Second Genesis

Chapter 401: Here

Chapter 401: Here

Grey didn’t know what it felt like to be a criminal or locked up. Was that because he was too quick and agile for the cops to catch him that one time—okay, maybe those several times? Yes. But whose business was that of? Was it his fault that those old fuckers only knew how to do routine traffic stops and hadn’t seen a treadmill since their wives stopped pretending to moan in bed?

What he did know was that if he had ever been caught trespassing—allegedly—it probably would have felt a whole lot like this.

Other than being able to strong arm The Boundless into bringing Amunet and the others along—despite Amunet’s not-so-subtle attempts to avoid that fate—Grey practically had control of nothing else.

Soon, the ground around the city was sealed up using some magical treasure, and they were shooting off toward the capital again like nothing at all had happened.

It was too odd, frankly. And Grey felt that there had to be a reason that The Boundless had the perfect method to seal up the ground like that. One would have thought they were the ones to originally do the seal in the first place.

But if that was the case, shouldn’t they know how it worked?

And if they knew how it worked, why would they ever send Lloron and Kaito here to kill the War Head? They should have known what would happen if they did that?

Clearly by the way Lloron and Kaito reacted to The Boundless’ appearance there was no surprise by either party as to the reason why they were here. So what the hell?

It was like they were flaunting in Grey’s face that he was correct about everything from the very start.

What Grey didn’t understand was why The Boundless wanted to bring him back to the capital city so badly. If The Boundless wanted something on his person, couldn’t he have just taken it right then and there? What good was all of this?

That was what Grey was truly wary about.

However, like this, Grey managed to keep the transportation method he had taken from Frantz. It could go to any location it had been set to before, which meant that Grey could also return to Zone 234 whenever as well.

Whatever happened, Grey guessed that it would just have to happen.

He leaned back in a chair and kicked his feet up without a care.

"Where are we going?" Brad finally asked. He had just been dragged along and still didn’t know what was going on.

"To the capital city of the empire." Grey said with a yawn. He had been running around for a long while now, he really did need a nap. No... more like a full three-day long sleep.

His stamina had hit rock bottom and then shot back up so many times by now that it was a miracle he was still on his feet. Then somewhere between all of that, he had managed to rip all his muscles, tendons, and ligaments apart to build them back up.

Grey’s intuition also told him that if he finally got a real rest, he would wake up a lot stronger than he was now. But sleeping was a luxury at this point.

"Oh..." Brad said. "Why does it feel..."

Brad looked around. The vessel The Boundless had was certainly large, and the four of them had their own private room, but it still didn’t feel safe to just talk it out.

"It probably is." Grey said with a shrug. "But it will be fine. If anything, I’m the target. They’ll leave you three alone. He didn’t even want to take you."

Brad nodded, but that didn’t exactly put him at ease. By now he knew that Grey was their real ticket out of here.

"Well, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. I know Mauve wants to as well. But we’re not as strong as you two."

Grey’s eyes were half closed, but they opened when Brad said this. He looked over at the man for a moment, but Brad thought that Grey was going to go to sleep, so he was already looking out the window as the landscape zoomed by them.

Something clattered on the table they all shared.

Ma Famille rolled to a stop.

"You can use it. Not sure how it works, but maybe it will help. I wouldn’t do anything too big or drastic until we get to the capital, though. I have a feeling that there’ll be a lot more things that could help you all out there."

Brad looked over with a blink. He reached over and picked Ma Famille up from the table, not sure what to expect. But when he saw that it was a Mystic item, his eyes went wide.

How had Grey managed to hide this from The Boundless?

Well, in reality, Grey didn’t. He just used a slight sleight of hand trick and kept it in his pants. The Boundless was so focused on finding spatial items he hadn’t noticed, especially since Grey’s Resonant Frame had been activated.

Because his Resonant Frame was active, he could spread out a sensory domain of sorts. Not only was he able to use it to potentially obscure his Inventory from being easily sensed, but he could also hide the resonance of his treasures as well.

If someone as powerful as The Boundless was actively looking, there was little Grey could do about it. But if it was to obscure something he wasn’t looking for in the first place...

Now that was a lot more possible than not.

"Grey, this..."

The world around them suddenly froze and every one of them could only look around to see a land of greys, whites, and blacks.

Grey’s pupils constricted as Amunet opened her eyes as well. She had been pretending all this time not to be paying much attention, but at this point, none of them had any right not to pay attention.

The recap episode was here.
