She Came to Heal, Stayed to Conquer
Chapter 345: Caused a Flood Disaster (Part 3)
The old woman’s cloudy eyes blinked: “Dear, the flood washed away all our food, my grandson has been hungry for two days…”
She pointed not far away, where a sallow, emaciated boy clung to a tree trunk, his lower body submerged in water, shivering with cold.
Han Lei’s nose tingled. She took her own cloak from the carriage and wrapped it around the child, who recoiled in fear.
“Don’t be afraid,” Han Lei said softly, pulling a steamed bun from the space and handing it to him, “Eat up.”
The child was obviously starving. At the sight of the bun in Han Lei’s hand, he didn’t even bother to reach out and directly bit into it with his mouth. Hot steam swirled in front of his dirty little face, making his eyes appear even brighter.
“Eat slowly, eat slowly. Don’t choke.” Han Lei said softly.
The old woman saw that the child had food and wiped her tears, thanking Han Lei repeatedly.
Han Lei handed the child wrapped in the cloak back to the old woman and took out another bun for her.
Seeing the old woman and child eating buns, more disaster victims gathered around.
A lame man came before Han Lei and suddenly knelt down: “Good lady, help us out! A bite to eat, please, my old mother has been soaking in cold water and is dying!”
His kneeling triggered a wave of kneeling around him, cries for help rang one after another.
Seeing this, Han Lei’s heart could not bear it, and she anxiously said, “Dai Yi, guard the carriage, I’ll share some food with them.”
“Yes!”
Dai Yi responded loudly. He knew what Han Lei wanted to do and thus stood guard by the carriage curtain.
Han Lei got on the carriage, careful not to draw too much attention. She bought a large quantity of baked flatbreads and buns from the system.
Fortunately, these disaster victims were just local residents, several dozen families, not too many people in total.
Han Lei had Dai Si gather water-filled floating basins, distributing them household by household, one basin per family, advising them to hold on until the government issued relief porridge.
Han Lei handed out from the carriage, while Dai Yi and others, stationed at the carriage door, distributed outside. It took about an hour to finish distributing to the dozens of families here.
Amidst the grateful thanks of the disaster victims, the carriage continued moving along the muddy official road.
The road became particularly difficult after the torrential rain, the wheels occasionally sinking into the mud, producing a teeth-chattering creak.
On the hills beside the road, traces of fresh landslides were shocking, thick trees were uprooted, and lay messily across the road.
On the most serious section of the road, turbid slurry mixed with rubble had completely blocked the official road.
“Whoa!”
Dai Si tightened the reins, and the carriage shook violently.
Han Lei lifted the curtain and saw the road ahead completely blocked by a landslide, with slurry interspersed with broken branches and stones.
“Miss, we can’t pass.” Dai Yi wiped the sweat off his forehead, his boots already half-sunken in the mud.
Han Lei looked around, under the scorching sun, the humid air made it hard to breathe.
There was no village ahead, and no shops behind.
Decisively, Han Lei said, “I’ll get some tools; we have to clear a path.”
After changing into light sportswear in the carriage, Han Lei and Dai Yi and the others began clearing the road.
It was already near noon, the sun after the rain especially scorching, baking the earth, the air humid and hot.
The sound of shovels clashing with stones rang out continuously, and their shirts were soon soaked with sweat.
Only until the sun began to set in the west did they finally manage to clear a path passable by the carriage.
Han Lei slumped down onto a stone at the roadside, her sportswear’s back completely soaked, sticking clammily to her body.
“Miss, have some water.” Dai Si was also panting heavily.
Han Lei took out a few bottles of mineral water from the space and handed them out, noticing that her hand was trembling uncontrollably.
Everyone found some shade under a tree to rest, eating boxed meals while waiting for the beggar squad behind them.
It was not until early afternoon that figures staggered into view from afar. The ragged beggars walked extremely slowly, some old people almost supported by the younger ones to move.
Han Lei took out a few square tables from the space from the last time they played mahjong and bought over a thousand hot boxed meals. The white buns stacked like a small hill, the enticing aroma spreading immediately.
Along the way, not only beggars from the Capital City, but also many disaster victims who lost their homes in this torrential rain joined in.
So, Han Lei prepared plenty of food.
Smelling the aroma of food, the beggars quickened their pace.
“Everyone, form a line!” Dai Yi maintained order with an electric baton, “There’s a share for everyone!”
To speed up the distribution, Han Lei initially only had Dai Yi and Dai Er maintain order. Dai San and Dai Si helped her distribute the food.
However, Han Lei underestimated the desperation of the disaster victims and beggars for food.
Several younger beggars suddenly pushed the elderly aside, rushing forward through the muddy water.
“Food! Where’s the food!” a young beggar with a face full of dirt shouted madly.
“Finally, there’s food,”
“Hurry, faster,”
The beggars began to push and shove wildly, creating instant chaos.
Han Lei hastily picked up a megaphone: “Queue up! Everyone queue up!”
Yet her voice was completely drowned in the noise. She shouted herself hoarse, seemingly unable to control the situation.
