Chapter 44: Chapter 0044: Who Touched You Elena?

Elena’s Point Of View

The cold air in the grand foyer hit me like a physical slap the second I crossed the threshold, but the silence inside proved far worse. It hung heavy and suffocating, thick with the stench of a dying marriage, the kind of silence that seeps into your bones and reminds you of every unspoken resentment festering beneath a roof you once called home.

I stood there for a moment, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness, wondering how a house so vast and beautiful could feel like a tomb.

I had barely planted my bare foot on the fifth step of the sweeping marble staircase when the sharp click of leather soles echoed from the dark landing above. My heart lurched, though I refused to let it show. I forced my spine straight, forced the old instinct to flee back down into the pit of my stomach where it belonged.

"And where do you think you’re coming from, Elena?"

His voice cut straight through the shadows... low, gravelly, and dripping with that lethal, possessive entitlement that used to make me shrink into myself, make me apologize for things I hadn’t even done. Not tonight. Tonight, it only made the blood in my veins boil over, a slow simmer building toward something I could no longer contain.

I froze, my hand tightening on the dark mahogany banister until my knuckles turned stark white. Slowly, deliberately, I turned to face him, steadying my breath, refusing to let the tremor in my chest reach my voice. Five years ago, that voice alone would have sent me scrambling for an excuse. Tonight, it only sharpened my resolve.

Graham stood at the top of the stairs, framed by the dim amber light of the chandelier, looking every bit the man who had built an empire out of control and charm. His designer grey dress shirt hung unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves aggressively rolled up to his forearms, black slacks loose on his hips. He looked like he’d just stepped out of a photoshoot for Controlling Husbands Monthly.

His jaw clenched so hard the bone looked ready to snap, and a crystal tumbler of scotch dangled loosely from his right hand. The thick veins along his arm bulged under his pale skin... a clear sign he was barely holding back a thunderstorm, one he’d been brewing since the moment I walked out the door hours earlier.

I almost laughed at the theater of it all, the way he arranged himself like a man wronged, when he was the one who had shattered everything first.

I raised a single brow and slowly ran my fingers through my hair, still wildly tousled from the damp night wind and the terrifying, intoxicating proximity of Jaxx’s mouth just thirty minutes ago. The memory alone sent a small thrill through me, one I fought hard to keep off my face. I let the silence stretch, savoring the way it seemed to unnerve him more than any words could.

"Is that how you greet your wife now?" I asked, my voice carrying a quiet, dangerous lilt that surprised even me. "With an interrogation?"

Graham didn’t answer right away. He descended the stairs slowly, step by agonizing step, his dark eyes locked onto mine like a hawk tracking prey. The heavy thud of his shoes against the marble sounded like the beat of a war drum, each footfall a warning I chose to ignore. I counted his steps instead, an old habit from years of learning to predict his moods before they detonated.

"Answer the fucking question, Elena," he growled, stopping three steps above me so he could loom over my frame, using his height the way he always did... like a weapon. "Where were you? Look at you. Your dress is wrinkled. Your hair is a mess." He paused, his eyes narrowing into slits as he locked onto my mouth. "And your lipstick is smudged all over your face."

"I was out, Graham," I replied smoothly, tilting my chin up to meet his furious glare head-on, refusing to let the old fear creep back into my spine. "Not that my whereabouts are any of your business anymore."

A harsh, disbelieving laugh tore from his throat, though his face remained entirely devoid of humor. He took another step down, closing the distance until the heat radiating off his body hit me, familiar and suffocating all at once. I remembered a time when that heat had felt like safety instead of a threat, and the thought made something in my chest twist painfully.

"Not my business?" he repeated, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly soft, toxic register he used whenever he felt his control slipping. "You are my wife. Everything you do, everywhere you go, every single breath you take in this city is my business."

"You lost the right to say that word the second you brought your ’cousin’ into our home!" I spat, the word dripping with raw, concentrated venom, five years of swallowed anger finally finding its voice. My hands trembled, not from fear this time, but from the sheer effort of holding back everything I had wanted to scream at him for months.

Graham’s jaw flexed violently. "We’ve been over this. It isn’t what you think..."

"Oh, really?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "So I didn’t walk into our wing and find her wrapped in my silk robe? I didn’t see her sitting on our bed, drinking the wine I bought, while you stood there and let your mother talk to me like I was garbage? You threw me out, Graham! You let them throw my bags out of our room!"

"I was trying to protect you from a scene!" he roared, his voice exploding through the quiet house, shattering what remained of the silence. He slammed his tumbler down on the wide mahogany banister, the heavy glass cracking against the polished wood. "You blew everything out of proportion, like you always do! You threw a hysterical tantrum and ran off like a child!"

"I walked away from a disrespect I should have left five years ago!" I yelled back, stepping up one tread so I stood directly in his face, my chest heaving against the violet silk of my dress. "You broke every single promise you ever made to me. You traded me in the second things got uncomfortable!"

Graham’s breath hitched, his dark eyes flashing with something ugly... a volatile mix of bruised pride, guilt, and raw, suffocating possessiveness. He stepped down to my level, crowding my personal space until his chest practically brushed mine, his shadow swallowing me whole. For a fleeting second, I saw something flicker across his face that almost resembled fear, quickly buried beneath his usual mask of fury.

"You think because you walked out that door for a few hours, the rules changed?" he whispered, his face inches from mine, his eyes raking over my features with a terrifying intensity. "You think you can just wander around town looking like a fucking siren, smelling like heavy scotch and cheap cologne?"

He leaned in closer, his nostrils flaring as he took a deep, aggressive breath, inhaling the air around my neck. Instantly, his entire body went rigid, and for a moment I almost pitied the panic flickering behind his eyes. I watched the realization dawn on him, watched the careful architecture of his control begin to crack.

"That’s not your drink," he growled, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a dark, dangerous edge. "And that’s sure as hell not my cologne."

I held his gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to let him see the frantic pounding of my heart against my ribs. "I don’t owe you an explanation for what I drink or who I talk to."

"Who touched you, Elena?"

The question hit the air like a live wire. Graham’s hand shot out, wrapping around my upper arm in an iron grip. It wasn’t enough to leave a mark, but the possessive force behind it was unmistakable, and something inside me recoiled even as I held my ground. My mind flashed briefly to Jaxx’s hands, gentle where Graham’s were cruel, and the contrast steadied me.

"You let another man touch you?" he snarled, his eyes turning wild, bloodshot with an unhinged rage I had never seen in him before, not even in our worst years. "You let another man lay his fucking filthy hands on you?!"

"Let go of me, Graham!" I demanded, my voice icy, refusing to show fear even as my pulse hammered wildly beneath my skin.

Instead of releasing me, Graham yanked me forward, pulling my waist flush against his hard frame until I was trapped against him on the narrow step. His breath came hot and ragged against my skin, smelling heavily of neat scotch. His fingers dug deeper into my arm, his other hand coming up to forcefully cup the back of my neck, holding my head still as he leaned down, invading every inch of my space. Panic flared briefly in my chest, but I refused to let it show, burying it beneath years of practiced composure.

"Remember who you belong to, Elena!" he breathed against my ear, his voice thick with a dark, terrifying desperation. "You are my wife! You’re mine, and you can only ever be mine! Do you hear me?! You pledged yourself to me at an altar, and no little night out on the town is going to change that. Never fucking forget who owns you!"

The sheer arrogance of his words, the terrifying entitlement dripping from his mouth, ripped away the last lingering thread of my patience. The timid, quiet girl who had suffered through five years of his family’s subtle cruelty died right then and there on those stairs, and in her place stood someone I barely recognized... someone made of steel and fury. I felt the shift happen inside me, a quiet, seismic collapse of everything I used to be, replaced by something harder and infinitely more dangerous.

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t cry.

I looked him straight in the eyes, my gaze cold enough to freeze blood, a bitter, lethal smirk curling my lips.

"You think you own me?" I whispered, my voice chillingly soft, carrying an edge of pure defiance. "If I want a man, Graham, then I’m going to get a man. And nothing you, your mother, or anybody else in this godforsaken family says is ever going to change that."

Graham froze, his pupils dilating in absolute shock, as though I had struck him. "What did you just say to me?"

"You heard me," I hissed, leaning into his hold rather than shrinking back, meeting his fury with my own burning fire. "You got yourself a whore in our guest room. So why shouldn’t I go out and get myself a boyfriend?"

A harsh, violent gasp escaped his throat. "Elena..."

"We’re open now, aren’t we?" I continued, my voice dripping with dangerous sarcasm as I twisted the knife deeper into his ego. "That’s the game you started when you let her sleep in my bed. Consider this me embracing the arrangement. And don’t worry, darling... very soon, you’ll be meeting him."

Graham’s face drained of all color, replaced instantly by a terrifying, dark flushed red. The grip on my neck tightened until my skin pinched, his chest heaving violently against mine, his composure crumbling before my eyes. For the first time in five years, I watched him lose himself completely, and instead of fear, I only felt a cold, quiet satisfaction.

"You wouldn’t dare, Elena," he growled through gritted teeth, his voice shaking with an unbelievable, suffocating rage. "I swear to God, if you bring another man into my orbit, I will destroy him. I will destroy you. You wouldn’t dare pull a stunt like that."

I tilted my head, studying his frantic, unhinged eyes, and let out a soft, mocking chuckle that cut right through his threats, savoring the unfamiliar power of watching him unravel. Something inside me, long buried beneath years of quiet obedience, finally exhaled.

"Try me, hubby."
