Chapter 87: The Grove Awakens

The Soul Clone stopped.

Sky suddenly felt something. A pressure. Not physical. Something touching his soul. His eyes widened. "Get back." The Soul Clone immediately turned. Too late. The enormous tree moved. Not its branches. Not its roots. The entire trunk seemed to pulse.

THUM.

Sky staggered. His hand flew to his chest.

"What the—"

A wave of cold rushed through his body. For a brief moment, he felt as though something had reached through the connection between himself and his Soul Clone. Something was trying to pull him toward the tree. The sensation was violently invasive, like an icy hook dragging against the very fabric of his consciousness.

Sky immediately severed the connection. The Soul Clone vanished. He dropped to one knee. The stone floor beneath him felt distant, his vision blurring as a cold sweat broke out across his forehead

.

Vesper grabbed his shoulder. "Sky."

"I’m fine."

"You don’t look fine." Her grip was tight, her sharp gaze scanning his face for signs of internal trauma. Sky slowly stood. His face had gone pale, his breathing shallow as he forced the lingering chill out of his spiritual pathways. "Don’t send your abilities near that thing."

Chloe’s expression tightened. "What happened?"

"It noticed my Soul Clone."

Chloe froze. "Noticed it?"

"It tried to pull me toward it."

She immediately turned toward the chamber.

"That’s impossible."

"Apparently not."

Chloe activated another scan. This time, her visor produced a warning. Then another. Then another. Her holographic display filled with errors. The clean, blue interface of her tactical overlay warped into a chaotic mess of flickering crimson notifications.

"Sky..."

"What?"

"I can detect something now."

Vesper looked at her. "How dangerous?"

Chloe stared at the readings. Her fingers trembled slightly against the control module mounted to her wrist. "I can’t calculate it."

That answer made all three of them silent.

Chloe had been able to analyze everything they had encountered so far. Weapons. Savage beasts. Dungeon structures. Even the Goblin Chieftain. Her advanced technology had provided clean data points and predictable threat levels for every nightmare they had faced. But this thing? Her system couldn’t understand it. The sensors were registering an energy signature that didn’t just overload the data banks—it defied the foundational laws of the dungeon itself.

Vesper slowly stepped forward. Her hand hovered inches from the hilt of her weapon, her instincts screaming at her to put distance between them and the pulsing behemoth.

"We should leave."

Sky nodded. "Agreed."

They turned around. Then stopped.

The corridor behind them was gone. Not blocked. Gone. Where the passage had been was now a solid wall of pale roots. Sky stared at it. "You’ve got to be kidding me." The roots shifted. Slowly. Almost gently. They spread across the stone wall, weaving together with a terrifying, fluid precision that left no gaps, no cracks, and no hope of an easy breakthrough. Then one of them curled around the ancient helmet lying on the floor. The metal groaned under a sudden, silent pressure before the helmet disappeared beneath the roots.

Sky’s eyes narrowed. The forest wasn’t merely alive. It was expanding. And it had just closed their only way out. Chloe swallowed, her back pressing against the newly formed barrier as she held her scanner out like a shield. "I think..." She paused. "I think we’ve entered its territory."

A faint rustling sound spread through the chamber. Then another. Then hundreds.

The silence that had defined the grove for centuries shattered. Every pale tree around them began to move. Their branches slowly turned toward the three Awakened, scraping against one another like dry bones in a crypt. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of stagnant earth and ancient decay.

Vesper raised her blade. Golden light erupted across the chamber, casting long, dancing shadows against the closing walls of wood and stone. The radiant energy pulsed defensively, a stark contrast to the absolute darkness creeping in from the edges of the room.

Sky summoned his Blood Blade. The crimson weapon materialized in his grip, its familiar warmth grounding him against the spiritual chill that still threatened to numb his fingers.

Chloe stepped backward, gripping her tools. Her jaw was set, her eyes darting between the multiplying errors on her screen and the encroaching wall of white timber. And at the center of the Silent Grove... The enormous tree pulsed again.

THUM.

This time, Sky heard something inside his head. Not a voice. Not words. Just hunger. A hunger that seemed to reach directly for the depths of his soul. It was a bottomless, crushing void that demanded to be filled, a predatory instinct older than the dungeon itself.

And for the first time...

Sky realized something terrifying. The thing beneath the grove wasn’t simply hungry. It was hungry for him. And it was hungry for souls.

The silence lasted only a few seconds. Then the entire grove moved. Branches twisted overhead, scraping against one another with a dry, horrifying sound. The noise echoed through the cavernous space like thousands of brittle bones grinding together in the dark. Pale roots slowly pushed through the soil, spreading across the ground like veins beneath translucent skin. They writhed and twitched, pulsing with a faint, sickening bioluminescence that cast an eerie glow over the crumbling stone architecture.

Sky tightened his grip on the [Blood Blade]. The familiar warmth of his blood-bound weapon offered a small comfort against the unnatural, freezing atmosphere that seemed to be actively draining the warmth from the air.

His eyes darted across the chamber. There were too many. The trees weren’t attacking yet. They were watching. Waiting. Every twisted bough and knot in the wood felt like a hollow eye socket, tracking their every breath. The absolute stillness of their observation was worse than a sudden rush of violence; it felt calculated, a patient predator sizing up its prey before closing the trap entirely. "Chloe," Sky said quietly, his voice barely a whisper against the low, rhythmic hum vibrating through the floorboards of the grove. "Tell me you found a weakness."
