Ruined By The Wrong Brother
Chapter 171 - 0171: Goodbye
Chapter 171: Chapter 0171: Goodbye
Elena’s Point Of View
It happened on our three-year anniversary. We were still in college, but it was a mid-semester holiday, and Graham had planned a surprise getaway to celebrate us. He had booked flights and taken us out of the country to an exquisite, private oceanfront resort.
The memory materialized vividly: the warm tropical ocean breeze blowing through the sheer curtains, the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore outside, and the soft, ambient glow of golden lamps inside our private suite. I remember thinking, as I unpacked my suitcase that first afternoon, that I had never felt so certain of anything as I felt certain of him.
It was late evening. We had just returned from a candlelight dinner on the beach, and Graham had stepped out down the hall to fetch extra ice and settle a quick question with the front desk. I took the opportunity to prepare for the night, slipping off my evening dress, my fingers trembling slightly with nerves I hadn’t expected to feel after three years together.
I was standing near the foot of the large king-sized bed, completely naked, just reaching over to pick up a silk robe resting on the edge of the duvet, when the heavy room door unlocked and swung open.
"El, the front desk said they’re bringing up the champagne in..." Graham said, walking into the room before his sentence cut off mid-air.
He froze dead in his tracks. His eyes widened, his breath catching loudly in his throat as his gaze swept over my bare shoulders, the curve of my waist, my hips, and my long legs illuminated by the warm light of the bedside lamps.
A dark, intensely hot flame ignited in his amber eyes, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. But almost instantly, his gentlemanly instinct kicked in. His cheeks flushed a dark, fiery red, and he quickly turned his entire body away toward the wall, shielding his eyes with his palm as he took a frantic step backward toward the hallway.
"I’m so sorry, princess!" he stammered out, his voice noticeably rougher, strained with absolute panic and restraint. "I... I didn’t mean to barge in on you! I thought you were in the bathroom changing... I’m so sorry, I’ll step outside..."
"Graham," I called out softly, my heart pounding in my throat.
He paused, his hand gripping the door handle, his back still partially turned, his jaw clenched tight as he fought to keep his eyes away. "I’m not looking, I swear. Take your time, El, I’ll just wait in the hall..."
"Look at me, Graham," I whispered, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
I walked across the soft rug toward him, completely bare, all my shyness melting away into the absolute certainty of how much I loved him, how much I trusted him with my entire soul. I stopped right in front of him.
Graham slowly lowered his hand, his amber eyes turning to meet mine. His chest was heaving, his gaze dark, heavy, and full of a raw, reverent desire that made my breath hitch.
I reached out, taking his large, warm hand in mine. Slowly, deliberately, I guided his palm to my bare waist, pressing his heat flush against my skin.
"Look at me," I repeated gently, searching his eyes. "I am ready, Graham. I’ve been ready. I want it to be you."
Graham let out a low, ragged growl from deep in his chest. Every ounce of his control shattered into pieces.
He yanked me flush against his body, his large hand wrapping around my waist to press me against his heat while his other hand entangled into my hair. He brought his lips crashing down onto mine in a deep, consuming, breathtaking kiss.
"God, Elena..." he rasped against my mouth, his lips parting mine with a fierce, possessive tenderness that sent liquid fire burning through my veins.
"Hmm... baby..." I moaned softly against his lips, my arms wrapping tightly around his broad neck, my fingers digging into his hair as the feeling of his warm body pressing against mine overwhelmed every single one of my senses.
He didn’t break the kiss for a second. He lifted me seamlessly into his arms, my legs wrapping around his waist as he carried me to the bed, gently laying me down onto the crisp white sheets. He hovered above me, his chest rising and falling, his eyes drinking in every single inch of my body as if I were something sacred.
"You are so breathtakingly beautiful, El," he whispered, his voice trembling with a reverence that made tears gather at the corners of my eyes.
He leaned down, pressing hot, lingering kisses along my jaw, down the sensitive length of my neck, and across my shoulders, making me arch my back into his touch with a soft gasp. His large hands stroked down my sides, tracing every curve, worshipping me with an agonizingly sweet, patient care until I was completely breathless, clinging to his shoulders, mindlessly whispering his name over and over.
And when he finally joined our bodies together, making us one under the soft tropical air, it was tender, profound, and overwhelmingly emotional. He held my hands tightly, our fingers intertwined on the pillows, looking straight into my eyes as he moved with a slow, agonizingly sweet devotion, whispering promises of forever with every single breath he took.
In that room, miles away from home, Graham took my innocence, and in return, I handed him my entire heart, my entire body, my entire soul. Every sacred part of who I was, I had handed over to him with open, trusting palms.
And now... it was all coming to an end.
I pulled my knees tighter to my chest, letting out a choked, ragged sob into my palms. The sound echoed painfully against the quiet walls of the guest room.
Ten years of devotion, completely erased by another woman’s baby bump. Ten years I would never get back, poured into a man who had apparently been counting down the days until something better came along.
I thought of all the birthdays, the holidays, the quiet Tuesday nights when I had chosen him over every other version of my life I might have lived, and the thought made my stomach twist with a fresh, nauseating grief.
The room lay bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun, the dust particles dancing in the light like ghosts of the woman I’d been... the one who’d loved him, who’d trusted him, who’d believed in the fairytale he’d sold me. I hardly recognized her anymore, that hopeful girl who had once nodded frantically at a boy holding two cups of coffee. She felt like a stranger now, someone I mourned as fiercely as I mourned the marriage itself.
I wiped my face with the back of my hand, my breath hitching as I stood, my spine straightening, my jaw clenching with determination. The suitcases sat stacked in the closet, waiting... empty, hungry, ready to swallow the last remnants of the life I’d built here.
I pulled the first one out, the zipper screaming as I yanked it open, my fingers digging into the fabric like it was his skin. The clothes... my clothes, the ones I’d bought with my own money, the ones I’d chosen because they felt like me, lay neatly folded, waiting. I grabbed them, shoving them into the suitcase with force, each piece a rebellion, a declaration of freedom.
The scent of lavender and bergamot... my scent, the one he’d hated because it wasn’t expensive enough, rose from the fabric, filling the room, choking me with memories I hadn’t asked for and no longer wanted.
"You’re my wife, and I should be getting you things."
His voice echoed in my mind, taunting me. I remembered the arguments... his frustration, my stubbornness, the way he’d pout like a child when I refused his credit cards, his gifts, his attempts to buy my love. "I know," I’d say, soft, pleading, my arms wrapping around his neck, my lips pressing against his. "But I love getting them myself." His sigh, exasperated, indulgent, followed always by the same quiet surrender.
"Just keep on loving me," I’d whisper. "That’s more than enough."
What a cruel joke that promise had become.
I laughed... short, bitter, the sound shattering the silence like glass. My fingers paused over a silk blouse, emerald green, the color of his eyes, the color of the dress I’d worn on our first date. I yanked it from the hanger, shoving it into the suitcase with force, my breath coming in sharp, ragged gasps.
The fabric tore slightly, the sound like a gunshot in the quiet room, but I didn’t care. Let it tear. Let it break. Let it die, just like everything else between us.
The drawers screeched as I pulled them open, my hands grabbing underwear, bras, the delicate lace reminding me of the nights I’d spent trying to please him, trying to be enough. I shoved them into the suitcase, my movements jerky, angry, each piece a reminder of how small he had made me feel over the years without my even noticing.
The perfume bottles clinked as I grabbed them, the glass cold against my skin, the scents mixing into a nauseating cocktail of memories... his cologne on my pillow, his hands on my skin, his lies in my ear.
I slammed the drawer shut, the sound echoing like a gunshot, my heart pounding in my chest like it wanted to escape. The mirror above the dresser caught my reflection... pale, wild-eyed, broken, but alive. Alive in a way I hadn’t been in years. I stared at myself, my fingers pressing against the glass, my voice a whisper. "I’m not gonna miss you."
The last drawer held the letters... stupid, naive letters I’d written him in the early days, when I’d believed in forever. My fingers hovered over them, trembling, before I scooped them up, shoving them into the trash without reading them. Burn them all. Let them turn to ash along with everything else I’d once called love.
The zipper screamed as I closed the suitcase, the sound final, irrevocable. I stood, my chest heaving, my hands clutching the handle like it was a lifeline. Surrounding me now was nothing but the quiet coldness of a room stripped of my presence, taking with it every memory, every sacrifice, and every tear I had ever bled for him. The room was empty now, stripped of me, of my presence, of the illusion that this had ever been a home.
I looked around one last time, my gaze lingering on the bed where I had cried myself to sleep more nights than I could count, where I had begged him to love me, where I had finally realized I was nothing but a convenience to him, a placeholder until someone more suitable arrived.
A small, broken part of me still wished he would burst through the door and beg me to stay, but I knew better now than to wait for a rescue that would never come.
"Goodbye," I whispered, my voice breaking, my fingers tightening around the handle of the suitcase.
And then, I walked out of the guest room, the door clicking shut behind me like the end of a Chapter... no, the end of a book, one I never wanted to read again.
