Chapter 429: Chapter 402: Dylan Heston, You Still Have Me (1)
When Nancy Hughes got up, Georgia Thorne had already made breakfast. “How did you let Blue get so fat?”
Nancy Hughes sat down and took a sip of congee. “After I feed her a meal, she runs next door for another one. How could she not be fat? Look at her little belly, it’s sticking right out!”
Georgia Thorne squatted down and felt Blue’s belly. Sure enough, it was just a ball of fat.
“Alright, stop meowing. I’ll get you some food in a bit.” Georgia Thorne petted its head, but Blue only meowed more insistently.
In the afternoon, Nancy Hughes gave Zoey Zane a call. She was relieved to hear that Zoey was feeling alright.
“By the way, are you still planning to work at that company? Don’t you want to study design?”
Nancy Hughes felt like she had jinxed it. She had just asked Georgia Thorne about her job, and then Georgia got fired.
“Well, maybe this is for the best. It’s not like that was your field anyway!” Nancy Hughes said, feeling indignant on Georgia’s behalf after hearing the whole story. “I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you come work at my company? Then we could work together!”
Georgia Thorne did find a new job, but it wasn’t at Elliot Sheridan’s company.
‘I really spoke without thinking,’ Nancy thought. ‘How could Georgia Thorne possibly come to Elliot Sheridan’s company? What if they ran into each other coming to or from work? How awkward would that be?’
Georgia Thorne went to Archetype Company, a firm specializing in design. The pay and benefits were just as good as Nancy’s.
After work, Nancy Hughes would meet up with Dylan Heston. Most of the time, he would come to her company to pick her up, and then they would go to the supermarket together to buy groceries before heading back to his apartment to cook.
Dylan Heston was in charge of the cooking, while she was responsible for helping out and washing the dishes.
After dinner, the two would curl up on the sofa and watch movies or trashy TV shows.
If only she didn’t have to go home at night, everything would be even more perfect.
Nancy Hughes wanted to spend more time with him, but unfortunately, Georgia Thorne was still at home.
Dylan Heston walked Nancy Hughes to the entrance of her apartment building. “Oh, by the way, I’m having dinner with Sharon this weekend. Want to come?”
Since getting together with him, Nancy Hughes had rarely dined with his friends.
For one, Dylan Heston was worried she would feel uncomfortable. For another, his friends were all too busy, and it was rare for them to have time to get together.
Nancy Hughes thought for a moment. “Sure.”
When Saturday came, Nancy Hughes saw Georgia Thorne cooped up at home all alone and worried she was getting depressed, so she decided to ask her to come out with her.
“It’s a rare chance to get out and relax. Hurry up and change.” She quickly pushed Georgia Thorne into the bedroom.
Georgia Thorne changed into a fresh set of clothes. “Where are we going?”
Georgia Thorne had been down in the dumps because of what happened with her company and hadn’t shown much interest in anything else.
“You’ll know when we get there!”
Nancy Hughes had never mentioned Dylan Heston to Georgia Thorne, so when Georgia saw Nancy standing with him, her jaw nearly hit the floor.
It was hard to imagine Nancy Hughes liking Dylan Heston’s type of man.
Georgia Thorne didn’t know Dylan Heston well; they were merely nodding acquaintances who had met a few times because of a certain someone.
Her mind filled with questions, she sat awkwardly beside Nancy Hughes and took a sip of her juice. It felt cold.
Even colder was the gaze coming from across the table. She lowered her head, trying her best to ignore that person’s line of sight.
‘I thought I was just going out with Nancy,’ she thought. ‘Who knew it was going to be this kind of gathering? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come.’
‘Nancy Hughes is one of those people who ditches her friends for a guy. The second Dylan Heston showed up, she completely forgot I even existed.’
She had just come back from the restroom, but Dylan Heston and Nancy Hughes were already gone.
Leaving her to face Elliot Sheridan alone.
Meanwhile, Nancy Hughes had deliberately left with Dylan Heston, wanting to give the two of them a chance to be alone together.
She felt that Georgia Thorne liked Elliot Sheridan, and that Elliot liked her too. She just didn’t know why they had broken up in the first place.
When she brought this up with Dylan Heston, he remained silent.
She had a feeling Dylan Heston knew why Elliot Sheridan had broken up with Georgia back in Akashima, but he just wasn’t willing to tell her.
The more reluctant Dylan Heston was to talk, the more Nancy Hughes pestered him. “I promise I won’t tell anyone.”
Nancy Hughes held up her fingers toward Dylan Heston, swearing earnestly.
“When the time is right, you’ll find out,” Dylan Heston said suddenly, after studying her seriously for a long moment.
“…”
This left Nancy Hughes feeling utterly frustrated. ‘What’s the difference between saying that and saying nothing at all?’
“They’ll sort out their own business. You don’t need to worry about it.”
Nancy Hughes let out a defiant huff and glared up at him. “Georgia Thorne is my best friend. I’m not just ‘worrying’ for no reason!”
‘If Elliot Sheridan still wants to be with Georgia Thorne, he should put in some effort, instead of making everyone miserable like this.’
Nancy Hughes was worried that if the two really did rekindle their old flame, she would just be interrupting them by going back. That was why she had intentionally left with Dylan Heston first.
She would go home later that night.
Back at Dylan Heston’s apartment, she tilted her head and looked at the man busy in the kitchen. “Why are you such a good cook? Who taught you?”
The kitchen door was open, and from where she sat in the dining room, she had a perfect view of the man’s tall, straight back.
“From my mother.”
“Your mother?” Nancy Hughes froze for a second, then raised an eyebrow. In all the time they’d been together, she had never heard Dylan Heston mention his family.
With the exception of Liam Sheffield, of course.
Dylan Heston rarely brought up his family in front of her. Most of the time, he seemed like a solitary person, as if he had no family at all.
Although their relationship was just between the two of them, she was still curious about Dylan Heston’s family.
‘A man like Dylan Heston probably takes after his father more,’ she mused.
Dylan Heston would mention his mother was a kind and capable woman, and that he had learned everything he knew about cooking from her.
Unfortunately, his mother had been in poor health and passed away at a young age.
Nancy Hughes had heard about his difficult childhood, and her heart ached with the urge to hold him.
Dylan Heston spoke about his childhood. In all those stories, the person he mentioned most was his mother. As for his father, he didn’t say a single word.
She wasn’t stupid. If Dylan Heston didn’t want to bring him up, it must be a taboo subject.
She couldn’t help but reach out and hug him from behind. “Is it my turn to say it now? ‘Dylan Heston, you still have me!'”
She gave him a mischievous wink, throwing his own words back at him.
Dylan Heston rarely shared his past with anyone. He felt his past was shameful, and on his step-by-step journey to where he was today, he had never shared it with a soul.
Perhaps, starting today, he had made an exception.
A smile curved his lips. He turned and pulled her into his arms, then his hands moved down, lifting her by her hips and setting her on the kitchen counter.
“This alone isn’t enough,” he said, his dark eyes filled with challenge. Nancy Hughes’s face flushed red as she squirmed. “Let me down!”
“I don’t want to let go!” As he spoke, his arms tightened around her, and he pressed his body against hers.
That night, it was only natural that she stayed over.
Georgia Thorne called to ask if she was coming home.
However, Dylan Heston answered the phone. The reason he gave was that she was too tired and probably couldn’t get out of bed.
Georgia Thorne was an experienced woman and understood exactly what Dylan Heston meant. She calmly told him to take good care of Nancy, then hung up.
Nancy Hughes, who had been sleeping beside him, indignantly snatched the phone. “Why would you say that to Georgia? What if she…”
What Dylan Heston had just said to Georgia Thorne was far too suggestive.
Dylan Heston rolled over, pinning Nancy Hughes beneath him in one swift move. “What are you afraid of? She already knows about us, doesn’t she? We’re all adults. What’s there to hide?”
“…” ‘But I still get embarrassed!’
Nancy Hughes balled her fists and pounded on Dylan Heston’s chest, but the man didn’t resist, letting her hit him as she pleased.
She threw a couple of random punches, but when she saw he didn’t even react, she remembered he was a trained fighter, which only made her more frustrated.
She huffed and turned her back to him to sleep.
“Angry?”
“Go away, don’t touch me!” Under the covers, she angrily swatted his hand away.
“Are you really this shy? Should I call Georgia Thorne back and explain?”
“…” ‘What’s there to explain?’
‘Georgia Thorne isn’t an idiot. Calling her back to explain would just be protesting too much and making things more obvious.’
The thought just made her angrier. She grabbed the hand Dylan Heston had placed on her waist and bit down hard.
She didn’t let go, biting for a while, but when Dylan Heston still didn’t make a sound, she released his hand on her own.
“Why’d you stop biting?”
It seemed she could never stay angry at Dylan Heston for very long.
When she woke up the next day, she had forgotten all about it.
She let out a huge yawn and hugged the man beside her. “So sleepy!”
Dylan Heston almost never slept in, but after spending so many nights with Nancy Hughes, he found that he didn’t want to get up either as he watched her sleep.
He just wanted to hold her in his arms forever. It was a wonderful feeling, and he wished they could stay like this all day.
It had to be said, he had been “infected” by Nancy Hughes in many ways.
Unconsciously, their habits and interests were starting to align. It wasn’t a bad change at all.
They didn’t fight or argue; their relationship only grew stronger.
Dylan Heston picked up her phone. “Georgia Thorne called earlier. I answered it for you.”
Nancy Hughes really did want to go back to sleep. Certain… activities… were truly exhausting.
But Dylan Heston’s words instantly chased all sleepiness away. Her eyes flew open and she snatched the phone from his hand. “What did you say to Georgia?”
‘Please don’t let it be another one of those suggestive conversations from last night.’
“Nothing much. She just asked when you were coming home, and I said you were still asleep.”
On the surface, his words seemed innocent enough, but she still felt like something was off.
She found the call log and saw that Georgia Thorne had indeed called her at a little after seven that morning.
She let go of Dylan Heston, threw off the covers, and got out of bed, walking out of the room to call Georgia Thorne.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Sleeping Beauty, finally gracing me with a call!” Georgia Thorne teased from the other end of the line.
‘Sleeping last night, still sleeping this morning… just how tired was she?’
