Chapter 181: The Black Moon Heart
The black sphere hung above the center of the enormous chamber, surrounded by countless strands of Mana that stretched into the walls, beneath the platform, and toward the ceiling.
The brightest strands disappeared into the darkness above, extending beyond the facility’s visible structure.
After fighting their way through Mensus, the Ashcrofts had finally reached its center, but the sight before them raised an immediate question.
Just how far did this network extend?
Reinhard stepped closer, allowing his Mana perception to follow the strands. He traced one toward the ceiling, but its signature eventually blended into the disturbance surrounding Marvello. He tried another and encountered the same result. Whatever the Heart was connected to, its reach extended beyond the chamber.
"This isn’t an ordinary energy source," Reinhard said. "The network continues beyond the facility."
Maki approached the nearest strand and examined its Mana flow. "Some of the energy is moving away from the sphere, but other strands are carrying Mana back toward it. I initially thought this was a circulation system, but the direction keeps changing."
As she spoke, one strand brightened before its Mana suddenly reversed. Maki followed the change with her magical sensing, then looked toward the sphere.
"The Heart isn’t simply supplying power. It might be maintaining a connection."
Reinhard followed the same strand with his perception, but the flow shifted before he could trace its destination. He withdrew his attention and looked at Emily, who had remained focused on the black sphere since they entered the chamber.
She had barely moved, and her expression had grown increasingly serious.
"Emily?" Reinhard asked.
She stepped closer to the platform, watching as the sphere’s surface shifted almost imperceptibly. The Mana fluctuation passing through the chamber felt familiar, reminding her of the phenomenon she had investigated years ago. Back then, she had struggled to understand what she was sensing. Now, standing before the Heart, she felt as though she had finally found something connected to that experience.
Reinhard joined her and rested a hand against her lower back. Emily glanced at him before reaching for his other hand, and he intertwined their fingers.
"I’ve felt something like this before," she said. "Not exactly the same, but the fluctuation is similar to what I experienced when I first encountered the Black Moon."
"Do you think this is where it came from?"
"I’m not sure. I couldn’t understand it then, and I still can’t explain it now."
Before Reinhard could answer, the surface of the sphere rippled.
One of the nearest strands brightened, sending a pulse through the platform beneath their feet. The light traveled into the surrounding structure before disappearing, and Maki immediately turned toward the point where it had begun.
"The pulse started inside the Heart," she said. "The surrounding Mana increased afterward, so it wasn’t simply absorbing energy from the chamber."
Emily tightened her grip on Reinhard’s hand. She recognized the rhythm, although she couldn’t tell whether the Heart had produced the fluctuation or responded to something beyond it.
Reinhard gently squeezed her fingers before looking toward Maki. "Can you follow where it went?"
Maki nodded and moved toward another section of the network while Reinhard spread his perception across the chamber again.
This time, he followed the changes instead of trying to map every strand. The pulse traveled upward through the structure, passed beyond Mensus, and blended into the Mana disturbance spreading across Marvello. He couldn’t trace the entire route, but the connection was unmistakable.
At almost the same moment, Maki sensed another fluctuation moving through the network.
"The Mana surrounding Mensus is changing," she said. "Some of these strands are carrying fluctuations that didn’t originate inside the chamber. The Heart is receiving changes from outside as well as sending them outward."
Reinhard looked toward the strands disappearing into the darkness above them. The Black Moon wasn’t simply an external phenomenon hovering over Marvello. The Heart was connected to it, and that connection appeared to be helping sustain whatever was happening to the city.
However, they still didn’t know which side had initiated it. The Heart might have created the connection, or it might be stabilizing something that already existed.
Another pulse moved through the network, briefly illuminating several strands in sequence. Maki followed their movement, then frowned as the Mana reversed direction again.
"The flow changes depending on the pulse," she said. "I can’t tell whether the Heart is maintaining the connection or responding to something that requires it to remain stable."
Emily listened quietly, her attention returning to the sphere as memories from her earlier investigation resurfaced.
Years ago, she had discovered records describing experiments in which researchers measured Mana fluctuations alongside pain, fear, resentment, and other emotional responses. They hadn’t merely recorded physical reactions. They had been searching for patterns, trying to understand how those states affected Mana.
At the time, she hadn’t understood what they hoped to accomplish. Standing before the Heart, she began to wonder whether those experiments had been connected to Mensus.
"The researchers I investigated were studying how emotional distress affected Mana," Emily explained. "They believed those reactions could reveal something about the phenomenon. I couldn’t understand why they were measuring those things, but if their research was connected to this place, they might have been trying to understand how the Black Moon responds to something beyond ordinary Mana."
Maki considered the shifting strands. "That would explain why they were measuring more than energy levels. If the Heart responds to fluctuations outside this chamber, they might have been studying what produces those changes rather than simply how much Mana someone possesses."
She paused as another strand brightened.
"We still can’t prove the experiments were connected to this structure, though."
Emily nodded. She had spent years trying to understand the Black Moon, and now the records she had uncovered might be part of a much larger mystery. The experiments had already been horrifying, but the possibility that they were connected to the Heart made her wonder how much the researchers had actually discovered.
Reinhard noticed her grip tightening around his hand. He moved closer until their shoulders touched, then brushed his thumb across her knuckles.
"I thought that if I gathered enough information, I’d eventually understand what happened," Emily admitted. "But the closer we get to the answer, the more questions I find."
Reinhard lifted their joined hands and pressed a brief kiss against her knuckles. "Then we’ll find the answers together. You’ve already uncovered more than you knew when you started, and you don’t have to figure everything out alone anymore."
Emily leaned against his shoulder for a moment before looking back at the Heart. The uncertainty remained, but having Reinhard beside her made it easier to face what they had found.
"All right," she said, straightening. "Let’s figure out what this thing is doing."
Reinhard smiled and turned toward Maki. "Can you determine what happens when the flow changes direction? We need to know what would happen if we interrupted the connection."
Maki returned to examining the network, following several successive fluctuations. The Mana initially moved away from the sphere, but the next pulse caused several strands to reverse direction. The pattern repeated, although not every strand responded in the same way.
"The Heart isn’t functioning like a one-way power source," she concluded. "It sends energy outward, but it also receives changes from beyond the chamber. I can’t tell what would happen if we damaged it."
That complicated their options. If the Heart was sustaining the connection, destroying it might weaken the Black Moon’s influence. If it was stabilizing something that already existed, damaging it could make the disturbance worse.
Reinhard studied the sphere before looking toward the strands extending beyond the chamber.
"We’re not attacking it blindly," he decided. "We need to understand the connection before we interfere with it."
A heavy impact suddenly rolled through the upper facility.
Dust fell from the ceiling, and the platform shook beneath their feet. The Mana strands trembled in response, their light flickering as another disturbance passed through the network.
The fighting above hadn’t stopped. Baal, the Collectors, and the other forces were still battling for control of Mensus, and the damage spreading through the facility was beginning to affect the Heart.
Reinhard caught Emily around the waist when the platform shifted again. She steadied herself against his arm while he watched the sphere.
Several strands flared at once, while others twisted out of alignment. The black surface of the Heart contracted inward before expanding again, and a powerful pulse rushed through the network.
"Maki, what’s happening?" Reinhard asked.
"The network is reacting to the disturbance, but the changes aren’t limited to the chamber." Maki followed the Mana through her magical sensing. "Some sections are becoming more active while others are losing stability. I can’t tell whether the Heart is correcting the imbalance or making it worse."
Another pulse traveled through the strands, moving away from the sphere and into the surrounding structure. Reinhard followed it with his perception until it disappeared beyond Mensus. At the same time, the Mana surrounding the facility grew stronger.
Emily recognized the fluctuation immediately. It was the same rhythm she had felt during her earlier encounter with the Black Moon, but this time she could see its effects traveling through the network.
The Heart was responding to the disturbance above them, and the changes were spreading beyond the chamber.
Reinhard considered severing one of the brighter strands, but the shifting Mana made him hesitate. If the network sustained the connection, cutting it might weaken the phenomenon. If it held something unstable in place, the same action could make everything worse.
"We don’t have enough information to predict what would happen if we damaged it," Maki warned. "The flow is changing too quickly."
Reinhard nodded, keeping his attention on the Heart. They had found the structure connecting Mensus to the Black Moon, but they still needed a way to stop it safely.
Then the sphere surged again.
Black Mana flooded the nearest strands, and the energy rushed toward the upper structure. Reinhard followed the flow with his perception, but before he could trace its path, the Mana suddenly reversed.
Every strand connected to the chamber pulled taut.
The black sphere contracted so sharply that its surface seemed to collapse inward, then expanded with a violent pulse that shook the entire platform. Reinhard pulled Emily against him as she gripped his coat, and the two of them watched the network flare around the chamber.
The familiar fluctuation raced through the strands, passing beyond Mensus and spreading into the Mana surrounding Marvello.
Maki’s expression changed as she sensed the network’s flow settling into a different pattern.
"Reinhard," she said, "the direction has changed throughout the entire network."
Above them, the Black Moon’s influence spread farther across Marvello.
