Secret Marriage: The CEO's Pampered Wife

Chapter 452: Nancy Hughes, Let's Get Back Together

  • Next Chapter

“You want me to leave?”

Amidst the silence, Dylan Heston suddenly said this. She rolled her eyes in exasperation. ‘Did he really not understand my subtext?’

“It’s getting late!” she said, taking a sip of water and glancing at him out of the corner of her eye.

‘That’s right, you can go. Just go!’

“Mm, I’ll stay and sleep with you tonight!”

PFFT! She sprayed a mouthful of water, shocked by Dylan Heston’s words. She stared at him in disbelief. “What did you say!”

She hastily grabbed a couple of tissues to wipe the water dripping from the corner of her mouth.

“Didn’t we sleep together last night, too?”

“…”

She felt like she could cough up blood. How could last night even compare to today?

“I was drunk last night!” she said, her face stern.

Dylan Heston was just as cold. “Mm, I know.”

‘You know, so why don’t you get the hell out!’

“You know I can’t hold my liquor. I might have slept with anyone who was in front of me at that moment!” she said, gritting her teeth viciously. ‘That should get the point across!’

“That’s why I won’t give anyone else that chance!”

‘How is this getting more and more convoluted?’ That wasn’t what she was trying to say at all.

“Nancy Hughes, let’s get back together!”

Dylan Heston’s next words left Nancy Hughes completely stunned.

‘What did he just say?’

“…That’s impossible!” After a long moment, she shook her head.

“Why is it impossible? Because of my engagement to someone else?”

‘The engagement was a year ago. They’ve probably already gotten married by now!’

She gave a bitter laugh. “Dylan Heston, I don’t like you anymore!”

“Is that so? Then why were you so clingy last night, constantly murmuring my name, saying you liked me and never wanted to leave me for the rest of your life? And now that you’re sober, you can just act like you don’t know me?”

‘I couldn’t have been that bad when I was drunk, right?’ She didn’t believe what Dylan Heston was saying, but seeing the sincere look on his face, it seemed possible that something like that could have happened.

When Dylan Heston lied, he was so deadpan that you couldn’t doubt him.

In reality, Nancy Hughes had indeed been clingy last night, but she had also spent a lot of time cursing him out.

What was that saying? The deeper the hatred, the deeper the love. He believed that was exactly how Nancy Hughes felt about him.

She was a little embarrassed, having not expected to act like such a mess in front of Dylan Heston when she drank. “That was just because I was drunk!”

Things that happen when you’re drunk don’t count.

“Do you dare to question your own heart? Do you dare say you don’t really love me?” Dylan Heston grabbed one of her hands and pressed it against her chest. The searing heat from his palm transferred to her heart, making the already hard-to-suppress emotions swell even more. “Truly not loving someone means being indifferent. But with me, you feel everything—joy, anger, sorrow. Can you feel your heartbeat? It’s racing because of me, isn’t it?”

She had to admit, this man was too confident, too sure of himself.

Even after being apart for a year, it was as if he could still read her mind with unerring accuracy.

It was like that character in the recent hit movie who could eavesdrop on other people’s thoughts.

But movies were movies, and reality was reality. Because of his words, her heart was beating faster and faster.

There was no denying it—her heart was racing because of Dylan Heston, and she didn’t want to deny that she still liked him.

But, they truly couldn’t be together!

Dylan Heston saw too many emotions flicker across her face, the most prominent being uncertainty. “Or is it that you still can’t let go of Zane Lennox’s death?”

The moment Zane Lennox’s name was mentioned, her pupils instantly dilated.

For over a year, no one had mentioned that name in front of her. She had buried it deep, deep in her heart.

“Dylan Heston, it was your father who killed Zane Lennox! One day, he’ll get the retribution he deserves!”

“He’s already gotten his retribution!”

‘What does that mean?’

Theo Heston was a bad man. Even his own son, Dylan Heston, thought so.

In the end, Dylan Heston didn’t stay the night.

After he said that, the room was filled with silence. Dylan Heston sat beside her quietly for a long time before finally speaking. “I’m not engaged to any woman!”

She froze for a moment. Then, the man stood up. “Get a good night’s sleep tonight.”

He leaned down, his palm stroking her forehead, and kissed it. “Good night!”

Her heart instantly started racing again. He had too much of an effect on her.

Dylan Heston left, but his scent lingered in the room, especially on her. It felt like she was completely enveloped in his smell.

With no desire to sleep, she called Riley Caldwell over.

“Nancy, what did you call me over for?”

Nancy Hughes’s face was cold as she SLAMMED the door shut. “Come clean with me. When did you get in touch with Dylan Heston?”

“Him? What about him?” Riley Caldwell scratched his head, looking completely lost. “Nancy, didn’t you…”

“Don’t play dumb with me. If you don’t talk, I’m going back right now!” She turned to pack her bags but was stopped by Riley Caldwell. “Don’t, Nancy! We finally came out here to relax, don’t be mad!”

What Riley Caldwell feared most was Nancy Hughes’s anger. “Nancy, I…”

“Don’t think I don’t know. You’re a student, where did you get the money for a trip like this, staying in such a nice hotel?” ‘No wonder it felt so strange.’

Usually, when a couple goes on a trip, they want to be alone. Why would they insist on bringing along a third wheel?

Riley Caldwell’s face fell. ‘I’m about to sell Dylan out,’ he thought. “Nancy, to be honest, Dylan is pretty pitiful!”

On one hand was his sister, and on the other was his future brother-in-law. All things considered, siding with his sister seemed like the more reliable choice.

He told Nancy Hughes everything. “Nancy, Dylan really likes you. What happened back then was a misunderstanding. Look, he didn’t end up marrying someone else, so why don’t you give yourselves a chance?”

Over the past year, he could see that Nancy Hughes wasn’t happy. Or rather, her happiness was fleeting and superficial.

She numbed herself with a busy work life every day, like a walking corpse, devoid of all emotion.

“There are some things you don’t understand. Don’t do this again.”

She scolded Riley Caldwell, but she didn’t know what else to say. He was only doing it for her own good.

Even if Dylan Heston and Rose Everett weren’t engaged, the matter of Zane Lennox alone was enough to make her feel guilty for a lifetime.

In the past, Dylan Heston had been a cold, slow-to-warm-up man to Nancy Hughes, someone who kept everything bottled up inside. His current transformation was a bit too much for her to accept.

Because of Dylan Heston’s sudden confession, she suffered from insomnia until the early morning. Just as she had finally managed to fall asleep, she heard a noise at the door.

The curtains were suddenly pulled open, and the glaring sunlight shone directly on her. She opened her eyes to see a tall man standing in front of the window.

For a split second, she thought she was dreaming. Otherwise, how could Dylan Heston be in her room?

Very quickly, she realized it wasn’t a dream. On the contrary, it was all too real.

Because Dylan Heston walked over quickly and yanked the blanket off her. “Still not awake?”

A chill washed over her skin, shocking her fully awake. She shot up in bed.

She frantically grabbed the blanket from his hands and clutched it to her body. “How did you get into my room!”

She glanced at the closed door, then at the man standing right in front of her, and hugged herself tighter.

She always slept in light clothing. ‘That bastard must have seen everything just now.’

“Nothing to hide. I’ve already seen everything worth seeing!” Dylan Heston said, fiddling with a strand of her hair as his gaze swept down to her chest. “I’ve discovered that after a year away, this area has gotten a lot smaller!”

Following his gaze, she looked down at her own chest, bit her lip, and cursed under her breath. Then she immediately lifted her head to glare at him. “None of your business!”

‘So what if my chest got smaller! Is that my fault!’

‘She’d never met such a hooligan.’ She grabbed her clothes and rushed into the bathroom. Inside, she thoroughly cursed him and all his ancestors before slowly emerging.

Dylan Heston was sitting on the sofa, looking at a phone. She crossed her arms. “How did you get in here!”

Backlit by the sun, his face was a little hard to see, but his expression didn’t seem pleasant.

“Who is this man?” Dylan Heston suddenly held up the phone to face her.

She walked closer and realized the phone Dylan Heston was holding was hers.

She didn’t have much to hide, so she never bothered to change her phone password, assuming he even remembered it.

Apparently, since he was now able to read her text messages, he remembered it very clearly.

She darted over, trying to snatch the phone from his hand. “Looking at someone’s phone without their permission is an invasion of privacy!”

Unfortunately, she was a step too late. Dylan Heston pulled the phone back first. Seeing her nervous state, he forcefully pulled her into his embrace. “I told the manager here that I’m your husband, and they gave me a key card!”

“What?” She blinked in confusion. Dylan Heston continued, “Now it’s your turn to answer my question!”

“Who is this man?” The screen of the phone Dylan Heston was holding showed a text message that Zachary Stone had sent her earlier.

For some reason, she felt an inexplicable sense of guilt. “He’s my friend!”

“And a client?”

“Huh?” Nancy Hughes looked at him, confused. ‘What client?’

“At the company dinner, didn’t you say you were meeting a client? I saw this man sitting across from you, didn’t I?”

If Dylan Heston hadn’t brought it up, she would have almost forgotten about the lie she had told.

“Do clients need to hold hands? It seems this client of yours is quite special!”

He slid his hand down her wrist, his fingers entwining with hers, kneading her palm neither lightly nor heavily.

‘He must have seen everything that night, or he wouldn’t be saying this.’

In truth, she had been just as stunned when Zachary Stone touched her hand.

“Zachary Stone is my boyfriend!” she blurted out. ‘Might as well, at this point.’

“Boyfriend?” Dylan Heston raised an eyebrow. She felt his grip on her hand tighten. “Then how about I give your ‘boyfriend’ a call right now?”
