Secret Marriage: The CEO's Pampered Wife
Chapter 440: You're Basically the Third Party
But in that moment, she calmly took the watch from Rose Everett’s hand and replied coolly, “Thank you. I’ll return it to him.”
Nancy Hughes’s reaction wasn’t what Rose Everett had expected, and for a moment, Rose was a little stunned.
Her tone softened as she said, “Thanks!”
“You’re welcome.”
Since Nancy didn’t ask her why, Rose had no opening to explain how it happened.
She narrowed her beautiful eyes. ‘This Nancy Hughes is more formidable than I thought. I really underestimated her.’
Nearly everyone in the office probably knew that Dylan Heston had driven Rose Everett to work that morning. After Rose left, all eyes were on Nancy, watching her every move.
‘How ridiculous. Why are they so interested in my business?’
She nonchalantly put the watch in her bag, then opened a thick file and started looking up information.
An unknown amount of time passed. Seeing that Nancy Hughes still showed no reaction, the onlookers lost interest and went back to their work.
In reality, only she knew what was going on in her heart.
A watch is a man’s personal accessory. Except in special circumstances, a man would never take it off.
She knew all too well what that implied.
Her composure was shattered by the watch, and a crack formed in her trust for Dylan Heston.
There were some things that only she understood.
After work, Nancy Hughes left the company alone.
She had texted Dylan Heston today, but he hadn’t replied, which was unusual.
People were whispering behind her, but she pretended not to hear and quickened her pace.
On the way home, she stopped by a pharmacy.
She opened the door to her apartment but didn’t hear Blue’s meow. It took her a long moment to remember that Georgia Thorne and that fat cat had already moved out.
Thankfully, there was still some instant ramen in the house. She boiled some water, made a bowl, and set it on the coffee table, eating while watching TV.
At last night’s auction, her painting had sold for over seventy million to a foreign man.
She swallowed a mouthful of noodles. ‘Theo Heston sure makes money easily,’ she thought wryly.
After watching the boring news, she took some cold medicine and had a shower. A wave of drowsiness washed over her.
Trying not to think about anything, she flopped onto the bed and fell asleep.
In the middle of the night, she woke up feeling hot.
She opened her eyes and checked the time. It was just after three, still several hours before she had to go to work.
Her throat was too dry and hoarse to speak. She got up, poured a glass of hot water, and went back to sleep.
She and Dylan Heston hadn’t been in contact for a week. These past few days, the way people at the office looked at her was tinged with mockery.
It was as if she had already been dumped by Dylan Heston, and Rose Everett had become his new favorite.
Even Gwen Gunn, an older colleague, came over to comfort her. “Dylan Heston isn’t that kind of person. You have to trust him!”
‘Trust him? Hah, I’m starting to not even trust myself.’
On Saturday, she met with her landlord and told them she would be moving out as soon as possible.
The landlord was curious. “But you seemed settled in. Why the sudden move?”
Not long ago, they had just paid three months’ rent, and now she was suddenly breaking the lease.
“Sorry, my friend who lived with me got married. I can’t afford such a big place by myself, so I need to find somewhere new.”
“Oh, I see. Well, all right then.”
Nancy Hughes set the move-out date for the following week to give herself some time to find a new place.
The landlord was quite reasonable and agreed.
Over the weekend, she went out house-hunting and looked at quite a few places.
She still couldn’t make up her mind about where to live.
Some were too far from the office with inconvenient commutes, while the ones that were closer were too expensive for her to afford.
Eventually, she found a place that was passably satisfactory.
But before she could move in, news about Zane Lennox suddenly broke.
At the time, she was at the office. When she saw the news about Zane Lennox’s death, she bolted out of the company without a second thought.
She truly hadn’t expected Theo Heston to kill someone. Zane Lennox was dead, just like that.
When she arrived at the police station, she saw Zane Lennox’s parents weeping in agony, grieving the devastating news that had come so suddenly.
No one can bear the pain of a white-haired person burying their black-haired child. Zane Lennox’s mother fainted on the spot.
She stood frozen in place, suddenly blaming herself. ‘I should have gone to the police instead of cowering in fear.’
‘If it weren’t for my cowardice, Zane Lennox might not have died.’
‘It was all my fault.’
Besides Zane Lennox’s parents, Nancy Hughes was surprised to see the man who had vanished from her world.
Dylan Heston walked out with another man, his expression cold. He saw the chaos at the entrance but showed little emotion.
