Chapter 94: The Hidden Depths

Every single root in the chamber erupted at once.

It was the tree’s final death spasm.

The pale timber didn’t simply twist or crack, but instead convulsed in violent, uncontrolled bursts as it’s enormous roots tore through the ground, and smashed the remaining stone structures to pieces like glass.

The sheer force sent shockwaves racing across the chamber, shredding the golden sigils of Vesper’s defensive matrix one after another.

Vesper was thrown backward.

A trunk-sized root slammed into her shield, lifting her complete off the ground and sending her crashing into the stone wall.

Chloe was knocked off her feet as well as her tools scattered across the floor. Advanced scanning modules and portable diagnostic kits skittered over the cracked stone as their digital indicators blinked erratically.

Sky’s Soul Clone was already collapsing.

The psychic backlash from the tree’s death throes tore through the phantom’s smoky framework threatening to unravel his consciousness completely.

The connection between the two was rapidly deteriorating.

But Sky refused to stop.

He ignored the blood pooling in his eyes, the high pitched ringing in his ears, and the tearing sensation racing up his mind, as he poured every remaining fragment of his willpower into the clone’s failing body.

The Soul Clone raised the Blood Blade once more.

The crimson edge ignited with a final, blinding radiance, as it drew directly upon the life force sustaining the projection.

Sky’s eyes hardened.

"Die."

The blade came down.

CRAAAAACK!

The black core shattered.

The obsidian sphere split completely down the middle as a web of blinding white light erupted from the center of the leathery eye, as the whole thing imploded.

For a single second—

Nothing happened.

The entire grove froze.

No wind.

No movement.

No sound.

Even the ancient branches seemed to hold their breath.

Then—

BOOM!

A wave of darkness exploded outward from the enormous tree.

It wasn’t an explosion of fire, but a concussive shockwave of condensed spiritual negative energy blasting outward from the epicenter of the trunk.

The force hurled fragments of ancient wood and stone across the chamber. The air filled with a lethal storm of razor sharp white splinters and powdered granite.

Sky instinctively raised an arm to shield his face.

He planted his feet against the ground bracing himself against the roaring gale as his tattered cloak whipped violently around his shoulders.

Then—

Silence.

The raging wind died as suddenly as it had appeared only the faint sound of dust settling.

The silence lasted for barely a moment before thousands of lights emerged from the shattered core.

Blue.

White.

Golden.

They didn’t burst outward violently, but instead drifted into the air like a gently spreading mist, casting a soft, ethereal glow across the ruined chamber.

Countless soul fragments escaped from the broken tree.

They rose through the enormous chamber like a swarm of glowing stars.

They were the remnants of centuries of victims, adventurers, monsters, and lost souls who had been trapped and consumed to satisfy the entity’s endless hunger.

Sky stared upward.

For a moment the sheer beauty of the sight made him forget the battle entirely.

The countless lights illuminated the vaulted arches of the subterranean cavern, transforming the ruined chamber into something almost peaceful.

The pain in his chest faded into the background, as the cold sweat on his skin no longer mattered as all he could see were the spirits.

They drifted higher and higher, passing between the pale branches before vanishing into the darkness above.

There was no struggle.

No screaming.

No agony.

Only peace.

They were finally free from the twisted matrix that had bound them together for centuries.

Behind them the tree began to change.

Without it’s core, the artificial life sustaining the organism began to collapse.

Its roots withered rapidly.

Thick, muscular conduits turned black and shriveled into brittle husks within seconds.

The surrounding pale trees lost their unnatural vitality and began collapsing one after another.

The living wall that had trapped them broke apart.

Branches snapped under their own weight, crashing onto the floor like dead limbs.

CRACK!

The enormous central trunk split from top to bottom.

A jagged chasm tore through the colossal monument as the white wood began to rot almost instantly, it’s stolen life force abandoning the organism.

Vesper slowly pushed herself upright.

Her movements were stiff, one hand pressing against her cracked breastplate while she leaned heavily against her Holy Scepter Blade for support.

She surveyed the collapsing grove before turning toward Sky.

Her breathing was shallow, but the sharp, analytical focus had returned to her eyes.

Chloe was already back on her feet.

She frantically brushed dust from her heavy mechanical gauntlets while staring at the internal HUD projected across her visor.

The display flickered repeatedly.

Her sensors were struggling to re-calibrate after the enormous multi-spectrum spiritual discharge.

Then—

Sky’s Soul Clone finally returned.

The projection snapped across the distance, dissolving into a stream of dark smoke that rushed back into his chest.

The connection slammed into him.

It wasn’t a smooth re-entry, it felt like a physical blow to his sternum.

Sky’s breath was knocked from his lungs and his entire body jerked.

He dropped to one knee breathing heavily.

The exhaustion from the spiritual expenditure struck him all at once.

His limbs became heavy, almost weightless in their weakness.

For several seconds he simply remained there.

He watched the final particles of light disappear into the distant ceiling before finally moving.

The Dungeon Array appeared before his eyes.

A translucent blue system window appeared in the center of his vision, it’s crisp lettering standing out against the dusty darkness.

[SOUL DEVOURER CORE DESTROYED.]

Sky stared at the message.

Soul Devourer?

So that was what the creature had been called.

It hadn’t been some mutated plant or regional variant of an ordinary monster.

It was a classified high-threat soul predator.

Before Sky could think further, another notification appeared.

The blue interface suddenly flashed crimson.

[WARNING.]

[ANOMALOUS SOUL SIGNATURE DETECTED.]

Sky’s expression changed.

His eyebrows rose sharply as his hand tightened around the Blood Blade triggering his survival instincts.

"What?"

He stared at the message.

The Dungeon Array’s readings were absolute.

Whatever it had detected didn’t belong to him, Vesper, Chloe, or the destroyed Soul Devourer Core.

An anomalous soul signature.

Where?

Sky quickly scanned the chamber.

His eyes moved across the shadows, searching for a hidden enemy, surviving monster, or perhaps a second phase of the battle they hadn’t anticipated.

Nothing.

The strange tree was dying, the roots collapsing, the countless soul fragments had vanished into the darkness above.

There weren’t any obvious signs of another living entity nearby.

Yet the notification remained.

Unblinking.

Like an eye that refused to explain what it had seen.

Then, without warning, the message disappeared.

The crimson border dissolved and the Dungeon Array returned to its normal dormant state.

Sky frowned.

If anything, the sudden disappearance made him more uneasy.

"What was that about?"

He shook his head, trying to clear the remaining mental static.

"Sky?"

Chloe’s voice pulled him back.

The electronic modulation of her suit’s speakers sounded hurried and slightly distorted.

Sky looked toward her.

"What?"

She pointed toward the ground.

Her armored frame stepped backward as she extended one mechanical arm toward the base of the dying monument.

"The tree."

Sky turned.

The enormous trunk finally gave way.

The remaining fibers dissolved into fine white powder no longer capable of supporting their own massive weight.

Then—

BOOOOOOM!

The colossal tree collapsed across the chamber.

A tremendous wave of dust exploded outward, shaking the floor beneath their feet as thick gray ash swallowed the chamber, obscuring their vision for several seconds.

Vesper raised an arm to protect her face.

She closed her eyes against the stinging debris as her cape quickly gathered a layer of soot.

Chloe activated her visor.

Her sensors switched to thermal and high penetration modes, cutting through the opaque cloud of dust.

"Wait."

Sky narrowed his eyes.

There was something different about her voice.

It wasn’t panic, but shock.

"What?"

"There’s something beneath it."

As the dust slowly settled the three of them finally saw it.

The massive base of the tree had been resting on something that shouldn’t have been there.

Something buried beneath the ground.

The roots had grown over it like a natural seal, hiding it from the rest of the labyrinth for centuries.

A massive staircase.

Ancient stone steps descended into the darkness.

The masonry was completely different from the rough-hewn stone surrounding the upper levels.

These steps were made from wide, perfectly cut slabs of obsidian darken granite, each one carved with intricate geometric patterns that didn’t resemble the architecture of any known dungeon faction.

Sky approached.

His boots crunched over the pulverized wood as he reached the edge of the newly exposed abyss.

He looked down.

The staircase disappeared deep beneath the chamber.

It didn’t curve or turn, it simply descended straight down into a colossal vertical shaft, that seemed to have no bottom.

This wasn’t a small passage, it wasn’t some forgotten corner of the labyrinth.

It looked like a road leading into an entirely different section of the Dungeon Realm.

And judging by its scale, it had been build for something far larger than an ordinary human party.

Chloe slowly approached the opening.

Her mechanical frame cast a long, blocky shadow across the first few steps as she held her scanner over the edge.

Her visor immediately began process the environment.

A green laser grid swept across the dark stone attempting to bounce signals off the walls, and calculate the depth.

Lines of information flashed across her displays.

The data streamed across her monitors at incredible speed.

Then— 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

It stopped.
