Nine days after my [Clarity] Aspect advanced, [Guided] finally judged my overdevelopment safety margin sufficient for me to resume meaningful [Cultivation].

I immediately made my way to one of the secluded practice chambers within the Pulse Tower, sealed the door, sat down, and began.

My [Will] spread throughout my Essence, elevating my [Awareness] before turning it inward.

[Clarity] followed, then [Comprehension], [Harmony], [Purity], [Mastery], and every other portion of my Path relevant to what I intended to accomplish.

Finally, I brought my [Cultivation] to bear upon the objective tying everything together.

Forming my [Foundation].

I slipped into true communion.

Thirteen Aspects unfolded within my Essence, connected through relationships ranging from those I had spent years refining to the ones surrounding my still relatively new [Flow] Aspect.

Not that age alone meant anything.

Something old could be obsolete, while something new could become fundamental almost immediately if enough of what followed came to depend upon it.

So I returned to the [Comprehension] left behind by my [Clarity] advancement.

A [Foundation] wasn't merely what remained underneath everything else.

It was what allowed everything resting upon it to keep growing without needing to be rebuilt each time.

The question was what that actually meant for my Path.

My [Cultivation] routine provided the most obvious place to begin.

The routine I followed now would have been almost unrecognizable compared to the ones I had practiced in Volow, within the Prime Temple, during my Sentinel training, throughout my journey across the Nexus, or even during my first months in the Pulse.

[Exertion]s had disappeared.

Others had replaced them.

My Aspects had advanced or been synthesized.

Objectives that once occupied the highest tier of priority had become irrelevant once achieved.

Yet my [Cultivation] had never needed to begin anew, fittingly embodying the [Cycle] concept synthesized into it.

I observed.

Learned.

Understood.

Experimented.

Corrected.

Repeated until what once demanded effort became something I could reliably command, then raised the standard and continued.

My present [Cultivation] already touched upon combat, flight, logistics, academic research, biology, healing, mathematics, Essence, economics, social relationships, [Faith], [Flow], and more subjects than were useful to enumerate individually.

Those pursuits weren't independent.

Medicine had expanded my biological [Knowledge], deepened my [Comprehension] of living structures, improved my [Mastery] over my own body, and eventually contributed toward the formation of my [Vitality] Aspect.

Logistics taught me how resources moved across systems, how disruptions propagated, and how constraints in one place altered consequences elsewhere.

Economics approached many of those same relationships from another direction.

Both became useful to my [Flow].

Combat had developed my [Awareness], [Will], [Mastery], [Clarity], body, decision-making, and ability to apply everything under pressure.

Every new pursuit built on top of what already existed.

[Guided] identified relevance.

My [Awareness] Aspect gathered.

My [Clarity] Aspect distinguished.

My [Comprehension] Aspect connected.

My [Mastery] Aspect turned understanding into command.

My [Purity] Aspect helped distinguish what genuinely belonged within my Path from what merely happened to be useful.

My [Harmony] Aspect allowed everything to remain integrated despite those distinctions.

My [Cultivation] Aspect turned the result toward further development.

And my [Will] and [Ambition] Aspects ensured that difficulty remained something to overcome rather than a reason to stop.

That was the structure I had spent years building.

Then another implication followed.

No one else knew it.

Xafsa probably understood more of my Path than almost anyone.

It had supervised years of my development, corrected my medical practices, watched me form my [Mastery] and [Vitality] Aspects, and possessed enough experience to infer things I had never explicitly explained.

Be that as it may, it still only knew what it could observe.

So did Lorekeeper Avenorium.

Stavros.

The fairies I met within the Court.

My fellow Aspirants.

The wealthy entities who had recently begun treating me as a useful economic connection.

Every one of them encountered some exterior expression of my Path.

A fairy.

A Pulse Aspirant.

A healer.

A young economic analyst.

An Entity with an unusual Origin Aspect.

Someone with an overdevelopment disorder and far too many Aspects for her age.

They saw outcomes, and occasionally some of the efforts that produced them.

They didn't see my [Cultivation] routine.

Not really.

They didn't know how many corrections [Guided] imposed throughout an ordinary session.

Which practices I had repeated until they became instinctive.

Which conclusions I overturned.

Which branches I abandoned.

Which behaviors existed solely because of my overdevelopment disorder.

Or which portions of my present existence I intended to discard the instant they stopped serving my Path.

Even explaining everything wouldn't truly allow anyone to grasp its Essence.

Words could transmit the [Knowledge] of what my Path was about.

They couldn't make someone else experience every decision that had built it.

Which made seeking recognition or criticism for any of it rather pointless.

Another Entity considering my efforts impressive without truly understanding their depth wouldn't improve them.

Someone deciding my Path was too broad without genuinely discerning its Essence wouldn't make it less coherent.

Approval wouldn't deepen my [Comprehension], improve the synergies between my Aspects, or cause an hour of my [Cultivation] routine to produce twice as much progress.

Not that their judgments would be wholly pointless either.

Advice could reveal mistakes.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Criticism could expose assumptions I hadn't questioned.

A perspective different from mine could provide [Knowledge] or [Comprehension] I lacked.

But those things possessed value because of the information they contained.

Recognition itself possessed none.

And if no one else could know my Path as intimately as I did...

Why should their idea of what my Path ought to become define its limits?

That question held considerably more relevance.

Civilization produced endless advice about specialization.

Choose what mattered.

Do not waste decades developing something tangential to one's true Path.

Do not risk attempting difficult Aspect syntheses when more reliable ones accomplished what one already required.

Do not spread limited time across so many pursuits that none could reach sufficient depth.

None of those pieces of advice were inherently wrong.

I practiced the same optimization constantly.

[Guided] discarded more irrelevant [Knowledge] from my consideration than I could ever hope to study, and I had no intention of becoming competent in everything simply because everything existed.

But there was a difference between refusing what held no value and refusing something because reaching it might take too long.

Or because it might fail.

Or because it fell outside whatever boundaries one had already decided constituted their "true" Path.

I had seen enough of Civilization to recognize how readily those concerns became limits.

Entities spent decades becoming extraordinary within one narrow direction, then treated anything beyond it as a distraction from the Path that supposedly mattered.

Others abandoned objectives whose eventual rewards they considered worthwhile because attaining them might consume a century.

Aspects went unpursued because the chance of failing to form and advance them made the expected investment unattractive.

Again...

Reasonable.

Time was a finite resource in practice, just as Essence development presently was for me.

The difference was what I intended to accomplish with my finite resources.

Combat.

Logistics.

Academic research.

Biology.

Healing.

Mathematics.

Economics.

Social structures.

Essence.

If there was one thing my [Ambition] allowed me to know for certain, it was that for all the apparent breadth my Path already possessed...

It was barely the beginning.

Civilization contained fields I didn't know existed.

Reality contained concepts I presently lacked the [Knowledge] to name.

There were problems whose premises I couldn't yet understand, methods of [Cultivation] my Essence couldn't presently support, and directions my future self might consider obvious that I remained incapable of imagining.

I didn't want all of them.

But I wanted everything that proved relevant.

Not simultaneously.

Not blindly.

Not at the expense of more important priorities.

However, if something became sufficiently worthwhile...

Why should its difficulty determine whether I would eventually reach it or not?

Because I could fail?

I had failed thousands of times already.

Because it could take decades?

Then it would take decades.

Because some things might genuinely prove beyond my capabilities?

Possible.

But I would rather discover and experience that limit myself than assume it existed beforehand.

Reality had never promised otherwise, after all.

But there was a fundamental difference between discovering a limit and deciding upon one before ever reaching it.

My [Clarity] made that distinction almost offensively obvious.

Adapting after reality demonstrated that something was impossible could be rational.

Assuming I could never accomplish something because the undertaking appeared too broad, too difficult, too distant, or too time-consuming wasn't.

That would mean placing a ceiling above my own Path before reality had placed one there for me.

And worse...

It would mean failing to live up to my [Ambition].

My [Foundation] couldn't depend upon what another Entity believed my Path should contain when they could only ever observe pieces of it.

Nor could it be defined by the activities presently occupying most of my time.

Those would change.

Even my existing Aspects couldn't define it absolutely, because they would advance, be synthesized, and others I hadn't formed yet could eventually become so integral that imagining my Path without them became nonsensical.

My [Foundation] had to survive all of that.

Not by remaining unchanged.

By allowing everything else to change without forcing me to begin from nothing.

The [Knowledge] to make future learning easier.

The [Comprehension] to connect unfamiliar problems to structures I already understood.

The [Mastery] to turn old effort into present capability.

The relationships that caused the [Cultivation] of one portion of my Path to naturally develop others.

The standards through which I distinguished what belonged from what should eventually be discarded.

Everything I had built, serving as the starting point for everything I intended to build afterward.

And among those things...

My refusal to define the eventual limits of that development without first encountering them.

That was part of my [Foundation] too.

It had been since before I possessed the [Comprehension] required to describe it.

Starvation hadn't convinced me that acquiring more food was beyond me.

Exhaustion hadn't convinced me to stop moving.

Pain hadn't convinced me to fear and avoid it.

The difficulty of learning hadn't convinced me that ignorance was acceptable.

My overdevelopment disorder hadn't convinced me to simply wait for my Essence to mature.

Every version of my [Cultivation] routine had changed because reality forced me to adapt, but none had ever been built around the premise that I should stop reaching for something merely because I might fail.

Questioning whether every objective was worthwhile was necessary.

Questioning whether my methods were correct was necessary.

Questioning my [Comprehension], [Mastery], [Clarity], [Purity], and [Harmony] when evidence demanded it was necessary.

Questioning that I could accomplish something merely because it looked unreasonable...

That would be the first sign that the [Foundation] underlying my [Ambition] had started crumbling.

The distinction settled.

And with it, everything else did too.

No one needed to know my Path as intimately as I did.

No one needed to recognize the effort beneath it.

No external description needed to encompass its breadth.

Those things weren't what made it coherent.

I knew what I had built.

I knew why its pieces belonged.

I knew which portions were temporary, which had survived years of change, and which relationships allowed every new development to begin from somewhere higher than the last.

And most importantly...

I knew I intended to keep building.

My [Foundation] wasn't a fixed collection of things upon which my Path presently rested.

It was the accumulated structure that allowed my Path to become more without ceasing to be mine.

My Essence reacted.

The change began slowly enough that I remained in uninterrupted true communion, my [Awareness] following the subtle movements of my Essence while [Guided] corrected the depth of every Aspect I continued to elevate.

Ultimately, though, my [Comprehension] held.

So did the relationships supporting it.

Ripples formed.

Scattered.

Then gathered.

I knew what they represented.

The coming of my fourteenth Aspect formation.

A relative formation difficulty of one hundred and five according to the crude triangular model.

Once, reaching a formation barrier like this had been sufficiently distant that the number held little practical relevance.

Now I was not simply pressing against it...

I was living it.

Like all my previous Aspect formations and syntheses, it began in its own unique way.

I felt the [Foundation] I had spent months defining become increasingly distinct within my Essence.

Then the structures already supporting my Path reacted around it.

Connections I had cultivated for years.

Settled developments.

Old [Comprehension]s now serving as the basis for newer ones.

Practices so deeply integrated that executing them no longer required conscious preparation.

Everything my Path already relied upon remained what it was.

The new Aspect merely found its place among them.

Then the final resistance disappeared and gave rise to a confluence of concepts that slowly suffused my entire existence as the concept of [Foundation] truly became part of my being.

The resulting formation disorder spread throughout my Essence.

I remained in true communion and observed it with all the gravity it deserved for as long as it took for the concept to fully sublimate into my Aspect.

Aspect Formed: [Foundation] (Tier 0)

And just like that, my fourteenth Aspect, my [Foundation] Aspect, had formed.

The formation ended up consuming an unpleasant portion of my overdevelopment safety margin, but this time, at least, that was entirely expected and even wanted.

Shortly afterward, the formation disorder settled enough for me to end my communion after parsing the new state of my Essence.

[Guided] (Origin)

[Cultivation] (Tier 2)

[Comprehension] (Tier 1)

[Awareness] (Tier 3)

[Secrecy] (Tier 0)

[Will] (Tier 4)

[Clarity] (Tier 1)

[Harmony] (Tier 1)

[Ambition] (Tier 1)

[Purity] (Tier 1)

[Mastery] (Tier 1)

[Vitality] (Tier 0)

[Flow] (Tier 0)

[Foundation] (Tier 0)

I had done it.

Another major step taken.

Not that it was anything more than that.

Almost nothing about my immediate situation had changed.

My new [Foundation] Aspect was Tier 0.

So was my [Flow] Aspect.

Neither stood anywhere close to the level of development required for the Essence [Cultivation] methods I intended to build around them, and everything I presently knew indicated that advancing both to at least Tier 2 would be necessary before they could meaningfully loosen the restrictions imposed by my overdevelopment disorder.

Which meant this was only the beginning.

Two Aspect formations accomplished.

Four Tier advancements still ahead of me.

Along with all the [Comprehension], [Mastery], experimentation, and integration required before those advancements became useful rather than decorative.

It would take time.

Probably a lot of it.

Conveniently, my Essence remained exceptionally proficient at forcing unwanted quantities of that upon me.

At least that gave me plenty of opportunities to continue researching alternatives to the [Serenity] Aspect, develop my [Faith], cultivate useful relationships, and make lots of credits whenever my safety margin refused to let me do anything more important...

I could work with that.
