Second Genesis
Chapter 690: What Was That?
Grey’s hand closed around the hilt of The Last Measure, and the resistance sharpened immediately as the sword tested the shape of his Neural Frame. The Legacy carried the philosophy of its former master so deeply that Grey could feel what it wanted without needing to guess, a path stripped of wasted motion where every route existed only to carry intent toward a single answer as directly as possible.
He’d done something similar with The Virtueless, though back then changing his Neural Frame had required far more deliberate effort and a much rougher understanding of what he was actually manipulating. Soul Link changed that completely, opening the emotional and metaphysical layer of the Frame beneath the physical pathways and letting Grey feel the part of himself the Legacy was truly judging rather than only the structure built on top of it.
The Last Measure didn’t care whether Grey knew swordsmanship or possessed a powerful Linear Frame, it wanted someone who could embody reduction itself. Grey followed that demand backward through the pressure entering his body, then began folding his own pathways into the pattern the sword expected to find.
His Branching routes tightened first, unnecessary possibilities collapsing while Recursive loops stopped feeding back into themselves unless they served the shortest path forward. Resonant spread pulled closer to the body, the Linear portions narrowed even further, and within moments the sprawling complexity of Grey’s Neural Frame had been reshaped into something brutally simple, where intent, action and result seemed almost indistinguishable from one another.
The sword pushed once more, searching for inconsistency, but Soul Link let Grey adjust before the Legacy could even finish deciding whether something was wrong. By the time The Last Measure found the shape it wanted, every meaningful pathway in Grey’s Frame pointed toward the same conclusion with almost nothing wasted between beginning and end.
The resistance disappeared.
Crimson lines running through the silver-black blade brightened for a moment, then settled into a low glow as Grey lifted the weapon from the platform without any further struggle. The crowd was still silent when he turned the sword once in his hand, examined the edge with mild interest, then stored it away and walked toward Choirpiercer as though nothing unusual had happened.
The spear reacted before he touched it, the blue bands around its pale shaft lighting while the translucent spearhead separated into several overlapping positions at once. Resonant pressure spread outward from the weapon in widening layers, testing whether Grey could extend himself beyond the limits of his own body without allowing the connection between those distant points to weaken.
This one was considerably easier.
Grey opened Soul Link again and allowed the Resonant portions of his Neural Frame to stretch outward, not simply expanding his influence, but repeating the same underlying intent through every layer. The farther the pattern spread, the more Choirpiercer searched for some tiny break between source and projection, yet Grey kept adjusting each route until every extension still felt like an uninterrupted part of the same whole.
The spear wanted someone who didn’t consider distance a separation, so Grey gave it exactly that.
His Frame spread farther, one Resonant pathway becoming several and then dozens, while the remaining Frames anchored the structure underneath and stopped the whole thing from degrading into noise. Choirpiercer’s pressure increased for a few seconds, then faded as the translucent spearhead collapsed back into one position and the weapon settled naturally into Grey’s hand.
A murmur finally began moving through the auction hall, though it sounded considerably different from the laughter that had followed his first attempt. Grey ignored all of it, stored Choirpiercer beside The Last Measure, then turned toward the Thousand Door Bulwark and immediately realized why the final Legacy would be the most annoying.
The shield’s overlapping plates were already shifting before Grey reached it, opening one defensive route while closing another and continually reorganizing the structure without ever leaving a true weakness behind. Where the sword wanted reduction and the spear wanted expansion, the Bulwark wanted possibility, an endless willingness to abandon one answer and create another before the first failure could become fatal.
Grey reached toward it and felt the Legacy push against the entire complexity of his Neural Frame.
That complexity was the problem.
His natural Branching Frame gave him options, but the Thousand Door Bulwark wanted more than someone capable of choosing between several existing routes. It wanted a Frame that treated every route as temporary, something capable of rebuilding itself around whatever the next threat demanded without becoming attached to the answer that had worked a moment earlier.
Grey closed his eyes and let Soul Link sink deeper.
Instead of forcing his Neural Frame into one particular arrangement, he loosened the structure itself, allowing Branching pathways to split and die while Recursive routes rebuilt around the gaps they left behind. Linear sections hardened only long enough to carry force where it needed to go, Resonant pathways shifted information between every changing point, and the entire Frame began behaving like something alive, something that had never stopped deciding what it wanted to become, only to decide again in the next moment.
The Bulwark pushed harder, its plates accelerating while the Dominion inside it repeatedly changed the question Grey was being asked. A route meant to absorb force became one designed to redirect it, that answer broke apart before the Legacy could finish judging it, then another formed elsewhere through a completely different combination of Frames.
Grey followed every change without falling behind. That was the difference Soul Link made.
A Dominion Class Legacy could examine the pattern presented to it and decide whether that pattern matched the philosophy of its inheritance, but Soul Link gave Grey access to the layer that produced the pattern in the first place. The Legacy could keep changing what it wanted to see, while Grey could keep changing the thing it was looking at.
Eventually, the last moving plate stopped.
The rest followed one after another until the entire Thousand Door Bulwark folded into a single stable configuration, and only then did Grey open his eyes and wrap his hand around the inner grip. There was no resistance left when he lifted it from the platform, and the silence throughout the hall deepened as Grey stored the third Dominion Class Legacy beside the other two.
He adjusted the front of his suit jacket before turning toward Breejara, whose professional smile had survived the entire process even though several of her eyes looked considerably less friendly than they had before. Grey studied her face for a moment, let his gaze drift down toward the enormous spider body beneath it, then slowly shook his head.
"It really is a shame."
Breejara’s smile tightened enough that Grey could practically see the violence being strangled behind it, though when she spoke, her voice remained painfully sweet.
"I would like to kindly remind our distinguished guest that his auction account is currently operating at a negative balance, and all outstanding balances must be reduced to zero before tonight’s auction concludes."
Grey grinned at her. "Don’t you worry about me."
He stepped onto the teleportation platform before Breejara could add anything else, and the central stage disappeared beneath a wash of light as his private bubble returned around him. Amunet was still sitting where he’d left her, though the look she gave him now was considerably different from the one she’d worn when he started bidding.
Grey walked straight toward her, stopped between her knees and hooked one finger beneath her chin, lifting her face until her amber eyes met his.
"What was that you were saying again, princess?"
