Chapter 1806 - 1883: Call Me Cousin-Sister

"...We really need to hurry up and get the wedding ready." Mr. Chen, Mr. Chen—did the plan the three of them cooked up actually succeed? Did they really manage to get their daughter to sleep with that nationally beloved perfect son-in-law she’d been eyeing for ages? Hehehe... Just picturing that scene made her laugh uncontrollably.

Looking at Su Huai’an, who had that completely willing, almost savoring expression on his face, swept away the gloom in her heart even more.

"You’re not alone anymore, so you can’t do any of the things you used to do. It’s for your own good—if anything happens, in the end it’s still your own body that pays the price." Su Huai’an was nodding as he spoke, patiently lecturing Chen Huaying.

"I’m not that delicate. I, a dignified..." The last part of the sentence was swallowed back down under Su Huai’an’s icy gaze.

"I’m sorry, Professor Su, I was wrong." Chen Huaying put on the look of an obedient student and apologized meekly, though she put extra weight on the word "Professor."

"I’ll deal with you when we get home."

"No, no, no... I won’t dare again."

Sheng Ning had enjoyed the show enough and joked, "So from now on I should call you cousin-in-law?"

"Hahahaha..." Chen Huaying cocked her eyebrows smugly. She’d originally found pregnancy very annoying, had felt miserable about it, but now it suddenly seemed like a pretty good deal.

She said proudly, "What’s so great about you calling me cousin-in-law? The point is getting the Living Yama to call me cousin-in-law, hahahaha..." Just imagining that scene, she could brag about it at school for an entire semester. No, she could brag about it all the way to graduation.

Su Huai’an snorted a reminder: "Didn’t you run over here so fast because you had something to tell Ningning?"

"Oh, oh..." Chen Huaying came to her senses, slapped her forehead, and said, "Ningning, you don’t know yet, do you? The Living Yama’s old injury flared up and he’s in the hospital. I heard it’s really serious."

At those words, Sheng Ning felt as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over her head in the dead of winter. Her gaze turned sharp and faintly murderous as she looked toward the Feng Family servant at her side.

"I’m sorry, Family Head." The servant was so frightened he was about to kneel.

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

"Because you seemed to really dislike President Xu, so we didn’t dare disturb you with something like this."

That was fair; she really was sick of Xu Qigang. But the moment she heard his old injury had relapsed, her heart clenched painfully, and she wished she could slap herself. She hated her own uselessness, and hated her own hypocrisy.

"Forget the questions. I’ll take you to the hospital to see him."

"I’m not going." At the crucial moment, she still couldn’t swallow her pride.

"But I heard the Living Yama’s injury is bad—he might really be leaving the job. I heard Chairman Shen sent him in three nights ago, and he was completely unconscious, breathing out more than he was breathing in."

"Three days ago?" Sheng Ning instantly locked onto the key point.

Chen Huaying didn’t know the specifics, but Su Huai’an did. He explained, "Yeah, three days ago they found him in the bushes by the roadside near the General Union. I heard Shen Feihu mobilized people from a Rescue Association to search for him. By the time they finally found him, no one knew how long he’d already been lying unconscious in those bushes."

Sheng Ning’s body swayed and she almost lost her balance; luckily, Su Huai’an reacted quickly and steadied her.

"Fine, I’ll go see him." She sighed, still unable to control her own heart.

****

Su Huai’an had driven over, and he took the two of them straight to the Main Hospital. Sheng Ning had no idea how many times she’d been here already. As soon as she walked in, she saw that the hallway colors had changed from the old green-and-white combo to pure white. The freshly painted white walls looked strikingly bright.
