Chapter 141: Chapter 141: Let’s Give Up

"Li Wang, what do you propose we do about this situation?" Yun Yiyou asked, looking up at the captain beside him.

Captain Li, having been asked, secretly rolled his eyes. ’Ask me? What could I possibly know about this?’

After his momentary eye-roll, Captain Li turned to face him and replied respectfully, "My King, I do not know."

Seeing his earnest and serious expression, Yun Yiyou didn’t press the matter.

’Captain Li is just the Personal Guard Captain. What would he know about this?’

Yun Yiyou turned his gaze to the large live-feed screen. Lin Jingjing and her group were still fighting valiantly, slaughtering mutant beasts. By now, they were so drenched in blood they looked like they were made of it.

They were all wounded, but Shi Feng was the most severe. His combat ability was the weakest of the group, and he had just been impaled in the lower abdomen by a female mutant beast’s claw.

The beast had then violently yanked its claw out, pulling his intestines out along with it.

Shi Feng’s reflexes were sharp, but the mutant beasts here came in all varieties—speed types, power types...

They were hideously ugly, bearing no resemblance to the beautiful and handsome forms they once had in life.

All that remained was terror and savagery.

’I have no idea what that ’young master’ is planning, creating so many artificial mutant beasts.’

’Are they trying to attack the Capital Star? Do they want to overthrow the current dynasty?’

’Or does that ’young master’ just want to kill everyone?’

None of this was for them to know. The "young master" had yet to reveal himself, and his ultimate goal remained a mystery.

Feng He had already carried Shi Feng to the side, and Lin Jingjing quickly erected a protective barrier around the two of them with her spiritual power.

Once it was up, Lin Jingjing slipped the Space Ring from her finger and tossed it to Feng He, as it contained all the medical supplies and tools.

"Shi Feng?" Feng He asked, lightly slapping his cheeks. "How are you doing?"

"Hurts..." Shi Feng replied weakly.

As he spoke, he reached for his lower abdomen, his hand touching wet, slick intestines.

The texture felt wrong. Shi Feng lifted his head slightly to look down, and his hand froze when he saw his own intestines.

A dry chuckle escaped his lips. "I’m so fucking awesome..." With that, he passed out.

Feng He could only pat his cheek again before beginning emergency treatment.

Lin Ye, who had been weaving through the crowd to help the wounded, saw they needed assistance and rushed over with his medical kit.

"Feng He, need a hand?" he asked.

Feng He looked up. Seeing it was Lin Ye, he said, "I need something to clean the wound and medicine to stabilize him."

Seeing the hole in Shi Feng’s abdomen, Lin Ye quickly opened his medkit and took out a mechanical spider, no bigger than his thumb.

He flicked a switch, and the mechanical spider crawled toward the gaping wound in Shi Feng’s abdomen. It might have looked small, but it was incredibly useful.

It could return exposed organs back inside the body cavity.

And it was fast, finishing the job in just ten minutes.

"Thanks," Feng He said, looking up at him. "There are a lot of other wounded who need treatment. You should go help them. We can’t afford to delay their treatment."

Lin Ye nodded at his words. "Understood."

The soldiers here were nearly all dead, and Lin Jingjing could feel their emotions as they passed.

The spiritual power Protective Shields she had placed on them would slowly dissipate upon their deaths and return to her. The instant a shield returned, the soldier’s bitter unwillingness to die would surge directly into her heart.

Lin Jingjing knew that none of these dying soldiers wanted to perish.

As the feelings piled up, it became difficult for Lin Jingjing to bear. She wanted to break down and sob, but in the end, all she could do was suppress each wave of emotion and force herself to keep fighting.

Gu Kaiwen and Mo Xuan were covered in wounds, large and small. Both of them looked like they were on their last legs.

They wanted to pass out but didn’t dare.

"Gu Kaiwen, Mo Xuan." Seeing them struggling to stay upright, Lin Jingjing stepped forward and put her hands on their shoulders.

They both looked up at her. Seeing their blood-streaked faces, her heart ached terribly.

’If only I were a little stronger... if I could just deal with all these mutant beasts...’

’Would they have been spared all this suffering?’

"What’s wrong, Sister Lin?" Gu Kaiwen asked, still managing a wide grin. "I can still hang in there."

"Me too," Mo Xuan chimed in.

"You don’t have to anymore. No one can resolve this situation anyway," Lin Jingjing said, her voice surprisingly calm. "Sometimes, giving up is the best option. Otherwise, everyone will just lose their lives here."

’This endless war between humans and mutant beasts will never stop.’

"Let’s give up," Lin Jingjing said, her voice eerily calm. Her words made both of their eyes fly wide open.

Give up...

’Sister Lin... is telling us to give up!’

"Sister Lin!" Mo Xuan grabbed her wrist, his voice rising. "If we give up, what will happen to them?"

"This isn’t something a handful of us can resolve," Lin Jingjing said, shaking her head.

"I don’t want you all to die here."

Gu Kaiwen quickly interjected, "As long as we’re together, I’m willing to die all over again."

’As long as I can be with everyone, even death is fine.’

Mo Xuan said nothing, but his resolute expression made his stance clear.

"I don’t want you to die. You’re too young for that. We all have bright futures ahead of us," Lin Jingjing said as she created a Protective Shield around the three of them.

The mutant beasts charging straight for them slammed headfirst into the shield. Some hit it so hard their heads started to bleed.

"You see? There are so many mutant beasts, and they haven’t even all emerged from up there yet. We can’t handle this," Lin Jingjing said in a soothing tone. "Let’s leave this kind of thing for the higher-ups to solve. The five of them couldn’t possibly make a difference, no matter how hard they tried."

Lin Jingjing looked at the bodies of the dead. They lay silently, their faces frozen with expressions of terror, unease, fear, and grief.

Maybe they had felt regret. Maybe they had longed to go home.

But now, they would never have the chance.

This battle had affected her more deeply than any before.

Because of the spiritual power connecting her to them, Lin Jingjing had felt every one of their emotions.

Just as Lin Jingjing was about to be overwhelmed by these emotions, Feng He’s voice rang out from behind her.

"Sister Lin!"

"You need to be strong!"

"I won’t let you say such hopeless things, and I won’t let you wear that hopeless expression!"

Feng He walked up to Lin Jingjing, raised his hands, and cupped her face.

He looked into her eyes, his tone earnest and encouraging. "You can do this, Sister Lin."

"I believe in you. Those negative emotions won’t affect you. They’ll only become the fuel that drives you forward."

After he spoke, Feng He smiled at her. "Don’t be afraid. Let me sing you a song."

With that, he pulled Lin Jingjing into an embrace and began to sing softly.

"Twinkle, twinkle, shining bright,

The sky is full of little stars."

"..."

The gentle, healing song slowly began to disperse the fog in Lin Jingjing’s heart, allowing her to see the path forward once more.
