Skill Trees Are Everywhere
Chapter 137: That Business of Digging Up the Ancestral Grave
Chapter 137: Chapter 137: That Business of Digging Up the Ancestral Grave
With the notes in his hand, Su Han had a crystal-clear understanding of his ancestor’s exploits as an undercover agent in the Seven Great Sects.
He wouldn’t even need to ask his ancestor another question to successfully forge... ’Pah! What am I saying, "forge"?’
This was his real identity—the ancestor’s nth-generation descendant.
With the notes and seven Tokens, he could easily run circles around the Seven Great Sects.
Each of the Seven Great Sects possessed a legacy stretching back hundreds of thousands of years. With such an immense history, God only knew how many legacies they held for his Skill Tree.
And after clearing these seven "dungeons," their rich legacies would all be his for the taking.
He even wondered if his Divine Sea might reach Perfection after he absorbed half of what the Seven Great Sects had to offer.
With that in mind, Su Han didn’t press his ancestor about the Seven Great Sects. Instead, he grew curious about his ancestor’s personal life.
What about that grand-ancestress, the one who had mobilized the entire Assassin’s Alliance to come after him, just to lure out some entity who was supposedly faking their death? What was her connection to his ancestor?
The moment he heard Su Han’s question, the ancestor’s expression changed, revealing a hint of panic.
"Grand... Grand-ancestress? She crawled out again?"
Su Han: "..."
’That’s... a bit rich, coming from you!’
’So it’s okay for you to lie in a coffin and pretend to be dead, but she can’t crawl out of her grave and come back to life?’
"Ahem... Unless there’s a second grand-ancestress, the one trying to have me assassinated should be the one you’re referring to."
The ancestor: "..."
After glancing at Su Han, the ancestor suddenly clutched his chest.
"Oh dear! This is bad... I feel a heart attack coming on!"
Su Han: "..."
Su Han was left speechless by his ancestor’s ham-fisted acting.
"Ancestor, we’re family here... Can we have fewer theatrics and more sincerity?
"Besides, you’ve been dead for over a thousand years. How could you possibly have a heart attack?"
The ancestor glared at Su Han. "You think I’m faking it?"
Su Han curled his lip. "Aren’t you?"
The ancestor rolled his eyes. "I was scared stiff."
Su Han: "..."
’Even if you did do something to wrong her...’
The thought had just formed when Su Han noticed his ancestor’s face had indeed turned unnaturally pale. He couldn’t help but feel a flicker of doubt.
"You... You’re not serious, are you?"
"What do you think?"
A nostalgic look flashed across the ancestor’s pale face. "Back in the day, when I was but a young grave robber with ideals, ambition, and lofty aspirations..."
"One time, while I was prospecting for tombs, I discovered a site with unbelievably good feng shui. Only emperors of bygone dynasties would be buried in a place like that."
"I thought I’d struck gold. Just one last big score and I could retire for good. So, I excitedly dug a tunnel and entered the tomb."
Seeing the fear in his ancestor’s eyes, Su Han asked curiously, "And then?"
The ancestor let out a long sigh. "And then... I dug her up."
Su Han: "..."
’Why does that... sound so familiar?’
’It seems like a lot of the ghost wives and zombie wives in those popular paranormal novels have similar origin stories!’
’Could it be that my ancestor is one of those protagonists?’
’So... the legendary grand-ancestress is a... zombie?’
Glancing at Su Han, the ancestor continued his tale with a long sigh.
"Back then, if my Emperor’s Blood hadn’t saved me at the last second, none of you unworthy descendants would even exist.
"I would have been turned into a shriveled-up corpse myself."
’Emperor’s Blood?’
’The Emperor’s Blood saved him again?’
Su Han thought back to the Imperial Mausoleum, when Su Xiaoqi had tried to curse him. Then, too, his Emperor’s Blood had flared up at the critical moment, shattering the curse and turning it back on Su Xiaoqi.
"Is it because the Emperor’s Blood suppresses evil forces?"
That made even less sense to him. If that were the case, how did she end up becoming his grand-ancestress?
’Could it be one of those "enemies-to-lovers" situations? A love-hate relationship? A "My Overbearing Zombie Lover" kind of story?’
"Bullshit!"
Just as Su Han’s imagination was running wild, the ancestor scoffed.
"You give the Emperor’s Blood way too much credit. While it’s true it can suppress evil, there’s a limit.
"Besides, the grand-ancestress isn’t a zombie..."
Su Han: "..."
’Wait... hold on a second.’
’If I heard him right, did my ancestor just call the grand-ancestress... Grand-Ancestress?’
’Am I hearing things?’
’Or does that mean...’
A certain possibility occurred to Su Han, and he quickly cut his ancestor off.
"Hold on! Ancestor, just wait a minute.
"What did you just call the grand-ancestress?"
The ancestor blinked. "I called her Grand-Ancestress."
Su Han: "...So she isn’t *my* grand-ancestress?"
The ancestor looked at him. "She’s my grand-ancestress, too."
Su Han: "..."
’So, doesn’t that make the family hierarchy a little... confusing?’
"Ahem... so, that grand-ancestress... she’s not... your...?"
SMACK!
The ancestor, finally realizing what Su Han was implying, smacked him on the back of the head.
"What nonsense are you thinking! She’s an ancestor of our Su Clan."
Su Han’s brain felt a little fuzzy.
"An ancestor of the Su Clan?"
The ancestor nodded.
"So the grand-ancestress recognized the Emperor’s Blood in you and didn’t kill you on the spot?"
The ancestor nodded.
"And that’s how I got my three Bloodline Fruits.
"The grand-ancestress gave me three Bloodline Fruits and very kindly told me that if I still couldn’t awaken my bloodline after eating them, it would prove I was unworthy of the Emperor’s Blood legacy, and she would suck me dry."
Su Han: "..."
’What the hell kind of "kindly" is that?’
But that wasn’t the main point.
The main point was...
"Ancestor, are you saying you dug up our grand-ancestress?"
The ancestor nodded gravely, a hint of melancholy on his face. "That’s right."
"So... you robbed your own family’s ancestral tomb?"
SMACK!
The ancestor, furious with embarrassment, smacked Su Han on the head again. "What do you mean, I robbed my own ancestral tomb?
"I stumbled into it by mistake! A mistake, you understand?
"I had no idea it was our own ancestral tomb before I went in."
At this, the ancestor shot Su Han a pointed look. "Otherwise, why do you think I didn’t smack you for barging into my Imperial Mausoleum with your people?
"I’m not like *some* people, who knowingly go and rob their own ancestor’s tomb."
"Ahem, ahem."
Su Han, completely unfazed, let out a couple of coughs to cover his embarrassment.
"It’s all thanks to your excellent teachings, Ancestor. Your descendant is merely following the example of his predecessors."
Before his ancestor could hit him again, Su Han decisively changed the subject. "So, who exactly is that grand-ancestress?
"She sounds like a pretty big deal."
The ancestor snorted. "What do you mean, ’sounds like a pretty big deal’? Let me tell you... the grand-ancestress’s background is more than just big, it’s enormous!"
Su Han played along, nodding. "What kind of background?"
The ancestor: "I don’t know!"
Su Han: "..."
