"Great General Talib has fallen in battle?"

From where he knelt prostrate on the cold stone floor, Adjutant Aziz choked out an answer.

"Yes, Your Highness."

"It was not enough that the Old Man of the Mountain died; now even the Great General has fallen?"

"...Yes, Your Highness."

As the harsh reality sank past his initial shock, the veins on the Sultan's forehead bulged. “What the hell were you all doing while our Great General was dying?!”

As the courtiers cowered under that fury, Aziz looked up with the resigned expression of a man already prepared for death.

"Everything is my fault, Your Highness. This happened because I failed to properly assist the Great General. Please, kill me."

"Very well!!"

Blind with rage, the Sultan drew the ornate saber slung at his waist and brought it sweeping down toward Aziz's exposed neck. Yet just before the edge bit into the flesh, the slash lost its momentum.

Thud.

The steel came to rest lightly against Aziz's skin.

The Sultan’s arm shook greatly from the sheer effort of holding himself back. Through his clenched teeth, he spat his words.

"Your head isn't worth a fraction of Great General Talib's life! However! We are now at war, and Western invaders are knocking at our gates! Pack your gear and march west right now! Your fate will be decided once this war is over. Let your merit and fault be the scale that decides your life.”

Having regained his reason at the last moment, the Sultan raised his head with bloodshot eyes and commanded his ministers.

"What are you dogs waiting for?! Get your asses to the western border and butcher every last one of those damned Jesus worshippers!!"

As soon as the Sultan's command fell, those gathered hurriedly left the palace.

Meanwhile, far to the west.

In the coastal city of Alexandria.

It was once the crown jewel of the Mediterranean, an economic powerhouse where silver, spices, and silks flowed like water. Today, that golden age was nothing but smoke and ashes. The legendary sea-fortress meant to hold off foreign fleets had already crumbled into rubble, and the streets were drowning in screams.

Actually, screaming was the least of it.

"Hallelujah!!"

"Cast the filthy heathens into hell!"

The battle cries of Crusaders filled this place.

They butchered their way down every boulevard, terrorizing the Muslim populace while shouting praises to the heavens.

"What are you doing!!"

A Crusader captain bellowed at his troops, though moral outrage had nothing to do with it.

"Ransack every building! Hunt down every piece of treasure those dogs left behind!"

It was to secure practical gains.

The Crusade was a loose coalition of rival kingdoms, which meant if you were not the first to sack a district, your neighbors would take everything for themselves.

And gold was only part of the prize.

"Drag the men off to the galleys for oarsmen, and pack the women and children into crates for shipping back home! Take everything that breathes!"

To these holy conquerors, every single possession in the Muslim world was fair game.

And such events were occurring throughout the western port cities of the Khalas Empire.

Barely two weeks after the invasion began, every single port city had been seized.

Even the holy city of Jerusalem fell to the Crusade.

Since the Crusaders claimed holy war rather than plunder as their justification, Jerusalem naturally became their primary objective.

For the Khalas Empire, Jerusalem was undeniably a holy sanctuary, but not their foremost priority. Their most revered sanctum was Mecca, followed closely by Medina.

Thus, the local commanders chose to swallow their pride and abandon Jerusalem, preferring to save their men rather than throw away their lives on an indefensible outpost.

Had the Crusaders marched on Mecca instead, every soldier in the Empire would have gladly thrown their lives away to protect it.

After two weeks passed, nothing Islamic remained on the coast.

Whatever was not burned to the ground had been butchered or loaded onto galleys bound for European markets. The Crusaders swept through the western Khalas Empire like the locust swarms described in their Bible.

Just as those locusts were gearing up to push East and swallow the interior whole—

"Allahu Akbar!!!"

"Drive out the filthy heathens!!"

The main army of the Khalas Empire had finally made the grueling march back from the East.

What followed was a pandemonium.

Day after day, thousands were thrown into active battlefields, and the front lines changed hands almost hourly.

Yet beneath the butcher's bill lay an undeniable anomaly.

Though the Khalas Empire's main force had returned, their strength was not what it once was.

The Old Man of the Mountain and the Brotherhood of Purity had vanished, and Great General Talib was nowhere to be seen on the front lines. Even Amir Zayd was missing in action, and their actual numbers were far thinner than the reports suggested.

Nevertheless, the Crusaders could not easily gain the upper hand.

"You expect us to trust the Florentines? If we take the brunt of the casualties, those snakes will turn on us in a heartbeat!"

"The French have always been two-faced bastards. We are not making a move until they do."

It was an alliance forged entirely out of greed, after all. Nobody trusted their neighbor, and everyone was looking for an excuse to pull out the daggers.

And honestly, who could blame them?

Even if they won this holy war, any king who lost too many men would find his homeland carved up by his so-called allies before the month was out.

With the Khalas Empire fighting on fumes and the Crusaders busy tripping over their own agendas, the war stalled into a bloody standstill, feeding thousands of innocent soldiers into an endless slaughter.

***

All the way across Europe, in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

After reviewing a letter that had flown from the distant East, the king snorted and crumpled the parchment.

"Idiots."

The letter contained a report about the Crusade that had been continuing for months, detailing how the campaign had ground to an embarrassing crawl while allied kings stood around glaring at each other.

Taking their cue from the monarch's derision, the courtiers bowed low and showered him with flattery.

"This is an opportunity for Portugal to advance further, Your Majesty."

"All of this is thanks to Your Majesty's wise judgment."

For once, the bootlickers were not entirely wrong.

Portugal had not invested much strength in the Crusade war. They knew that sitting on the sidelines meant taking home fewer wagons of stolen Muslim gold, but Portugal didn't need scraps from the Levant since they had found a far juicier prize.

"Hahaha! Let those morons tear each other apart while we quietly build our Empire! Once that pointless crusade winds down, we will march across the border and wipe Spain off the face of the earth!"

Portugal and Spain had hated each other's guts for generations.

"Indeed so, Your Majesty. Especially given those bizarre whispers coming out of Madrid lately, we must conquer despicable Spain as quickly as possible."

The king nodded at his minister's words.

"Exactly. They're imitating us and sent a fleet westward, haven't they? We must defeat them before they gain anything."

Greed settled on the king's face.

What was that nonsense Spain was spouting about the earth being round and reaching the Orient by sailing into the sunset?

If the Spanish expedition perished at sea, Spain's treasury would be depleted, which suited Portugal just fine; and if they succeeded, it mattered little. With the proper timing, Portugal could conquer Spain outright and seize both their newly discovered routes and their colonies in one fell stroke.

Enraptured by the vision of going down in history as his nation's greatest sovereign, the king cast a pleasant smile upon the map spread before him.

His eyes lingered over the African continent and India, where fleets sailing under the Portuguese crown were currently anchored.

Those were the lands Portugal had decided to strip down to the bone.

Though he called himself a pious man of Christ, he did not lose a single second of sleep over butchering and enslaving fellow human beings.

"Come, offer everything you have for our great Portugal!"

In their eyes, those with black and yellow skin were not human beings at all.

While the Khalas Empire and the Crusaders were fiercely at war, chaos was equally rampant in the eastern Islamic territories.

The warlords who had banded together to survive against the Khalas Empire were now tearing out each other's throats like hungry ghosts, fighting over the scraps of land that the Hong Dynasty had handed them.

The war was supposed to be over, yet the killing never seemed to stop.

Naturally, civilians got caught in the crossfire and fled in droves, with plenty spilling over into the territory governed by the Hong Dynasty.

Several warlords, including Lord Ma’mun of Nishapur, dispatched letters demanding the immediate return of the subjects who had fled across the border.

Obviously, Il-mok shut them down without hesitation.

"This land is governed by the laws of Hong now, and nowhere in our legal code does it say we deport people who have pledged themselves to the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult."

The warlords choked on that response, but they could do nothing with the Hong Dynasty’s army readily pointing their spears at them.

But that didn't mean the Hong Dynasty was running an open-door charity without standards.

"We have received reports that a gang from the north has banded together to terrorize the local populace under the guise of that Sharia law," an officer reported.

"Round up every last one of them and execute them without delay," Il-mok commanded.

The Heavenly Demon Divine Cult existed to protect the weak and shelter those who embraced its tenets, but it showed no mercy toward criminals, even if they claimed to be disciples of the Divine Cult.

After what felt like an endless marathon of sorting through local administrative headaches, Jong-ri Chu finally brought some actionable news.

"The Grand Preceptor's speculation was correct. That country called Portugal is invading India from the ocean. They are using dark-skinned men as slave labor. Specifically, slaves they captured while passing through the black people's continent."

Il-mok already expected much. "Then our next stop is India. We need to make contact with these Portuguese."

Whether that meeting ended with drawn blades or a diplomatic deal for passage along their sea lanes was something they would have to find out on the ground.

Later that evening.

After finishing various tasks, Il-mok stepped out into the night air for a quiet walk down the avenues.

Along the way, he encountered a group of Demonic Cultists who immediately dropped to their knees and bowed in unison.

"Long live the Grand Preceptor! May your life be eternal!”

Il-mok was completely caught off guard by the bow.

Cultists greeted him with respect on a daily basis, but this level of fanaticism felt way over the top compared to the usual.

Before he could ask, one of the kneeling men looked up and stammered out words of thanks in heavily awkward Chinese.

"We thank you for the Grand Preceptor's oceanic grace!"

The speaker was a Black brother from the Cult. In fact, every single man who had bowed to him just now was entirely composed of foreigners.

"Where is all this coming from? What are you thanking me for?"

"We happened to learn that the Grand Preceptor is preparing to depart south to send us back to our homelands!"

Il-mok sighed with a bittersweet smile. "I think your thanks are too premature. This is merely an attempt, so I cannot guarantee any of you will actually make it home."

This was why Il-mok had not widely publicized this fact.

Giving people false hope only to rip it away later was the cruelest thing a leader could do.

However, the cultists shook their heads.

"That is not so!"

"We know that returning home is difficult! Merely knowing that the Grand Preceptor would trouble himself on behalf of pitiful souls like us is more than enough to earn our eternal gratitude!"

"Even if we do return to our homelands, we will never forget this grace!"

"That is a promise! Until the day we die, we will spend every waking hour preaching the glory of the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult and the Grand Preceptor to all our kin!"

They bowed deeply once more and roared the sacred creed of the Cult.

"The Heavenly Demon Descends!!"

"Ten Thousand Demons Obey!!!"

Il-mok could only offer an awkward smile.

It wasn't that their gratitude was heavy to bear; he was already used to that.

'I wasn't sending them home to use them as missionaries.'

Somehow, his simple humanitarian gesture had morphed into an overseas crusade to convert the African continent.
