pretending I didn’t hear the door."
A harsh, bitter laugh escaped me, sounding like broken glass rattling in my chest. "They’ve been asking me for months: since I’m being treated this badly..." I stepped closer, my eyes locked onto his pale face. "Treated like absolute garbage in my own marriage... sidelined, humiliated, made to feel like a ghost in my own home..."
I took another step. Graham unconsciously shifted his weight back, his eyes widening, and for the first time in years, I saw something close to fear flicker across his features.
"Treated with zero respect for my feelings, for my dignity, for my loyalty..." My voice broke for a split second, a wave of old, buried grief threatening to breach the surface, but I swallowed it down, forcing the burn in my eyes to turn back into fire. "Hurt, day after day, by my own husband..." The word husband felt like lead, heavy and toxic, sliding off my tongue. "They kept asking me: Elena, why haven’t you left?"
The room stayed completely still. Behind Graham, I heard Lilian shift uncomfortably on her high heels, her breath hitching in her throat. She pressed her back against the arm of the sofa, her hand still cradling her cheek where my palm had landed, her smug confidence completely dismantled. She knew this wasn’t about her anymore.
She was just the cheap symptom; Graham was the disease. This was between me and him... between the woman he had broken and the man who had promised before God and two hundred guests to honor her.
"Why am I still putting up with you?" I whispered, every word sharp enough to slice skin. "Why was I letting you, your mother..." I cut my eyes over to Lilian, my lips curling in disgust before snapping back to Graham, "...and your little side project step all over me? Why didn’t I just pack my bags and walk away the first time you stayed out until dawn?"
Graham’s face twisted, his hands rising slightly in a desperate, defensive posture. "Elena, stop framing it like that! You know how complicated things were..."
"It’s not that simple!" I snapped, my voice cracking as it rose, echoing off the high-vaulted ceiling and rattling the glass in the display cabinets. "To leave a manipulative bastard like you!"
My hands trembled violently, my nails digging so deep into my palms that I felt the sharp sting of breaking skin. The pain grounded me, kept me from dissolving into the kind of tears he would have used against me.
"All those years I loved you..." I choked out, a raw, painful laugh tearing from my throat, shattering the tense silence into a thousand pieces. "God help me, I actually loved you. I kept thinking... I kept foolishly believing that if I just endured a little more, if I was just quieter, if I worked harder, if I got through the stress, we could fix it! I kept waiting for the man I married to come back!"
I shook my head, staring at him as if seeing his true face for the very first time. The illusion was gone. The handsome, powerful heir was just a hollow, small man hiding behind his father’s money, and I wondered how I had ever mistaken his arrogance for strength.
"But now?" My voice dropped into a register of deadly, chilling calm. "I know there’s absolutely nothing to fix."
Matilda took a sudden, aggressive step forward, her pearl necklace bouncing against her silk blouse. "Now listen here, young lady! You came from nothing! My son gave you..."
"Shut up, Matilda!" I didn’t even look at her. My gaze remained nailed to Graham’s eyes, watching the color drain from his lips. "Because there was never anything between us to fix. Not love. Not respect. Not a single thread of real honesty."
I took a deep, ragged breath, my chest heaving against the coarse cotton of the shirt. "There was nothing."
The air in the grand foyer was suffocating, thick with the heavy stench of old lies, ruined pride, and the rotting remains of a marriage built on a foundation of control. Graham stood there, trying desperately to pull his scattered composure back together.
He adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket with trembling fingers, forcing a smooth, patronizing look onto his face... the same face he used when negotiating with difficult shareholders, the same face that used to make my stomach twist with something like admiration, back when I still mistook control for confidence.
"Elena," he said, his tone turning dangerously soft, calculated, and soothing, as if he were trying to talk a frightened animal off a ledge. He took a slow step toward me, spreading his hands in a gesture of total fake surrender. "Look at us. We are making a spectacle of ourselves in front of the staff and the family. We don’t need to do this here. We’ll sort this out. Just tell me what you want, and I’ll get it done. You want a bigger budget for your studio? Done. You want to take that trip to Paris you kept bringing up? Book the flight today."
He stepped even closer, his eyes locking onto mine with a sickening, desperate warmth, his voice dripping with condescending affection.
"Just stop causing a fuss about this," he murmured, taking another step. "I know what this is really about. I know you just want my attention. You’re hurt, you feel neglected, and you’re acting out to get a reaction from me. Fine. I’m here now. I’m ready to give you my attention, Elena. Just calm down and let’s go upstairs."
I stared at him for three seconds in complete disbelief. And then, I laughed.
It was a cold, loud, bitter sound that scraped its way up from the bottom of my lungs, ringing out through the cold marble house. I doubled over slightly, my shoulders shaking as the sheer absurdity of his ego hit me like a physical blow.
"Oh, here we go," I wheezed, straightening up and wiping a stray tear from my eye, my gaze raking over his immaculate suit like he was a pathetic clown in an expensive circus. "The manipulative cards again! Right on schedule! ’You’re just hysterical, Elena. You’re just desperate for my attention, Elena.’"
I took a step toward him, my laugh vanishing in an instant, replaced by an expression of raw, lethal hatred.
"You’ll never change, Graham. That’s the core of the problem, isn’t it? You genuinely believe every woman in the world is dying for a crumb of your time. You can’t even comprehend a reality where a woman looks at you and feels nothing but utter disgust."
Graham’s mask slipped. His brow furrowed in ugly, defensive rage, his chest heaving as he abandoned his soft approach. "I gave you five years, Elena! Three years to build a family with me! I wanted an heir! My family needed an heir, and you couldn’t give me that! What was I supposed to do? Let the Sinclair line die out because of your useless..."
"Good!" I barked out, stepping right into his personal space, my eyes burning into his like lit fuses. "Then it’s both sides! If you want to talk about failure, let’s talk about it!"
My voice was pure ice, sharp enough to sever bone. "You want to talk about what I couldn’t give you? Let’s talk about what you couldn’t give me! You couldn’t give me loyalty. You couldn’t give me protection. You couldn’t even give me a basic sense of safety in my own home!"
I smiled... a slow, terrifying, razor-thin smile - and turned my head toward Lilian. She was cowering behind the arm of the sofa, her arms wrapped tight around her midsection, her eyes fixed on me in absolute terror.
Lilian saw me looking and tried, with every ounce of remaining nerve she had, to pull her smug armor back on. She pushed herself upright, clutching her belly with both hands, forcing a sickeningly sweet, malicious purr into her voice.
"I gave him what you couldn’t," she said, her voice trembling slightly despite her attempt to sound triumphant. Her eyes gleamed with desperate malice as she looked down at her stomach, then back at me. "I gave him a son. I gave him the Sinclair bloodline. You were just an empty vessel wasting his time. You should be grateful I stepped in and took the burden off your shoulders!"
Graham’s head whipped around toward her, his face turning dark red, his voice booming like thunder through the foyer. "Lilian, shut the fuck up!"
"No, Graham, let her talk!" I shouted, turning on Lilian with the speed of a striking viper.
I took two fast, aggressive strides toward her. Lilian gasped, flinching back so hard her head nearly hit the wooden paneling behind the couch.
"Grateful?" My laugh was hollow, mocking, echoing in her face. My eyes raked up and down her shivering frame... taking in her lifting false eyelashes, her overfilled, bleeding lips, her expensive designer dress bought with my husband’s credit card. "Grateful for what, Lilian? For you sneaking around in cheap hotel rooms like a rat in the dark?"
I leaned down until my face was inches from hers, my voice dropping into a lethal, venomous hiss.
"Grateful for you sleeping with a married man who didn’t even have the balls to divorce his wife first? For carrying the child of a man who lies to you every single day about your status in his life?" I stepped closer, my shadow completely swallowing her. "You’re nothing but a desperate, gold-digging whore who settled for the scrapings off my dinner plate!"
My lips curled in utter revulsion as I looked at her shaking hands.
"You threw away your youth, your dignity, and your entire reputation to sit in my living room, wearing a dress bought with my household allowance, holding a baby that will grow up knowing its father had to be blackmailed into keeping you around! And you stand there with your fake face and tell me I should be grateful?!"
Lilian’s face went dead white. She choked on a breath, a high-pitched, pathetic sob tearing from her throat as tears ruined her foundation. She squeezed her eyes shut, pulling her knees up on the sofa, completely crushed.
I didn’t care. I didn’t care if she cried blood.
I turned back to Graham, who was staring at me as if I had morphed into a monster right before his eyes. I walked back toward him, my steps slow, heavy, and purposeful.
"You wanted an open marriage, darling?" My voice turned soft, sickly sweet, dripping with terrifying irony. "You wanted to live like a bachelor while keeping me locked up in this gilded cage as your respectable little trophy wife?"
I stopped right in front of him, reaching out with one finger to tap hard against his chest, right over his beating heart.
"I’ll open doors for you, Graham. Doors you can’t even begin to dream of..." My voice dropped into a dark, promising whisper, my eyes burning straight into his weak, cowardly soul. "I’m going to tear down every single piece of this fake, perfect life you built. I’m going to take my name, my art, my dignity, and every bit of evidence I have of your financial and marital infidelity, and I’m going to lay it out for the whole city to see."
I took a step back, sweeping my arm wide to encompass the marble foyer, the chandeliers, and his weeping mistress.
"And when I’m done?" I smiled... a cold, unforgiving promise. "You’ll wish you had never let me walk through that front door."
A harsh, mocking laugh suddenly shattered the tension.
It was Matilda.
She stepped forward, her expensive heels clicking against the floor as she began to clap her hands slowly, deliberately. Clap. Clap. Clap. Her face twisted into an ugly, patronizing sneer, her sharp eyes gleaming with ancient, cold malice. She thought she had found the weapon that would finally bring me to my knees.
"Bravo! What a performance! Absolutely magnificent, Elena!" Matilda sneered, stopping right beside Graham, placing a heavy, claw-like hand on her son’s shoulder. "So... the quiet little mouse has grown bold enough to talk to me like that, has she? You think you can stand in my house and threaten my son?"
She tilted her head, her lips curling into a cruel, triumphant smirk that made my stomach turn.
"Do you really think you have any power here, girl?" Matilda asked, her voice dropping into a low, calculating purr that vibrated with pure venom. "Do you have any idea how much money my son... how much this family... has spent keeping your pathetic, broke family afloat over the last six years?"
She stepped closer to me, her eyes burning with ruthless authority.
"Your worthless brother would have been six feet under in a public morgue if not for my son paying his medical bills!" she hissed, pointing a diamond-encrusted finger straight at my face. "Your father’s house would have been liquidated, sold off piece by piece to pay off his debts, if Graham hadn’t signed those bail-out checks! You exist in high society because we allowed you to exist!"
Matilda took another step, her voice rising into a shrill, outraged screech that vibrated through the room.
"And you want to leave him?!" She barked out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "You think you can just drop your ring on the floor, slap the mother of his child, disrespect his mother, and walk out of here like you’re some independent woman?! Without us, you are a nobody with a bankrupt family and a brother on life support! How dare you?!"
