Soulless Soul
Chapter 84: The Buried Path
Chapter 84: The Buried Path
The black symbol continued pulsing on Chloe’s holographic display not once but twice.
Three times. The pulses were in perfect rhythm with the deep vibration under their feet. It was a rhythmic, artificial cadence that felt less like geological instability and more like a heavy machine or a massive heart that was laboring to shake off its centuries of dormancy. The distorted geometry around the mark bled a dim crimson light onto the translucent screen, casting chaotic shadows over Chloe’s tense face.
Sky stared at it, his instincts screaming that whatever was hidden under the hill was something that they shouldn’t be approaching. His [Danger Sense] was no longer just a localized prick on the back of his neck, but a deafening, internal alarm that vibrated in perfect rhythm with the pulse. Every tactical cell in his brain told him to turn back and to flee the perimeter to find some other way out of this shifting nightmare.
Unfortunately, the labyrinth had other plans for them and it was not going to go according to qhat they wanted.
A loud CRACK echoed through the darkness.
The sound was sharp and loud like the splitting of a huge iceberg and the air shifted violently with the sound as a localized shockwave rippled through the grass, throwing loose dirt and pulverized shale into the night air.
The ground behind them split open and Sky immediately stepped back and pulled out his Blood Blade. The crimson edge of the weapon sliced through the air with a soft hiss as a faint light cast an eerie red glow over the widening fissure. His eyes darted across the opening, looking for claws or gaping maw to burst from the breach.
"That’s new," he muttered, adjusting his stance, balancing his weight on the shifting earth.
A section of the hillside collapsed, revealing a narrow staircase descending into the darkness.
The earth didn’t cave in but fell cleanly away as if something had triggered a structural release. The exposed stone was completely different from the chaotic, muddy trenches of the upper maze. It was smooth and dark, and it was precisely cut with a precision that seemed completely out of place in the wild, ruined landscape.
Dust rolled out of the opening, heavy with the smell of ancient copper, iron filings and stagnant, dead air that has been cut off from the sky for millennia. The cloud billowed around their boots and choked out the warm radiance of Vesper’s scepter for a moment.
Chloe stared at it through her visor, her head tilting as her analytical software went into overdrive.
"That’s the passage," she whispered, her fingers pausing above her interface as the sonar waves she had sent down suddenly found a clear, unobstructed channel.
Vesper approached the entrance and inspected the ancient stonework. She held the Holy Scepter Blade over the lip and allowed its golden light to wash down the first few steps. The stone seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it and the dark, polished surface revealed faint, geometric grooves on the edge. "How old?" Vesper asked, her calm tone was a stark contrast to the chaotic rumbling around them.
"Impossible to tell," Chloe replied, her visor whining as she recalibrated her depth sensors.
Chloe projected several scanning lines across the staircase. Bright blue grids of light shot down into the dark, mapping out the dimensions of the opening and tracing the rise and run of each step with absolute precision.
"The construction isn’t consistent with the rest of the labyrinth."
Sky frowned, looking from the dark stairs to the shifting red map in the air. "What does that mean?" "It means someone built this," Chloe said, her voice dropping an octave as she read the structural density reports. "The upper maze is a chaotic mess of shifting blocks and raw magic. It’s fluid but this is rigid, load-bearing architecture. It was designed to withstand the movement of the upper layers without cracking."
Silence stretched between them with an ominous tone. The growls of the Savage Beasts hunting each other in the upper corridors seemed to die down, replaced by the hollow, echoing void right in front of them.
Sky looked down the staircase. The steps disappeared into complete darkness, a vertical abyss that seemed to have no floor.
"Someone?"
"Or something," Chloe added grimly.
Vesper turned towards Chloe, her sharp brown eyes reflecting the faint remnants of the blue grid lines. "Can you map it?" "I’m trying."
Chloe’s fingers flew across her holographic interface, her keystrokes flying in a desperate attempt to force her sensors past the threshold of the entrance. A three-dimensional map appeared in the air between them. It looked simple. Just one staircase. Just one corridor.
The digital lines showed a clean shaft that dropped at a sharp forty-five degree angle into the earth. Then the map distorted. The clean blue lines started to twist and the lines began to curve violently as if caught in a powerful gravitational eddy. The layout bent sideways and fractured into jagged, unreadable static before snapping back into place and distorting again.
The hologram flickered, spitting out erratic sparks of blue and red data streams that dissolved into nothingness. Chloe froze, her fingers hovering in mid-air. "What?"
Sky noticed the change immediately, his hand tightening further on the hilt of his blade.
"What happened?"
"The passage is interfering with Network Link."
"How?" Sky asked, stepping closer to ensure that no physical threat was causing the disruption.
"I don’t know," Chloe said, her voice tinged with frustration and a hint of panic. "It’s not a physical obstruction or a standard magical barrier. It’s like the space down there is actively rejecting my data packets. The signals go down but they return completely scrambled."
She tried again, her fingers sweeping across the controls to initiate a hard reset of her mapping array.
The result was the same. The blue grid lines shot down the stairs, holding their shape for a fraction of a second before shattering into a chaotic web of digital noise. Every time her ability attempted to map the lower section, the data became corrupted and left them blind to anything beyond the first ten steps.
Sky looked at Vesper. "That doesn’t sound good." "It isn’t," Vesper agreed smoothly. She didn’t waver and simply shifted her grip on her staff, her knuckles steady against the wood. Vesper stepped onto the first stone step and the ancient granite groaned faintly under her weight. Sky immediately followed, his boots clicking softly against the dark stone as he took his place just behind her shoulder, his Blood Blade held ready to intercept any strike from the gloom.
Chloe sighed and grabbed her toolkit, checking the straps on her gear with practiced, nervous movements. "Of course we’re going down there." Sky paused, looking back up at her over his shoulder. "You don’t have to." Chloe gave him an incredulous look, her visor flashing an orange error code as she stepped towards the edge of the pit. "And let you two wander into an unknown underground structure without the person who can actually map it?" Sky paused, evaluating the sheer utility of her sensors, even though they were compromised. "...Fair point."
Chloe adjusted her visor and stepped onto the staircase, her breath catching slightly as she crossed the threshold into the buried structure. "Besides, if there’s something down there interfering with my Network Link, I want to know what it is. A signature like that could mean ancient tech, or something worse."
Vesper glanced into the darkness below, her golden scepter casting a steady, unwavering spear of light into the gloom. "Then stay close."
The three of them began descending.
Step by step. The descent was steep and the ancient stones were smooth and slippery with condensation. The further they went, the colder the air became. It wasn’t the natural chill of an autumn night, it was an artificial, biting frost that seemed to seep through their boots and suck the warmth out of their muscles. Their breath began to bloom in white, ragged plumes before the golden light of the staff.
Behind them, the entrance slowly disappeared into darkness. The rectangular patch of starlight grew smaller and smaller until the shifting walls above finally ground back together, sealing the opening and silencing the sounds of the upper world. They were completely isolated now, trapped in a stone throat that lead straight into the heart of the anomaly.
And somewhere far below...THUM. The black symbol continued pulsing on Chloe’s display.vOnce.bTwice.
