Shattered Fate

82~ Overwhelming Regret

  • Next Chapter

Evelyn had been fighting the mindless ones under Kyle's control. But after his death, they had all lost consciousness, leaving her alone on the battlefield.

She stopped for a while to catch her breath and recover her strength. During her rest, she began considering whether she could take advantage of any moment of weakness Wail or Vale might show, and attempt to kill one or both of them.

But suddenly, she sensed a terrifying presence behind her.

She turned around in fear and found Bahaa standing there.

"B-Bahaa?! Aren't you dead?!"

He looked at her with a smile.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed? You wouldn't be able to kill them even if they were unconscious."

Evelyn was confused by his words.

"What do you mean?"

Bahaa narrowed his eyes slightly.

"Why do you wanna die , when you could forget what happened and return to your former life?"

Evelyn's expression suddenly changed, anger spreading across her face.

"Return to my former life?! Go back to thinking about revenge when I might never get another chance to achieve it?!"

Bahaa answered calmly,

"You'll never get your revenge... You're playing a losing game, targeting the wrong person. And either way, you cannot win."

His words struck a sensitive nerve, but he didn't stop there.

"Let's make a deal. Honestly, I'm not sure whether Wail will kill you afterward or not... But I can guarantee that you'll return to your planet safely."

Evelyn looked at him suspiciously.

"What is it?"

"We'll win this battle... and afterward, I want everyone to forget about me."

He then looked beyond the castle and continued,

"I want you to touch everyone on the battlefield and erase their memories of me. As for those who aren't here, I've already left traces of my dark energy inside them. I'll open dark portals through those traces. They won't be able to sense them, and you'll be able to reach them through the portals and do the same."

Evelyn looked at him with displeasure as Bahaa finished.

"Trust me."

---

"What are you doing?!"

Wail turned around quickly and threw a strike toward Evelyn, but she stepped back with a tense smile.

"You'll never know what I've done..."

Wail reached out to grab her, but a dark portal appeared behind her and swallowed her before closing.

Wail remained where he was, stunned by what had happened. Then he felt an unpleasant pain in his head.

Amin asked,

The page the author publishes on supplied this copy without permission; the author's official chapter is where readers support them.

"What's wrong with her? She touched me too..."

Wail's eyes widened as he realized what had happened.

Evelyn had tampered with their memories, but he had no idea exactly what she had done.

At that moment, Wail turned around after sensing that someone who had been with them had disappeared.

"I don't know what she did... Damn it, I wanted something from her, but she escaped."

He then returned with Amin to the previous battlefield.

---

When the two arrived, they found Raouf awake, though barely able to move, with Elyes beside him.

Elyes told them,

"Mark and Adam are over there... Their condition is serious."

The two approached them and tried to transfer some of their energy to help them recover. This improved their condition slightly, but it wasn't enough to pull them out of danger.

Later, Sif arrived with Zaki. Together, they managed to heal the two and bring them out of critical condition.

---

Adam gradually regained consciousness. He struggled to sit up and found himself in a hospital room, his body covered in bandages.

He looked around, then froze when he realized that his right arm and left leg were missing.

Memories of Vale's attack came rushing back, and he finally understood what had happened.

He lay back down, pressing his lips together in anger and sorrow.

"Damn it... How am I supposed to fight again?"

A voice came from the doorway.

"Don't think about that right now..."

Adam turned and saw Mark standing there. He entered the room and sat beside him.

Adam spoke, his voice heavy with frustration.

"I've spent my entire life training... only to lose my ability to fight?"

Mark replied,

"And who decided that? Are you planning to give up just because you lost an arm and a foot? I mean, things might become harder, but that doesn't make them impossible. You just need to have the same determination as him."

Adam's eyes widened when he saw Amin entering the room.

Amin said,

"Even after losing my sight, I found my own way and kept fighting until the end... You need to find your own way too."

Adam smiled sadly.

"You're right... But I'll need some time to come to terms with it."

Mark lightly punched his chest.

"Take all the time you need!"

The two laughed, while Amin looked rather uncomfortable. He wasn't used to moments like these.

Then Adam asked,

"By the way... Where's Noah?"

Mark and Amin suddenly fell silent.

They exchanged a quiet glance, but neither could bring himself to answer.

---

Back on the battlefield...

After Sif and Zaki had taken the remaining injured fighters away, Wail and Elyes returned to bury Vale's burned body.

Wail looked down at him and spoke quietly.

"He wasn't wrong... When I look at his goal from a certain perspective, I can understand why he thought that way."

Elyes asked,

"Did he tell you about his goal before he died?"

Wail nodded.

Elyes then said,

"Whatever his goal was, his methods were definitely wrong."

Wail accepted his words.

"You're right... Despite his immense strength, Vale had encountered fighters who were far more powerful than him. He accepted his own weakness in comparison and believed the only solution was to keep them away from us rather than fight them."

Wail clenched his fists as Elyes watched him with a smile.

"But he failed to realize that all he needed to do was become stronger himself."

Wail then noticed that the Void Element Sphere Vale had possessed had disappeared. He didn't know what had happened to it, so he turned toward Elyes.

"But we can't afford to let our guard down... In a few days, let's begin searching for every source of energy on this planet, whether other energy users or Elemental Spheres."

"Yes. We will."

Wail looked toward Excalibur, prompting Elyes to ask,

"What should we do with it?"

Wail replied,

"We can't even touch it... Let's leave it here for now and decide what to do with it later."

Wail prepared to leave, but Elyes called out to him.

"Wail... I've ran out of all my energy. I can't make it home."

Wail exhaled in annoyance, then returned and grabbed him by the shoulder before flying away with him.

---

Later...

The two arrived at Elyes's house.

Wail set him down and was about to leave when Elyes stopped him. He then called out to Amira from outside.

Wail looked at him with irritation.

"Is this why you brought me here?"

Elyes smiled and replied,

"I promised her you'd come back and talk to her once everything was over."

"That's your problem, not..."

Wail didn't get to finish. The door opened, and Amira stepped outside, surprised to see the two of them.

She approached them, and Elyes said to Wail,

"Talk to her first... Then you and I will have a our chat, just the two of us."

He walked away, leaving them alone.

Wail and Amira stood facing each other in silence until Amira finally broke it.

"So... You won."

Wail tried to hide his cold expression, but couldn't.

"Yes... It's all over."

Amira noticed his sadness before asking with concern,

"Really? You don't look happy about it... Is everything okay?"

Wail hesitated for a moment before answering coldly,

"Everything okay? Is that the best thing you could come up with to ask me after all this time? You really don't understand anything..."

Amira looked confused.

"What ... do you mean?"

Wail continued, pain beginning to show beneath his cold tone.

"I've lost my mentor... the girl I was falling in love with... my friends... and even my mother! I've lost myself while killing those around me, enemies and innocent people alike!"

Amira stepped back slightly as Wail's voice grew louder.

"I killed the girl I loved... I just killed my own brother, and I have no family left! And here you are, asking me if everything is okay?! What kind of stupid question is that?!"

Amira replied anxiously,

"I-I only wanted to help..."

Wail immediately cut her off.

"Asking stupid questions isn't helping! It's not as though you don't know what happened... I've already told you everything, yet you keep pretending to care and asking pointless questions when you already know the answers!"

His gaze was filled with all the anger and hatred he had carried for so long. He couldn't stop himself from letting everything he had kept inside finally spill out.

But his tone suddenly changed. His voice grew quieter, and sadness replaced his anger.

"You were the one who changed me... You gave me the hope and courage that allowed me to forget the past and move on with my life."

He fell silent for a moment, then continued,

"I've been living through hell for the past three years... I wanted to talk to you after my mother died, but you wanted to put it off, even though we hadn't seen each other in so long... You ignored me, just as you did after our first battle against dark..."

Wail suddenly stopped.

After a few moments, he lowered his hand and said,

"Forget it... I don't think talking to you will do any good anymore, anyway."

He turned around and began walking away.

But then he suddenly stopped.

Amira was crying, tears coming down her face.

She spoke in a broken voice.

"I'm... sorry."

Wail looked at her sadly, then replied,

"It's not your fault... Never blame yourself, Amira."

He left, while Amira remained where she was, watching his back with overwhelming regret.
