Secret Marriage: The CEO's Pampered Wife
Chapter 454: Grand Finale (Part 2)
Nancy Hughes broke out in a sweat. “So you just told him everything?”
“Yeah, you should have seen the look in his eyes. It nearly scared me to death!” the female colleague answered definitively. “No, wait, don’t change the subject. Do you really know this new shareholder?”
“Alright, alright. You… I’m speechless!” She had nothing more to say.
She reached up and touched her forehead. It felt like she really was running a fever; her forehead was burning up.
Nancy Hughes was actually fine. After a little while, she couldn’t stand being cooped up in the room any longer. She wanted to go out and see how Dylan Heston was doing, to see what he was up to.
She pushed the door open, poked her head through the crack, and saw Dylan Heston cooking in the kitchen.
She walked over. “What are you making?”
She hadn’t eaten anything since waking up, and she was starving.
Dylan Heston turned his head. “Can’t sleep?”
She nodded. Dylan said, “Just a little longer. I’m making you breakfast.”
When Dylan Heston emerged from the kitchen carrying a bowl, Nancy was struck by a sense of déja vu, feeling as if they had gone back to the way things were before.
She awkwardly picked up her chopsticks. “Thank you.”
“After you eat, take your temperature. I’ll watch you while you go back to sleep for a bit.”
“Oh.”
She silently ate the congee from the bowl. It was warm.
Unable to fall back asleep right away, she sat on the sofa watching television. The man sat down next to her.
They were sitting very close to each other. She subconsciously scooted over a little, putting some distance between them.
But in the next second, the man’s body leaned in even closer, and he wrapped his arm around her, pulling her into his embrace.
She started to struggle, but then she heard his voice by her ear. “Don’t move. I want to hold you.”
‘I just want to hold you quietly like this, with no one to disturb us.’
‘This was the life he wanted most, the life he felt would bring him the greatest happiness.’
For Nancy Hughes, wasn’t a life like this the very picture of what she hoped for most?
“Dylan, why do you like me?” She took the initiative and leaned her head against his shoulder.
She was trying to let her heart open up to Dylan Heston once more. It was undeniable that she still liked him.
Over the past year, whenever she thought she was over Dylan Heston, a voice would well up from the bottom of her heart.
Her heart would start racing, THUMP-THUMP-THUMP, and then her mind would be flooded with thoughts of Dylan Heston, impossible to forget.
“There are no reasons for loving someone, only for hating them!”
“Then why did you get engaged to Rose Everett back then? She even came to find me…”
“That was just part of the plan. Only by making him believe it did you have a chance of survival, right?” Otherwise, how could Nancy Hughes possibly be here, alive and well, in front of him now?
Nancy Hughes was a little confused. ‘What plan? And who is this ‘he’ he’s talking about?’
“What exactly happened back then? What do you mean, ‘my chance of survival’?”
“If I hadn’t given in to my father, I’m afraid you would have died long ago, just like Zane Lennox. My father wasn’t a kind man. Killing without batting an eye was something he was absolutely capable of.”
“Me and Zane Lennox? Then did your father really kill Zane?”
“No, but he’s not entirely blameless either,” Dylan Heston said grimly. “However, not long after I got engaged to Rose Everett, he died!”
Theo Heston had known for a long time that he was sick and didn’t have long to live. He used Nancy Hughes’s life to threaten Dylan Heston into submission.
Theo Heston was an absolute control freak. He wanted everything to proceed according to his designs, both before and after his death.
‘Pretended obedience isn’t true obedience.’
Nancy Hughes didn’t know what to say. Theo Heston was such a terrible person. He was the one who got Zane Lennox killed, which was why she had been wracked with guilt over Zane for the past year.
Theo Heston was dead. No wonder Dylan had said he got the retribution he deserved.
“What about you? Are you sad?” she asked.
‘He’d already lost his mother, and now his father was gone too. He was all alone. He must feel so lonely. The only family he had left was gone.’
Dylan Heston turned, lifted Nancy Hughes, and settled her onto his lap. He gazed at her affectionately. “Nancy, you know, this is why I love you.”
Perhaps everyone else loathed Theo Heston, seeing him as an evil man capable of anything, thinking he should have died long ago.
But they all forgot that besides being the man they both feared and hated, Theo Heston was also his father. The bonds of blood are unbreakable.
It was a fact he couldn’t change, even if he didn’t want to admit it.
Nancy Hughes was the first person to soothe his soul on such a deep level. That was probably why he loved her.
Nancy Hughes froze for a second, baffled and a little shy at his sudden confession.
Dylan Heston avoided talking about Theo Heston, not out of resentment, but because he had loved his father too deeply.
In every child’s heart, there exists a towering hero who protects them from everything.
He was both disappointed in Theo Heston and unable to let go of his other feelings for him.
Nancy Hughes saw the pain in his expression and reached out to hug his shoulders. “Everything will pass.”
“Nancy, do you hate me?”
‘Hate him? She had never hated him, not from beginning to end.’
She was just filled with guilt for Zane Lennox, and that was why she couldn’t be with Dylan. She was afraid she would dream of Zane every night, that he would come and demand to know why she was with Dylan Heston.
‘Now that Theo Heston is dead, he probably won’t come after me anymore, right?’
She felt a little happy, but at the same time, she felt sad for Dylan.
Perhaps she was just really tired. Halfway through the movie, she grew drowsy and fell into a deep sleep, her head resting on Dylan Heston’s shoulder.
When she woke up, she saw the man sleeping beside her. For a moment, it felt like old times again.
Dylan Heston was decidedly handsome, with sharp features and an intense gaze, but his perpetually cold demeanor made him seem older than he was.
She reached out, unable to resist touching his cheek.
Dylan Heston wasn’t asleep. He knew the moment she moved and quickly grabbed her hand. “That tickles!”
His eyes snapped open, sharp and fixed on her. Nancy Hughes looked back at him, and they stared at each other in silence.
After a long moment, Nancy Hughes unnaturally tried to pull her hand back, but he squeezed it even tighter. “Nancy, I love you!”
A year of distance had only made their feelings for each other grow stronger.
Nancy Hughes was just about to say “I love you too,” when the man suddenly added, “Tomorrow, go and make things clear with that Zachary Stone!”
“Huh?” ‘His mood changes so fast!’
