Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep

Chapter 286 - 279: Her Promise

  • Next Chapter

"Aunt Cai, please don’t cry. Your eyes can’t take it." Jiang Li helped her sit down on a nearby chair.

Wu Ming brought a hot towel and handed it to her. "Aunt Cai, please wipe your face. Uncle Dong will be sad if he sees you like this."

Hearing this, Cai He obediently took the towel from her and wiped her face.

Jiang Li looked at Chang Siqi, who was standing to the side. "You weren’t injured, were you?"

Chang Siqi thought about the few blows she’d taken. "I’m fine. Just some minor injuries."

To her, superficial wounds were practically negligible.

Chang Siqi lowered her gaze, her mind drifting to things from her past.

Seeing this, Jiang Li didn’t press further. She got up to ask the hospital staff about Uncle Dong’s surgery and hospitalization fees.

After paying the fees, she returned with the receipt. Uncle Dong had already been moved to a general ward.

Cai He was leaning against the window of the room, watching Dong Yong, who was still under observation. She periodically lowered her head to wipe away her tears.

She remembered what Jiang Li and the others had said, and the state of her own eyes, and managed to hold back her tears.

Jiang Li looked at Cai He. "Aunt Cai, should we have your eyes looked at as well?"

Cai He turned around in a panic, waving her hands dismissively. "No, there’s no need! You’ve already helped us so much."

Cai He felt a pang of embarrassment. ’They saved my husband’s life and paid for all his medical and hospital bills.’

She was already incredibly grateful. As for her eyes... so many years had passed. ’I’ll be in the ground in a few years anyway, no point in making a fuss now.’

"Aunt Cai, it wasn’t my money. It’s a charitable foundation run by the Huang Family. They’ll help. Let’s just get you examined first to see what’s going on."

Cai He listened to Jiang Li, tilting her head slightly. "Charitable foundations... aren’t... aren’t they all scams?"

Her husband had tried looking for help before, but no one ever responded. And those apps... entering their information was like dropping a stone into the ocean. Utterly useless.

"Aunt Cai, I wouldn’t lie to you."

It was the promise she could make.

As Cai He listened to Jiang Li, her mind was a whirlwind of conflict. ’It’s been so many years... it’s probably untreatable by now.’

"Alright."

Jiang Li nodded, turned to register her, and took Aunt Cai for an examination.

Cai He was extremely nervous the entire time. When the accident happened all those years ago, the authorities had given them some compensation money. But she’d spent it all not long after. She told Dong Yong she didn’t want treatment, and while he wanted to help, he was powerless to do so. After that, by unspoken agreement, they never brought it up again.

When Cai He came out of the examination room, she was in a complete daze.

The doctor had said there was a chance it could be cured, but he recommended they go to a hospital in a big city where the medical equipment was more comprehensive and reliable.

’It can be cured?’

For a moment, Cai He couldn’t describe how she felt.

"Am I dreaming?"

Cai He stared blankly up at Jiang Li. ’Why is it that after meeting her, everything seems to be getting better?’

A faint smile touched Jiang Li’s lips. "Aunt Cai, this is good news. Once Uncle Dong wakes up, I’ll take you both to C City. I’m quite familiar with the hospital there."

’After all, I’m practically a regular there.’

"But..."

"Aunt Cai, don’t worry. It’s free treatment, so it would be a waste not to take it. Besides, you won’t have to spend a dime. Don’t you agree?"

Cai He listened to Jiang Li, unsure of what to say. ’We’ll never be able to repay this.’

"Aunt Cai, you just have to say you’re willing to go through with it. I’ll take care of everything."

Jiang Li looked at Cai He. ’If she isn’t willing, then that’s that.’

Just then, Wu Ming came out to find them. "Uncle Dong is awake."

Cai He staggered forward, and Jiang Li moved to support her.

"Old man, you’re finally awake! You scared me to death."

Dong Yong stared at the ceiling, his mind struggling to catch up. ’Didn’t I die?’

Hearing Cai He’s hoarse voice, he turned his head. His wife was walking in, supported by the young woman.

"COUGH, COUGH. I’m alright, He." ’At least I’m still alive.’

Cai He sat down in the chair beside him and, with Jiang Li’s help, took his hand.

"Oh, right. Old man, this is Jiang Li. She’s the one who saved you. She caught those three men, too. She’s a good person."

As Cai He finished, her voice grew softer, as if she’d finally found her anchor. "She also said she’ll take me to get my eyes treated."

Dong Yong followed Cai He’s gaze to Jiang Li. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

"COUGH, COUGH. But... we don’t have any money." ’Otherwise, He wouldn’t have been blind for so long.’

"Money isn’t an issue. The doctor said her condition is treatable, but he recommends going to a larger hospital. If you’re willing..."

Dong Yong instantly grabbed Cai He’s hand, his voice filled with emotion. "We’re willing! We’re willing!"

"Uncle Dong, you focus on recovering for now. After the trial, we’ll all go to C City."

"Those three were really caught?" Thinking of the men from that night, Dong Yong seethed with a hatred that made his teeth ache. He had watched with his own eyes as the fire started in the distance, growing from a tiny flame into a raging inferno.

But he’d been too slow. By the time he broke free, the fire was already huge. He had intended to warn the villagers, but he lost his footing and tumbled down the slope. After that, he remembered nothing.

"Yes. We’ll need you to appear in court as a witness."

"Alright. I’ll definitely be there!"

Jiang Li nodded and led Wu Ming out, leaving the couple alone.

Jiang Li sat down on a nearby bench and took out her phone to contact the director of the foundation.

"Yeah, who’s this?"

The flippant voice on the other end made Jiang Li frown slightly. "Jiang Li."

"Jiang— COUGH, COUGH, COUGH—Jiang... Little President Jiang! What could I do for you?" Upon hearing Jiang Li’s name, the director immediately sat up straight, his tone turning serious.

"How are the Bai Yulan sisters doing?"

As soon as Jiang Li spoke, she heard the sound of rustling papers from the other end. "Little President Jiang, rest assured, their treatment is proceeding smoothly. They’re in the rehabilitation phase now and just need to recover slowly."

"Okay. Send me the address. I’ll be stopping by in a few days."

"Yes, of course, of course."

Jiang Li hung up. She had been delayed last time and never got a chance to visit them. This time, it would be on her way.

Jiang Li did a quick search online. Besides the portion contributed by Huang Nianci, her own dividends were also funneled into the foundation, and she would occasionally deposit extra funds into it herself.

Supporting a foundation wasn’t difficult for her. She had also heard that, over time, several anonymous accounts had made deposits as well.

Wu Ming glanced over at her. "Jiang Li, your foundation’s reputation is getting pretty big. Aren’t you afraid someone might..."

Jiang Li’s eyes flickered. "Then we’ll see if they live long enough to spend it."

Jiang Li immediately thought of what Cai He had said about charities being scams. It was just the work of parasites.

After Xu Chengfu finished dealing with Hu Zheng and the others, he handed the remaining work off to his subordinates and hurried to the hospital.

"Miss Jiang, I came to check on Uncle Dong." The memory of the interrogation room brought a feeling of immense satisfaction to Xu Chengfu.

’That felt so good! In all his years, he’d never felt such a rush as when he slammed them with the evidence.’

Jiang Li nodded. Xu Chengfu led a few people inside to offer his sympathies to Dong Yong and take his official statement. It matched what Jiang Li had told him exactly. ’It’s uncanny!’

Jiang Li glanced at Wu Ming beside her. "Are you sure it’s okay that you sent Hu Zheng and his men to dig up Li Lingzhou’s grave?"
