Solaena's [Guided] Journey (Fantasy LitRPG)
Chapter 81
As the aquatic center I had repeatedly encountered throughout my search for suitable locations to explore water [Flow]s finally entered my sight, my attention immediately settled upon the enormous advertisement banners hanging across its facade.
Unlike the overwhelming majority of Everwell's larger and popular establishments, it wasn't crammed into a tower.
Maybe because it didn't need to be.
Maybe because it couldn't be.
From where I stood, the aquatic center sprawled outward across an immense free-standing structure, broad enough that its width rivaled the footprint of several ordinary towers placed side by side, with multiple wings, elevated sections, and annexes extending from its central body.
That fact alone served as reasonable evidence of its quality.
After all, towers existed because upward expansion was a symbol of something, be it influence or wealth.
Space within them was constrained.
Expensive.
Compartmentalized around vertical access, structural supports, neighboring floors, and whatever other facilities occupied the same construction.
An establishment built freely across the ground suffered from far fewer of those restrictions.
In the case of an establishment dedicated to holding water facilities, pools could be made wider, deeper, and then be separated according to temperature, pressure, fluid composition, intended morphology, or whatever other specialized requirement demanded space.
Entire halls could be dedicated to singular aquatic practices without needing to compromise around what waited above or below them.
And judging by how extensively this place sprawled across the district, whoever operated it had taken full advantage of that freedom.
Which also meant paying for an absurd quantity of valuable peripheral district urban space.
An expenditure that only made sense if the establishment either generated an equally absurd amount of credits...
Or possessed enough specialized facilities to answer enough specialized demands to justify it.
Likely both.
I decelerated before its main entrance.
Around me, people continuously streamed through openings proportioned for different morphologies.
Humanoids.
Quadrupeds.
Several entities whose bodies appeared more naturally suited to water than land.
One gelatinous individual transported itself inside a sealed transparent container filled with green liquid.
Two children with webbed limbs sprinted ahead of what I presumed to be their parent before being sharply ordered to slow down.
A winged entity passed through an elevated entrance several meters above the ground.
I followed after it.
Today, there was no pristine white uniform covering me.
No four-looped golden torus knot announcing my Pulse Aspirant status.
No Pulse assignment waiting for me to fulfill beyond the entrance.
No patient to take care of.
I was here as myself.
On my own time.
Using my own credits.
Willingly.
Which sounded suspiciously similar to leisure until one considered what I intended to do.
I wasn't here to enjoy myself.
I was here to further my [Cultivation].
More specifically...
It was my first deliberate practical [Cultivation] toward forming the [Flow] Aspect.
My objective was simple enough.
I was to acquire greater [Comprehension] and [Mastery] of [Flow] through mediums whose behavior I could directly perceive, manipulate, experience, and compare.
Air had been the most obvious starting point.
Unfortunately, it had also been ineffectual.
I already possessed years of experience moving through it.
Thousands upon thousands of hours spent flying through it.
Accelerating.
Decelerating.
Turning.
Gliding.
Hovering.
Using [Flow]s.
Opposing them.
Exploiting pressure differences around my wings.
Correcting for turbulence.
Reducing drag.
Redirecting momentum through motions so deeply integrated into my [Foundation] that most had ceased requiring conscious thought long ago.
My recently sharpened interest in [Flow] had already made me revisit all of that with greater [Awareness].
Air no longer merely moved around me.
I increasingly noticed where it divided over my wings.
Where separate [Flow]s reunited.
Where my body disturbed one [Flow] and generated another.
Where momentum continued after the motion that produced it had ended.
Where a tiny angle created a disproportionate change farther downstream.
I possessed a deep [Mastery] of moving through air.
What I lacked was the [Comprehension] to deliberately isolate the concept of [Flow] from the act of flight itself.
Water offered something new.
Similar enough for existing [Knowledge] to remain relevant.
Different enough that habit couldn't answer everything before I consciously observed it.
The admission procedure went quickly.
I had already investigated the establishment.
Its prices.
Rules.
Facilities.
Depth restrictions.
Safety requirements.
Available pools.
Which sections accommodated tiny morphologies.
Which permitted prolonged submersion.
Which required proof of aquatic competence.
Which insisted upon supervision.
And which would become effectively unusable if the staff decided that a fairy remaining underwater for several hours constituted an emergency.
Preparation resolved most complications before they could exist.
Hence, I paid, verified my identity, accepted a tiny locker token, then followed one of the elevated passages deeper inside.
The route eventually entered an area saturated with enough [Ether] devices activity that my [Awareness] abruptly contracted.
Not vanished.
Obscured.
Distances grew uncertain.
The entities beyond nearby walls became indistinct.
Individual movements blurred into generalized presences.
Several devices had apparently been embedded throughout the walls specifically to prevent sensory Aspects from penetrating the surrounding changing areas.
For decency, I supposed.
Not that I honestly quite understood that concept yet.
What was the big deal with nudity?
Why were people ashamed of exposing certain parts of their body and not others?
What was the issue with exposing one's reproductive organs or sensitive parts?
Everyone was nude under my [Awareness], skin, organs, and everything in between, after all.
What's more, the Pulse had exposed me to more unclothed bodies than I could reasonably count.
Patients generally didn't retain clothing when said clothing interfered with treatment.
Procedures regularly required exposing organs, reproductive structures, wounds, excretory systems, or whatever else happened to be relevant.
I had inserted instruments into bodies.
Removed things from them.
Cut them.
Closed them.
Observed births.
Observed corpses.
Observed entities whose entire physiology left nothing resembling clothing-compatible modesty to begin with.
And somehow...
Seeing another person replace one piece of fabric with another required specialized [Ether] wards.
That was Civilization, I guessed.
I had long since accepted that not every convention needed to possess an immediately apparent [Purpose].
I entered one of the fairy-sized changing compartments.
My Aspirant uniform had remained in the Pulse Tower.
The simple clothing I wore came off.
The swimsuit went on.
One piece.
Close-fitting.
Dark enough that the facility's attendants had apparently considered it appropriate.
Thin straps crossed around openings specifically adjusted for my wings.
Nothing loose enough to interfere with swimming.
Nothing ornamental.
Efficient.
I inspected myself once.
Adjusted one strap.
Then left after securing my modest belongings.
The aquatic center proper opened before me.
And...
It was larger than expected.
The ceiling of this single hall rose nearly twenty meters.
Pools occupied most of the floor.
Not one.
Dozens.
Some shallow enough that giants stood with their upper bodies completely above the surface.
Others descended through multiple levels, their bottoms invisible beneath progressively darker water.
Artificial [Flow]s continuously moved through several elongated channels.
One enormous circular pool rotated slowly around a central structure, carrying swimmers with it unless they deliberately opposed the motion.
Another contained waves generated repeatedly by mechanisms hidden beneath one wall.
Several pools weren't filled with water at all.
One contained a thick translucent fluid through which broad-bodied entities moved with painstaking slowness.
Another was filled with something nearly colorless whose density appeared lower than water.
A third remained sealed behind transparent barriers covered with warning symbols.
Temperature variations spread through the air.
Humidity.
Minerals.
Cleaning compounds.
The faint traces of dozens of different liquids.
And people.
Everywhere.
Swimming.
Floating.
Diving.
Racing.
Training.
Playing.
Recovering.
Performing strange motions whose [Purpose] I couldn't immediately determine.
Some used fins.
Others boards.
Weighted objects.
Resistance cords.
Masks.
Breathing apparatuses.
One individual repeatedly jumped into a pool, climbed out, then jumped in again.
Truly, leisure was an extraordinarily broad concept.
I ignored most of it.
My destination lay toward the center of the facility.
A diving pool.
Deep.
Wide.
Mostly empty near the bottom.
The upper section remained active with individuals repeatedly launching themselves from platforms at different heights, but a separate lane along one side allowed direct entry for those interested in depth rather than falling elegantly from above.
I flew toward it.
A lifesaver stationed on an elevated platform noticed me.
Its eyes moved from my wings to the water and back.
"I've registered for extended-submersion practice, possess independent aquatic clearance, don't require atmospheric breathing while submerged, and will signal if I require assistance."
The lifesaver blinked once.
Then checked something on the panel beside it.
"You're Solaena?"
"Yes."
"Then you're cleared. Stay out of the marked descent zones while divers are active, don't enter the pressure-training shaft without additional authorization, and if you remain motionless on the bottom for long periods, wave at whichever lifesaver checks on you so we know you aren't unconscious."
Efficient.
"Understood."
I stepped off the platform.
Then plunged.
The surface closed above me.
Sound transformed.
The broad noise of the aquatic center became muffled impacts and distant vibrations.
Water enveloped me from every direction.
Cool.
Dense.
Heavy in a manner air never was.
I allowed myself to sink.
No immediate swimming.
No wing movement.
No [Will].
My arms remained beside me.
My wings folded tightly against my back.
My body descended.
And my [Awareness] expanded.
Water pressed against my skin.
Minute [Flow]s passed around me despite my apparent stillness.
Movements generated by swimmers above propagated downward.
Filtration systems pulled water toward hidden openings.
My own descent displaced fluid beneath me, which moved aside, curled upward around my body, then joined the water occupying the space I had vacated.
Already...
[Flow].
I narrowed my [Focus].
The temptation was to perceive water as a single surrounding mass.
But that was incorrect.
Or at least inadequate.
Nothing was ever still, be it the inside of one's body or the air encompassing everything.
Even regions appearing motionless relative to me consisted of countless overlapping movements.
Large [Flow]s.
Smaller [Flow]s inside them.
Turbulence generated around edges.
Pressure gradients.
The residual consequences of motions whose source had already disappeared.
A diver entered the pool twenty meters away.
My [Awareness] felt the event before I turned toward it.
Impact.
Displacement.
A broad pulse moved outward.
Then weakened.
But didn't simply vanish.
It became smaller movements.
Those movements encountered other movements.
Some reinforced.
Others opposed.
Some bent around my body.
I sank through them.
My fingers separated.
Water passed between them.
Another adjustment.
Taken from NovelPhoenix, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
I rotated my wrist.
The resistance changed.
One side of my palm became a surface opposing the water.
The other became sheltered from the direct [Flow].
A tiny rotational movement formed behind my thumb.
A vortex.
I repeated it.
Slower.
Faster.
Different angles.
My [Awareness] tracked everything it could.
My [Clarity] separated sensation from interpretation.
My [Comprehension] attempted to connect what I observed to the theory I had studied.
My [Mastery] Aspect revealed the humiliating difference between knowing how water should move and being capable of deliberately making it move that way.
My [Harmony] kept the entire exercise from degenerating into eleven different Aspects each dragging my attention toward their own preferred interpretation.
And my [Cultivation]...
My [Cultivation] Aspect asked but one question.
One that had always stood at the core of my fundamental [Truth] of [Cultivation].
How did I make the next attempt better?
I moved.
One arm swept backward.
My body shifted forward.
Simple.
Again.
The second stroke produced less wasted turbulence.
Again.
My legs joined.
Again.
Again.
Swimming.
Something Stavros had once taught me in theory because my journey toward the Everwell Sector required it.
Something I later transformed into practical competence because the ascent through the submerged passages following the Crimson Falls had refused to care how questionable that competence remained.
Back then, the crimson water had been an obstacle.
Visibility had disappeared.
[Flow]s dragged me into unintended passages.
I had sometimes resorted to [Will]ing myself motionless simply to wrest control away from blood water whose movement I couldn't properly predict.
The objective had been forward.
Upward.
Survive.
Navigate.
Continue.
Now...
I had returned to water under absurdly safer circumstances for the sole [Purpose] of comprehending what had once carried me wherever it wished.
I increased my pace.
Water divided around my head.
My shoulders.
Arms.
Torso.
Legs.
Every motion displaced it.
Every displacement produced consequences.
I turned sharply.
Momentum resisted.
Not my momentum alone.
The water I had accelerated continued moving after I changed direction.
Some of it followed.
Some of it separated.
My old path remained temporarily written into the pool as [Flow]s invisible to ordinary sight.
I circled back through them.
The interaction was fascinating.
I repeated the route.
Then deliberately crossed my own wake at another angle.
The water struck differently.
My swimming changed.
I stopped.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
Or attempted to.
My body halted under a pulse of my [Will].
The water didn't.
It [Flow]ed past me.
Around me.
Continued onward.
Gradually lost coherence.
Mixed with everything else.
A distinction I noted.
[Control] could stop me.
[Flow] concerned what happened afterward.
I returned to ordinary movement.
No [Will].
Only my physical body.
Stroke.
Glide.
Turn.
Stop.
Observe.
I varied everything.
Fast movements produced violent disturbances.
Slow ones revealed subtler [Flow]s.
Broad motions moved large quantities of water inefficiently.
Narrow motions produced more localized changes.
Flat palms pushed.
Angled palms redirected.
My legs generated propulsion differently from my arms.
Opening my wings even slightly multiplied everything.
I had initially kept them folded to prevent my [Mastery] of flight from contaminating the exercise too heavily.
Eventually...
That became counterproductive.
I unfolded my lower pair by a few degrees.
Water met the iridescent surfaces.
The sensation was bizarre.
My wings were designed for air.
Thin.
Broad.
Ridiculously responsive.
In water, every minute adjustment produced far greater resistance.
I moved one.
Slowly.
Water [Flow]ed over its upper and lower surfaces.
The trailing edge generated a [Flow] I could perceive with astonishing clarity.
I changed the angle.
Again.
And again.
Then both lower wings.
Then the upper pair.
I remained nearly motionless while using only tiny adjustments to redirect water around myself.
That...
Was familiar.
Not swimming.
Flight.
Except it wasn't.
The medium changed everything.
Air yielded.
Water resisted.
In air, mistakes could often be corrected through another motion.
In water, the momentum of the surrounding medium itself became an opponent.
Or an ally.
I stopped thinking of my wings as propulsion.
Instead...
Surfaces.
Structures water had to move around.
I tilted one.
A [Flow] was divided.
The portion passing above accelerated differently from the portion passing below.
I shifted another wing downstream.
Caught part of that [Flow].
Redirected it.
A third adjustment altered the result again.
My [Comprehension] sharpened.
I knew what I had intended.
I perceived what happened.
The difference between the two became impossible to ignore.
Then I repeated the sequence.
Until a lifesaver started descending toward me.
I noticed long before he approached.
He wore some manner of propulsion apparatus over his legs and a clear breathing device across his face.
He gestured.
A simple questioning motion.
I waved.
He pointed upward.
I shook my head.
Then pointed at myself and made the agreed signal indicating continued intentional submersion.
The lifesaver stared for two seconds, visibly reconsidered whatever argument he had intended to make, then ascended.
Like that, I returned to my [Cultivation].
Movement.
Stillness.
Movement.
Stillness.
Eventually, I stopped using my body almost entirely.
I hovered through tiny wing adjustments.
Then ceased even those.
Allowed myself to sink.
Observed water [Flow] with my [Awareness] without attempting to influence it.
That distinction mattered too.
[Flow]s existed without me.
My movement merely revealed them.
Generated more of them.
Altered them.
But everything [Flow]ed due to many more factors.
Pressure.
Temperature.
Gravity.
External movement.
Architecture.
Countless interactions.
To understand [Flow] only as something I personally directed would be to mistake one application for the concept.
So I became still.
Minutes passed.
Swimmers moved far above me.
[Flow]s reached me later.
I traced them backward as far as my [Awareness] allowed.
One broad disturbance originated from someone entering the pool.
Another from the filtration system.
Another appeared to be the dying remnant of several [Flow]s interacting until identifying an individual origin became meaningless.
Was that what [Flow] was fundamentally about?
Not the movement itself.
The continuity.
Something moved.
Its movement affected something else.
That effect became movement.
No clean boundary existed between cause and continuation.
The original action could end while the [Flow] it generated persisted.
My Essence overdevelopment disorder immediately came to mind.
A disturbance.
An Aspect advancement.
A density event.
An intensive [Cultivation].
The initiating event ended.
Its consequences continued to [Flow] through my Essence.
One disturbance pushed another.
[Flow]s intersected.
Pressure accumulated somewhere I didn't want it.
Not that this was anything more than an analogy.
Useful for starting out, but ultimately misleading.
So I refused to make more of it.
Eventually, a second lifesaver checked on me.
I waved before she came close enough to gesture.
She turned around immediately.
Until at last, I decided to end my [Cultivation] session.
I rose.
Not quickly.
That would waste the opportunity.
I swam upward through [Flow]s generated by other swimmers.
Allowed one to push me sideways.
Corrected using its own movement instead of directly opposing it.
Entered another.
Redirected.
Adjusted.
The surface approached.
I breached it without needing to gasp.
Water streamed down my face.
My wings unfolded.
One beat lifted me free.
The transition from water to air was almost startling.
Resistance vanished.
My body felt absurdly light.
My wings...
Free.
I hovered over the pool.
Air flowed around them in a way so familiar I had stopped consciously perceiving most of it years ago.
Except now water remained fresh in my [Comprehension].
The comparison occurred naturally.
Density.
Momentum.
Resistance.
Continuity.
Pressure.
Different mediums.
Different expressions.
Nevertheless, something underneath remained shared.
Not that I could exactly define it.
I simply felt it.
That was it.
And with that strange sensation prickling at my mind, I returned to the changing area, passed through the strange decency wards, dried myself, changed, then left.
The aquatic center had cost me credits.
Time.
A tiny amount of Essence development.
But it had been worthwhile.
The [Flow] Aspect was only half of my present highest priority, however.
My return to the Pulse Tower therefore ended not in my booknest...
But in one of the secluded practice chambers I had started using whenever my own room felt unnecessarily cramped for what I intended to carry out.
I closed the door.
Sat.
Then... did nothing new.
For that was the point.
My [Foundation] [Cultivation] wasn't going to consist of attempting some exotic practice I had never performed before.
Everything I had learned suggested the opposite.
The greatest early danger of pursuing the [Foundation] Aspect lay in treating familiarity as proof of fundamentality.
Something repeated often wasn't necessarily part of my [Foundation].
Something old wasn't automatically [Foundation]al.
Something new wasn't automatically auxiliary.
The only reasonable starting point was therefore to confirm what already existed.
What did my Path actually rest upon?
I entered communion.
My Essence unfolded.
[Guided] (Origin)
[Cultivation] (Tier 2)
[Comprehension] (Tier 1)
[Awareness] (Tier 2)
[Secrecy] (Tier 0)
[Will] (Tier 3)
[Clarity] (Tier 1)
[Harmony] (Tier 1)
[Ambition] (Tier 1)
[Purity] (Tier 1)
[Mastery] (Tier 0)
[Vitality] (Tier 0)
Twelve Aspects.
Grasping each individually had long become a trivial affair.
Comprehending why each belonged, though, was not.
Be that as it may, there was an obvious starting point.
My Origin Aspect.
My first Aspect.
The one that had existed before I possessed language with which to understand what an Aspect was.
What role did it occupy?
Not merely guidance.
That description had become laughably incomplete.
[Guided] retrieved [Knowledge].
Directed [Exertion].
Corrected errors.
Structured practice.
Filled gaps.
Found routes through undertakings I lacked the ability to solve consciously.
It had participated in the formation, advancement, and development of every part of my Path.
Was it [Foundation]al?
Obviously.
But why, precisely and exactly?
Because... my Path had been constructed around trusting, testing, refining, interpreting, and eventually learning to stand alongside its guidance rather than merely obey it.
Remove [Guided], and the Path that remained might still function.
But it would not be my Path.
And that sort of neither deep nor shallow, but rather "basic" [Comprehension] and [Clarity] was what I assumed I needed to hone in on the concept of [Foundation].
Therefore, I moved on
My [Cultivation] Aspect.
Development as a deliberate process.
Not improvement for improvement's sake.
Not endless optimization detached from [Purpose].
The systematic transformation of effort into advancement.
Intensity.
Repetition.
Recovery.
Adaptation.
Integration.
It connected nearly everything I did.
My physical vessel.
Aspects.
[Comprehension].
[Mastery].
Even today's swimming had been transformed from an activity into a [Cultivation] because the Aspect shaped how I approached it.
[Foundation]al.
Next...
My [Comprehension] Aspect.
What did I understand?
Not what I know.
Not what I glimpsed.
What structures did I actually grasp well enough to test their limits, implications, and relationships?
My Path depended upon converting [Knowledge] into something I could truly use.
[Foundation]nal.
Next...
My [Awareness] Aspect.
The ability to perceive enough of myself and the world for every other practice to operate upon reality rather than assumption.
My body.
My environment.
My Essence.
Minute reactions.
The [Flow]s of water I had just spent hours studying.
Without [Awareness], [Guided] could still direct me, but I would understand far less of why.
[Foundation]al.
I turned my [Focus] to the next Aspect...
My [Secrecy] Aspect.
I paused.
It was useful.
It was important.
It was an integral Aspect of my Path.
But was it [Foundation]al?
I didn't decide immediately.
My Path did benefit immensely from choosing what others could perceive.
Concealing capabilities.
Controlling information.
Moving unseen.
Protecting portions of myself from observation.
But if my [Secrecy] Aspect disappeared tomorrow, would the conceptual direction of my Path collapse?
No.
Would a significant method through which I protected that Path vanish?
Yes.
That seemed different.
I marked the distinction mentally.
Perhaps it wasn't [Foundation]al at the deepest level, but it could still be to some degree.
Next...
My [Will] Aspect.
My capacity to impose.
To continue.
To transform intention into force when my body, my mind, or reality resisted.
If I were to define one of my Path Aspects as [Foundation]al, it would be it.
There was barely anything to examine.
My [Ambition] without my [Will] would be desire without execution.
[Guided] without [Will] would become instruction I could fail to carry out.
[Cultivation] without [Will] would stop wherever difficulty exceeded convenience.
[Foundation]al.
After that came my [Clarity] Aspect.
Separation.
What was.
What merely appeared.
What I wanted to be true.
What actually served my [Purpose].
My recent Path would be unrecognizable without it.
[Foundation]al?
Possibly.
But was [Clarity] itself foundational, or had it become one of the primary tools through which I protected deeper [Foundation]s?
Another distinction.
I didn't force an answer.
[Foundation] shouldn't be a list I constructed because I disliked uncertainty.
Next was my [Harmony] Aspect.
Relationships.
Not sameness.
Not peace.
The ability of different components to coexist and serve a greater whole without losing what made each valuable.
My Path was already too complex for brute conceptual isolation.
Twelve Aspects.
Dozens of practices.
Conflicting expressions.
[Ambition] pushed.
[Purity] rejected.
[Harmony] integrated.
[Clarity] distinguished.
[Mastery] commanded.
Without my [Harmony] Aspect, many of my strongest practices would become collections of competing effects.
Certainly [Foundation]al.
My [Ambition] Aspect...
It embodied a direction.
Not goals.
Not wanting one particular Aspect.
Not wanting to solve one particular disorder.
It was my Path's demand to continue upward.
To exceed.
To make each solved limitation reveal the next one worth destroying.
[Foundation]al.
Perhaps the most personally defining Aspect after [Guided] and [Will].
My [Purity] Aspect...
The preservation of what belonged to my Path while allowing change.
The boundary between adaptation and losing myself to what altered me.
[Foundation]al?
Increasingly.
Its Tier 1 advancement had already exposed how thoroughly my Path had retained the same direction despite changing form again and again.
Yet, it had formed comparatively recently.
But did age mean anything?
That itself confirmed something from my research.
A new structure could be [Foundation]al if everything future already depended upon it.
My [Mastery] Aspect...
Command of what I already possessed.
The distinction between reproducing a successful motion and knowing why it served its [Purpose].
Today's water exercise had made its role plain obvious.
I could swim, but that did not mean I possessed [Mastery] of water [Flow].
The Aspect existed to expose precisely that difference.
[Foundation]al to how I intended to develop from here?
Yes.
[Foundation]nal to what I had always been?
Less certain.
Again...
I didn't force it.
My [Vitality] Aspect...
New.
Barely settled compared to nearly everything else.
And yet unquestionably [Foundation]al to what came next.
My body would increasingly depend upon it.
My future physiological [Cultivation] would be built around it.
My intention to transform my physical vessel beyond ordinary fairy requirements depended upon it.
Its existence had already altered how I conceptualized [Life], [Persistence], [Recovery], and [Adaptation].
New didn't mean shallow.
I completed the first pass.
Then started again.
This time, not individual Aspects.
Synergies.
Basics only.
[Guided] and [Cultivation].
Direction and development.
[Guided] and [Will].
Instruction and execution.
[Ambition] and [Will].
Direction and imposition.
[Awareness] and [Clarity].
Perception and distinction.
[Comprehension] and [Mastery].
Understanding and command.
[Cultivation] and [Mastery].
Develop what I possessed; command what I had already developed.
[Harmony] and [Purity].
Integrate what belonged; refuse what didn't.
[Vitality] and [Cultivation].
Persist through development; turn strain and recovery into further capacity.
[Ambition] and [Vitality].
Demand more than my vessel could naturally endure; give that vessel the means to survive the demand.
Then combinations of three.
[Awareness], [Clarity], [Comprehension].
Perceive.
Distinguish.
Understand.
[Comprehension], [Mastery], [Cultivation].
Understand.
Command.
Improve.
[Ambition], [Will], [Guided].
Want.
Impose.
Know where.
Simplified, yet even so useful precisely because of that.
I wasn't trying to discover novel synergies.
I was confirming the [Foundation] beneath everything more complicated.
The parts so basic I rarely thought about them anymore.
The relationships my Path used hundreds of times per day without naming them.
When I flew...
[Awareness] perceived.
[Guided] adjusted.
[Mastery] commanded what years of flight had given me.
[Cultivation] still sought improvement.
When I treated a patient...
[Awareness] examined.
[Clarity] distinguished.
[Comprehension] interpreted.
[Mastery] identified what I could actually command.
[Guided] filled gaps.
[Vitality] acted.
[Harmony] kept the complete procedure coherent.
When I researched...
[Guided] retrieved.
[Clarity] filtered.
[Comprehension] structured.
[Mastery] exposed where recognition masqueraded as [Comprehension].
[Cultivation] turned the entire process toward advancement.
When I pursued anything difficult...
[Ambition] gave the undertaking weight.
[Will] made stopping optional.
And beneath all of it...
[Purity] increasingly asked whether what I gained still belonged to the Path I intended to walk.
There.
That was a [Foundation].
Or one view of it.
Not an answer.
A structure to revisit.
To test.
To refine.
I remained in communion.
Then deliberately repeated the exercise from another direction.
Instead of asking what each Aspect contributed...
What would happen if one disappeared?
No [Awareness].
My interaction with the world became dependent upon narrower senses and [Guided].
No [Clarity].
My capacity to distinguish [Truth] from convenient interpretation degraded.
No [Harmony].
My thoughts would fall into [Chaos] while my Aspects would remain individually powerful but increasingly difficult to combine without conceptual interference.
No [Purity].
Change would come easier, but so would becoming something I had never intended.
No [Mastery].
I would continue improving while never knowing whether I actually commanded what I improved.
No [Vitality].
My body would return to being an increasingly unacceptable limitation.
Each absence revealed the shape of what remained.
Before I knew it, hours had passed.
And throughout those hours...
Nothing happened.
No Essence disorder.
No revelation.
No sudden pulse informing me I had discovered the [Foundation] Aspect after one exercise.
And despite that, it could only be said that my [Foundation] [Cultivation] had succeeded.
I had taken something vague—deepening my [Foundation]—and transformed it into a form of repeatable [Exertion]—a [Cultivation].
I reviewed the basic roles of my Aspects.
I confirmed which roles were truly integral.
I reviewed their simplest synergies.
I separated what was [Foundation]al from what was merely useful, habitual, or presently important.
I challenged every conclusion.
I repeated after sufficient new experience accumulated.
Exactly the kind of [Cultivation] I preferred.
Better yet, when I finally emerged from communion, my schedule remained almost offensively empty now that Xafsa had reduced my required Pulse duties to one assignment every eight days.
Not that I didn't have a thousand and twenty-four [Cultivation]s to fill it with.
Visiting the aquatic center to increase my [Comprehension] of water [Flow] had only been the first step.
Many other [Flow]s existed for me to acquaint myself with—anew or not.
Heat [Flow].
Crowds [Flow].
Energy [Flow].
Blood [Flow].
Perhaps eventually... thought [Flow].
And, when my [Comprehension] and [Mastery] of the [Flow] concept became sufficient to avoid what I intimately knew to be a place that didn't obey logic...
Essence [Flow].
Alternatively, I also had all manner of [Foundation] [Cultivation]s that would take me to the most basic recesses of my body, mind, and Path.
The roles of every one of my Aspects.
Their simplest relationships.
My body.
My most integral [Knowledge].
