Chapter 299: Chapter 0299: I Didn’t Learn

Elena’s Point Of View

My voice dropped to a whisper on the last sentence, all the fight draining out of me, leaving only exhaustion and grief. The words felt final, like a door slamming shut on the best thing that had happened to me in years, but I couldn’t see any other way forward.

Every possibility I’d once imagined for us dissolved in that instant, replaced by the cold certainty that I’d been a fool to hope at all. I turned to retreat, to put the vast expanse of my mahogany desk between us, needing physical distance to match the emotional chasm that had opened up. My hands trembled as I reached for that distance, desperate for a barrier, anything solid to hide behind.

But I wasn’t fast enough. Jaxx lunged, his movements a blur of terrifyingly precise speed. Before I could even gasp, his large hands clamped around my wrists. I struggled, trying to yank myself away from the heat of him, but he was a wall of muscle, immovable and overwhelming.

Panic and something far more dangerous warred inside me, tangled together until I could no longer tell which one was winning.

With a swift, fluid motion, he spun me around, binding both of my wrists behind my back in a single, crushing grip. The position left me vulnerable, exposed, my body pressed against his in a way that made my pulse race for reasons I didn’t want to examine.

I should have been afraid, should have been screaming for security, but instead, my body responded with a traitorous surge of heat. I was trapped against his chest, the scent of his cologne mixing with the salt of my tears. His heart hammered against my shoulder blade, matching the frantic rhythm of my own.

The solid warmth of him surrounded me, familiar and devastating all at once, a cruel echo of every night I’d foolishly believed I was safe in his arms.

I looked up to scream, to curse him, but his mouth crashed down onto mine before I could form the words. It wasn’t a sweet kiss. It was desperate, punishing, and fueled by a raw hunger that made my head spin and my knees weaken. I sobbed into the kiss, the sound muffled by his lips, my body shaking with the force of my conflicting emotions.

I hated him. I hated the way he was holding me, the way he had lied, the way he was a Sinclair... everything I’d sworn to escape. And yet beneath the hatred ran something older and more stubborn, a current I couldn’t dam no matter how hard I tried.

As the kiss deepened, as his tongue traced the seam of my lips with a possessive rhythm that sent electricity coursing through my veins, my body began to melt. My resistance crumbled like sand castles against the tide, washing away despite my best efforts to hold onto my anger. Some primal part of me recognized him, wanted him, needed him, even as my rational mind screamed that this was wrong, that I should be fighting harder.

My tears were still flowing, hot and thick, carving rivers down my cheeks, but my resistance was dissolving with each passing second. For a long, agonizing minute, the world outside this office ceased to exist.

There were no ex-husbands, no bastard brothers, no slaps in the lobby, no shattered trust. There was just the fire of Jaxx’s mouth and the desperate way I found myself kissing him back, my bound hands twitching against the small of my back, wanting to touch him even as my mind screamed at me to push him away.

I wanted to sink into him, to disappear into the illusion one last time, to pretend that none of this was real and we were still just two people who’d found each other in the darkness. The kiss tasted of salt and desperation, of endings and impossible beginnings, of everything we could have been if only he’d trusted me with the truth.

For one treacherous heartbeat, I let myself imagine a version of this story where he had told me everything from the start, where there had been no Sinclair name standing between us like a loaded gun.

Then the phantom sting on my cheek from Sebastian’s slap returned with startling clarity. The memory of Jaxx’s cold voice saying "She’s mine" echoed through my mind, not as a romantic promise, but as a claim on a piece of property, something to be owned and controlled. The anger hit me like a physical wave, colder and sharper than before, cutting through the confusion and hurt.

I began to struggle again, throwing my weight back, wrenching my head to the side to break the contact. My heart hammered against my ribs as I fought against him, against the kiss that had momentarily made me forget everything. I finally managed to pull away, gasping for air, my lips swollen and my face a mess of mascara and salt.

Jaxx released my wrists, his eyes blown wide, searching my face for a mercy I no longer possessed. Whatever softness had existed in me moments ago had crystallized into something hard and unforgiving. I didn’t hesitate. I swung my hand with everything I had, channeling every ounce of betrayal and rage into the motion.

The slap echoed louder than the one downstairs, reverberating off the office walls. Jaxx’s head snapped to the side, his cheek instantly blooming with the red imprint of my palm. The mark satisfied something primal in me, visible proof of my resistance, my refusal to be claimed. For a moment neither of us moved, the silence between us thick with everything neither one of us dared to say.

"Don’t ever touch me again," I whispered, my voice vibrating with a lethal chill that surprised even me. "Now leave."

"Elena, please, just listen..."

"I’ve listened enough to your lies, Jaxx!" The words tore from my throat, raw and jagged. "I’ve had enough of you, enough of Graham, and enough of your entire godforsaken family tree! I don’t want to have anything to do with you. There was nothing between us, Jaxx. It was a fantasy. A delusion I created because I was lonely and broken and desperate to believe someone could actually care about me."

My voice cracked, but I pushed through. "And there will never be anything between us ever again. Not after this. Not after you stood by and watched me struggle while you held the map to the exit."

I walked over to the door, my legs shaking but holding firm, and grabbed the handle, wrenching it open with more force than necessary. The hallway stretched empty before us, but I felt like a thousand eyes were on us, judging, watching my humiliation unfold. Some distant, detached part of me wondered if anyone outside had heard the slap, if the walls of this office were as soundproof as I’d always assumed.

"I thought you had changed. I thought you were the one good thing to come out of this hellish year. But now I know better." I laughed, a bitter sound that tasted like ashes. "A leopard can never change its spots, Jaxx. You’re a Sinclair, through and through. Manipulation and control, it’s in your DNA. Now out! Leave!"

Jaxx stood up slowly, his face a mask of cold, quiet devastation. The red mark on his cheek stood out starkly against his pale skin. He looked at me for a long, agonizing moment, a look that promised this wasn’t over, a look that said he was merely retreating to regroup and plan his next move. The intensity in his gaze made my stomach clench, but I refused to look away first.

"I’ll go, Elena," he said, his voice dropping to that low, dangerous hum that once would have made me shiver with anticipation. Now it only filled me with dread. "I’ll go because you’re hurting and I’m the cause of it. But I’ll be back. I’m not Graham. I don’t give up on what belongs to me."

The possessiveness in those final words sent ice through my veins. I wasn’t his. I would never be his. He walked out, his stride long and purposeful, his shoulders squared as if he were leaving on his own terms rather than being thrown out.

The second he cleared the threshold, I slammed the door and threw the bolt, the metallic thud sounding like a coffin closing, like the final punctuation on a Chapter I desperately needed to end. I leaned my back against the wood, my legs finally giving out as the adrenaline drained from my system. I slid down the door until I was huddled on the floor, my face buried in my hands, my body folding in on itself.

The sobs came then, ugly, racking sounds that tore at my throat and burned in my chest. I pulled at my hair, the pain in my scalp a welcome distraction from the agony in my chest, from the humiliation that threatened to swallow me whole.

"God!" I choked out, the words muffled by my palms. "What did I just do? What have I done?"

The realization was a sickening weight in my stomach, heavy and nauseating. I had spent years trying to scrub the Sinclair grime off my skin, rebuilding myself piece by painful piece, only to fall straight into the arms of the one person who carried more of it than Graham ever could.

And I had done it willingly, eagerly even, blind to all the warning signs that should have been blazing red in my face. Every late-night phone call, every carefully timed appearance in my life, every gesture I’d once mistaken for tenderness now rearranged itself into a pattern I should have recognized months ago.

"I can’t believe it," I whispered into the empty office, my voice trembling with self-loathing. "I slept with two brothers. I’m so despicable. I’m so... gross."

The word felt inadequate for the revulsion churning in my gut, but I had no better way to describe the shame coating my skin like oil. The betrayal stung, sharp and insistent, but the shame proved worse, a deep, corrosive thing that ate at my sense of self. I had prided myself on my intuition, on my ability to read people, to navigate the shark-infested waters of the business world with my instincts intact. And yet, I had allowed myself to be played by Jaxx like a violin, hitting every note he wanted.

After everything he’d done back then, the subtle hints, the way he’d orbited my life without ever truly revealing himself, the careful manipulation disguised as friendship, I hadn’t learned a single thing. I had walked right into his trap with a smile on my face and my heart on my sleeve, practically gift-wrapped for his taking. I’d made the same mistake twice, just with a different face and a better set of lines, a more polished performance.

"I didn’t learn," I sobbed, clutching my knees to my chest as the cold marble floor seeped into my bones, chilling me from the outside in. "I’m so stupid. So incredibly, pathetically stupid."

The words echoed in the empty room, a damning verdict I couldn’t escape, and somewhere beneath the grief, a small and frightened voice wondered if I would ever trust myself again.
