The morning rain was falling in thin grey sheets across the southern perimeter of District Four as Fin led the team down the canal road.

The damp smell of sea salt faded as the bitter chemical stench of sulfur and burning coal rolled across the canal road. Dirty brown river water rushed through the drainage sluice gates below the embankment while giant municipal pump houses shook the ground.

Low brick factories and rusted pipe bridges crowded along both sides of the canal, shutting out the morning sky with tangled networks of iron.

"District Two never smells any better," Ruby said, adjusting the broad leather strap of her tower shield across her left shoulder, "every time we come up here, it feels like chewing on copper wire."

"The whole place runs on sulfuric acid and waste filters," Nila noted, resting her hands lightly on the hilts of her twin daggers, "Genesis picked the perfect corner of the city to hide their cooling lines."

Nim walked ahead along the damp stone retaining wall, her feline ears turning toward every grinding piston in the nearby pumping station.

She dropped onto one knee beside a rusted storm drain, brushing away wet moss with her small, scarred fingers.

A series of three chalk marks showed on the wet stone, shaped like split fishhooks pointing down toward the lower sluice gates.

"The courier runners use this path," Nim said, pointing down the narrow stone steps that led directly to the swollen culvert, "the marks mean an armored wagon passes here before the tide turns."

"Good eyes, Nim," Fin said, stepping up beside her and looking down into the foaming brown water that churned through the culvert, "how fast does that current run?"

"Fast enough to sweep a grown man down into the harbor screens," Nim warned, glancing up at him with wide green eyes, "the pressure inside that drainage pipe could crack an F-rank porter’s ribs."

"Good thing I am not an F-rank porter anymore," Fin replied with a quick grin, resting his hand against the smooth hickory handle of his hatchet.

He stepped off the lowest step and waded straight into the rushing culvert without pausing to roll up his trousers.

The swift brown water surged against his waist with violent force, but the moment the cold river touched his skin, Depth Hydro-Locomotion flared to life.

Instead of fighting the roaring water, the liquid seemed to part around his legs like soft silk, offering zero resistance against his forward movement.

He took a step against the raging current, feeling the water push him forward instead of shoving him back toward the harbor grates.

"Well, look at that," Fin laughed aloud, taking three rapid strides through the chest-deep water as easily as walking down a dry wooden hallway, "the water is doing half the work for me."

"You look like an overgrown river otter," Ruby called down from the upper walkway, shaking her head with a faint smile, "do not get cocky and swim all the way to the ocean."

"I am not swimming anywhere," Fin said, turning around in the churning current and balancing on the slick stone floor with perfect footing, "I am just enjoying the fact that Genesis paid good money to build me a personal highway."

"Quiet," Nila hissed from the shadow of the pipe bridge, raising her right hand with two fingers extended, "the courier engine is coming over the crest."

The deep, chugging rumble of an engine vibrated through the wet stone embankment as a four-wheeled armored transport rolled down the canal road.

Reinforced armor plates were bolted across the transport’s front radiator grille, while four armed sentries in dull grey armor marched in tight formation along its sides.

Each sentry carried a compact pneumatic flechette launcher strapped across their chest, their helmets glowing with faint red sensor visors.

Fin activated Threat Sense, letting his perception reach out through the falling rain toward the slow-moving transport.

The sentries registered as low C-rank synthetic constructs, their artificial mana cores humming with steady, mechanical rhythm.

In the front cab, two frightened civilian drivers held the steering wheel with trembling hands, their plain cotton shirts soaked in nervous sweat.

"Civilians are driving the cab," Fin said through the short-range radio link, keeping his voice low against the noise of the rushing water, "we leave the drivers alone and take down the guards."

"I have the wheels," Nila answered, her body dropping low against the bridge railing, "moving now."

Nila dropped from the overhead bridge like a falling leaf, landing directly on the armored roof of the moving transport with zero sound.

She drew two thin puncturing daggers and drove them straight through the rear wheel hubs, severing the high-pressure hydraulic brake lines in a single strike.

A loud hiss of pressurized fluid sprayed across the wet road, and the truck skidded sideways with a sharp shriek of tearing rubber.

"Ambush!" the lead escort shouted, raising his pneumatic launcher toward the roof as red warning runes flashed across his faceplate.

Ruby vaulted over the stone embankment, slamming the reinforced base of her tower shield into the cobblestones with a deafening crash.

A burst of needle darts slammed against her reinforced barrier, sparking harmlessly off the protective face without piercing the metal.

"My turn," Fin muttered, launching himself straight out of the rushing culvert with explosive force.

Depth Hydro-Locomotion launched him from the water like a skipping stone, carrying him ten yards through the air before his feet touched the damp stones of the road.

He did not even need to activate Overclock, because his baseline Agility was more than enough to overwhelm the sluggish synthetic guards.

The nearest construct swung around with its flechette rifle, but Fin closed the distance before the weapon could level.

He stepped inside the construct’s reach and delivered a clean, upward blow with the reverse spike of his hatchet.

The hardened spike punched straight through the construct’s right elbow joint, shattering the brass gears and severing the artificial tendon wires in a shower of sparks.

The weapon clattered to the wet cobblestones, and Fin spun on his heel, driving his elbow into the construct’s chest plate.

The impact sent the guard crashing backward into the stone retaining wall, its red visor flickering out as its internal power cell shut down.

The second construct charged him with an electrified shock baton, swinging the crackling weapon toward Fin’s neck in a vicious horizontal sweep.

Fin ducked under the humming blue arc with effortless grace, feeling the wind of the blade pass two inches above his hair.

He brought the flat side of his hatchet down across the construct’s knee joint, snapping the synthetic hinge with a sharp, sickening crack.

The guard collapsed onto the road with a mechanical groan, its remaining arm flailing uselessly against the wet stone pavement.

Across the truck, Ruby stepped forward with a powerful thrust of her spear, catching the third construct in the shoulder and pinning it against the transport’s steel fender.

Before the last escort could fire its weapon toward Ruby’s flank, Nila dropped from the cab roof and drove both daggers into its spinal power conduit.

The final construct shuddered violently, dropping its weapon onto the cobblestones before slumping forward into the puddle.

Thick grey steam hissed from the ruptured cooling lines while the armored transport settled heavily onto its cracked rubber tires. Cold river water splashed against the stone embankment below as the distant bells of the municipal harbor rang through the rain.

The two civilian drivers inside the cab were staring through the cracked windshield with wide, terrified eyes, their hands raised high in surrender.

Fin walked up to the driver’s window, resting his hatchet casually over his right shoulder as he looked inside with a calm expression.

"You two work for the municipal freight guild?" Fin asked, tapping the glass with a knuckle.

"Y-yes, sir!" the older driver stammered, scrambling to unlatch the door with shaking hands, "they forced us at gunpoint in District Six, they said they would burn our families if we did not drive the load!"

"The keys are on the dash," the younger driver choked out, tears running through the soot on his cheeks, "take whatever you want, just please let us walk away!"

"Nobody is going to hurt you," Fin said, pulling the door open and motioning for them to climb down, "the municipal tram station is three blocks east along the high embankment."

"Take the tram straight into District One," Ruby added, lowering her shield and pointing toward the safety of the eastern avenue, "tell the station guard that Coastal Marshal Fin sent you, and they will give you hot food and dry clothes."

The two drivers scrambled down from the high cab, bowing three times in frantic gratitude before sprinting down the empty road toward the tram station.

"Good riddance to bad company," Nila said, walking around to the rear cargo doors and testing the sturdy brass padlock with the tip of her dagger.

Fin stepped up beside her, raising his hatchet and striking the padlock with the hardened reverse spike.

The brass lock sheared in half with a crisp ring, and the rear doors swung open into the dark cargo bed.

Inside the covered bed sat twelve tall, pressurized cylinders of glowing amber nutrient fluid, each one secured with steel chains and cooling hoses.

"Synthetic growth nutrient," Ruby murmured, climbing into the bed and wiping a smudge of condensation off the nearest cylinder, "the same stuff we found on Platform Tartarus."

Fin reached into the cab’s glove box, pulling out a leather-bound shipping manifest stamped with red wax seals.

He flipped the manifest open, scanning the printed serial numbers and destination codes under the grey daylight.

Fin glanced at the blue translucent screen floating before his eyes, confirming that the convoy interception milestone awarded one million five hundred thousand experience points.

The blue numbers settled into his interface, raising his current total to forty-two million two hundred thousand toward the sovereign threshold while his attributes held steady.

"Look at the delivery routing," Fin said, holding the open manifest out so Ruby and Nila could see the inked stamp on the final page.

"Facility Zero, Sub-level Three," Ruby read aloud, her eyes narrowing with cold fury, "Central Incubator Hall."

"And look at the subject column," Nila whispered, pointing her finger at the printed header above twelve rows of empty checkboxes, "Batch Six Prototype Vessels."

"They are already growing the next batch," Fin said, closing the manifest with a sharp snap and storing it directly into his subspace, "they are trying to replace every child we took off Tartarus."

"Not while we have the front door key," Ruby said, planting the butt of her spear firmly against the cargo bed.

Nim climbed down from the retaining wall, stepping lightly across the wet cobblestones to join them by the rear of the truck.

"The culvert gate behind us leads straight to Conduit 9," Nim reported, pointing back toward the churning drainage tunnel, "the maintenance passage is clear, but there are tripwires eighty meters inside."

"We will breach the gate tomorrow at midnight," Fin said, wiping the rain from his forehead and turning back toward the rushing water with a determined grin, "now let us get these cylinders dumped before the syndicate sends another wagon."
