Chapter 772: Chapter 345: Reconnaissance Methods (Part 2)

A voice came through the headset; it was Xv Guangpeng.

Earlier, during the change of position, Group B, including Li Yanan, did not notice the target hiding on the rooftop immediately.

"Permission to fire!"

"Fire—! Hit one person!"

"Wait, another person is moving to the edge of the rooftop. They seem to know your exact position!"

Just as the team was moving halfway, Xv Guangpeng immediately shouted a warning.

Gu Ji was just about to move his gun for a quick shot.

Suddenly, two round, dark objects fell from above into his line of sight.

"Grenades! Run!!"

Gu Ji’s eyes widened, his body tensed like encountering a great enemy, shouted, and kicked one of the grenades away the moment it hit the ground, then grabbed Li Yaoguang at the back and dashed out like a wildcat.

"Boom!" "Boom!"

Just as he lunged out, a piercing sound sliced through the air, and in a flash, two grenades exploded successively, the shockwaves frantically reverberating in the narrow alley, while dust and debris cascaded from the walls amidst a cloud of thick smoke.

"Mr. Gu! Gao Bo! How are you?!"

"Move! Move!"

Gu Ji felt the sting on his cheek, stood up, shaking his head to clear it.

At this moment, his ears were filled with a sharp buzzing, and he could barely make out a few words from Yao Zhan. But, relying on his extensive life-and-death battle experience, he quickly rose, aiming with one hand at the rooftop for quick shots, while using the other hand to grab Li Yaoguang’s collar, dragging him out of the alley.

Li Yaoguang snapped back from his daze, realizing he was being pulled along.

Hurriedly, he also raised his gun to provide cover fire.

Once they escaped the alley, they instantly followed Gu Ji into the green area, seeking cover behind tree trunks.

"Li Yaoguang, are you alright?"

"I’m fine!"

"Everyone check ammo. Group B, we have safely made it through the alley to the landscaped path by the riverside, what is the rooftop situation?"

"Phew... Thank goodness."

Li Yaoguang quickly checked himself over, finding no external injuries, only feeling a searing sensation on his neck as though swept by a blast wave.

Upon receiving the update, Xv Guangpeng and the others also breathed a sigh of relief.

Then Li Yanan reported, "Only one sniper was killed; the other spotter escaped into a fire stairwell!"

Gao Bo spat on the ground, "Damn, these guys are ruthless, throwing two grenades just like that! Good thing they were attack grenades; if they’d been defensive fragment grenades, we’d be in big trouble."

Attack grenades are less powerful than defensive ones.

The reason for using the former is mainly when considering urban combat, where confined spaces can easily cause friendly fire, the same reason large-caliber rifles aren’t used.

But Gu Ji didn’t dwell on this; instead, he recalled Xv Guangpeng’s previous words.

With the rooftop sniper down, and no visibility, how did the other spotter accurately judge they would pass through the alley and throw two grenades consecutively?

"Could the issue be with that box-shaped equipment?"

Gu Ji quickly locked onto the information provided by Xv Guangpeng earlier.

This seemed the most likely possibility.

The electronic device could very well be a portable backpack intelligence reconnaissance system, resembling the one used by the intelligence team in the 10·16 capture operation, capable of scanning a certain range of radio signals and pinpointing their location.

No wonder when he aimed at the rooftop target, the other side reacted so quickly.

They likely detected five signal sources approaching them.

Truly worthy of an intelligence agency, with endless reconnaissance methods.

"Group B, prepare to regroup!"

"Received!"

Gu Ji called out to Li Yanan and the others, "click-clack" as he loaded a new magazine, standing to aim at the rooftop area.

Gao Bo thought he was preparing to counterattack, but after waiting a long while without an order to advance, he asked, "Gu Ji, aren’t we going up?"

"It’s not necessary for now, it would just be a waste of time. Once Group B arrives, we retreat!"

Though Gu Ji’s tone was icy, devoid of emotion, his eyes were filled with a growing intent to kill.

Half a minute later, Li Yanan and the others came around from the rear, "I saw some figures retreating from the district, but temporarily can’t confirm which faction they belong to."

"Alright, full speed ahead!"

Gu Ji didn’t linger any further and instead directed the team to sprint south along the green belt.

They found themselves in a large green area, with district buildings on their left and the riverside scenic road on their right.

Currently, the main conflict zones are in the building district on their left, so without interference, their movement was swift, reaching near the scene within a few breaths.

Gao Bo could even clearly hear the crackling of gunfire to the right.

Five minutes later, they circumvented along the green belt to the southeastern area, which was also the rear of the conflict zone.

Gu Ji looked towards the riverside and, as expected, saw two speed boats docked nearby.

At this moment, the lead scout, posing as a decoy, suddenly showed a stance of alertness, stopping in place.

Everyone halted, and after a careful search, Gao Bo finally spotted three mercenary sentries hidden in the green forest.

Gu Ji waved his arm, signaling for concealment, and then separately gave shooting orders to Li Yanan and Ling Yousong, while raising his own gun to aim.

"Thud, thud, thud," three gunshots rang out.

All three mercenaries dropped dead instantly.

"Quickly! Stay alert!"

Gu Ji tossed out a command, swiftly moving to the bodies, slung the enemy’s M4 rifle over his shoulder, and searched for ammo.

The AR series rifle magazines are mostly interchangeable, one of the modular weapon’s advantages, as his HK416 seamlessly exchanged magazines with the PM mercenaries’ M4 rifles.

Finally, he picked up the radio and headset from the corpse’s chest, placing it beside his left ear.

"Forget about the right side for now, focus entirely on the targets on the left!"

"Cohen! The police helicopter is coming!"

Gu Ji held his breath.

Such a cold, familiar voice.

It was Cohen, no doubt!

Upon hearing the second sentence, he instinctively looked up, but the sky was devoid of any helicopter.

Thinking it a mistake, Gu Ji didn’t anticipate Cohen suddenly confronting him.

"Pelta, how’s the boat preparation going? Pelta? Damn it, there might be an issue by the river, everyone switch channels immediately!"

Such keen counter-reconnaissance ability. ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Gu Ji squinted his eyes, smirking coldly, discarding the walkie-talkie, "The PM mercenaries have already discovered the riverside being attacked, move out!"

"So soon?"

Gao Bo’s eyelid twitched, finally hanging a dangling cylindrical grenade on his belt, readying his gun.

They still didn’t know it was the PM mercenaries attacking the Defense Department Research Institute, but based on this, it was enough to prove these people were extraordinary.

Gu Ji led everyone into the district, originally intending to enter earlier, find a narrow path, set up a booby trap to ambush the enemy.

But now it was too late.

"Group B, head to the white building on my left, secure the vantage point!"

"Yes!"

Amazingly enough, as Li Yanan and the others charged inside, a few bullets instantly landed next to the advancing Gao Bo and Zhou Yu.

"Enemy attack!"

"Find cover immediately! Prepare to engage!"

Gu Ji shouted loudly, immediately taking cover behind a protruding load-bearing column by the street wall, peeking out to fire a few shots.

Because the cover space behind the column was inadequate for providing safe firing support, the exposed body area when shooting accurately from cover was too large, making it easy to be targeted.

Upon hearing gunfire,

Li Yanan and the others couldn’t make it to the rooftop, instead, they peered out from a second-floor window at one of the mercenaries hiding behind a utility pole.

With the first volley, the target fell instantly.

Having eliminated a source of suppressive fire, Gu Ji immediately seized the opportunity to switch cover.

At the same time, from the enemy’s flowerbed location, a cylindrical grenade was thrown, hitting the ground, "wham," instantly exploding into a large mass of white foam!
