SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 110: Triage in District Two
Exhaust fumes from four idling transport haulers drifted through the subterranean culvert while Bram led ten porters down the maintenance ramp.
Fluorescent emergency lanterns illuminated the approach as medical stretchers rattled softly against the grooved floor plates during their rapid descent.
Fin met the recovery team at the threshold of Sub-Level Three, gesturing toward the long rows of illuminated containment pods.
"How many haulers did you bring into the culvert?" Fin stepped out to meet Bram, wiping grease from his palms with a clean cloth.
"All four trucks are parked by the drainage dock," Bram wiped sweat from his brow, his broad shoulders filling the doorway. "Corin has three drivers holding the perimeter outside."
"Did Sefu find the trauma nurses from the clinic?" Fin gestured toward the long rows of illuminated glass vats.
"Three nurses came with us in the lead cab," Bram gestured toward the gurneys rolling down the ramp. "They brought thirty thermal blankets and portable oxygen tanks."
"We need all forty-eight pods disconnected without triggering line pressure drops," Fin adjusted his hatchet on his belt, leading the porters toward the southern bay.
"Maya has the master bypass running on the main console," Bram nodded with grim determination, signaling his logistics team forward. "Show us the first row."
"Start with the youngest ones in the southern bay," Fin pointed toward the lower row of acrylic cylinders where faint bubbles drifted through the glowing fluid.
Maya looked up from the illuminated glass terminal, her fingers resting lightly across the master override levers.
"Southern bay bypass is active right now," Maya called out over the hiss of venting steam, keeping her eyes fixed on the pressure dials. "Fluid drains will cycle down in twelve seconds."
"Do the valves seal automatically when the lines detach?" Corin asked as he wheeled a folding cot up to the first vat.
"Every quick-disconnect port locks on spring tension," Maya confirmed, flipping a secondary toggle switch. "You can pull the suction needles the instant the amber fluid drains."
"Understood," Bram gripped the edge of the first glass cylinder, bracing himself to assist the medical staff. "Corin, take the lower valve clamps while I support their shoulders."
"Moving into position right now," Corin knelt beside the acrylic base, releasing the drainage petcock with a crisp metallic click. "Verify the battery packs on the portable respirators before we detach the main hoses."
"All four emergency power packs are sitting at full charge," nurse Marta called out from the head of the cot, adjusting her surgical mask. "The cables clip straight onto the gurney frames without loose wiring."
Fin walked along the row of acrylic vats, checking each fluid gauge as the amber liquid drained into the floor grates.
Working in synchronized pairs, the porters and nurses moved down the southern gallery to uncouple the life-support fittings.
Each dormant child was lifted gently from the draining vats, wrapped in wool blankets, and secured upon a padded stretcher.
No child cried or stirred, kept deeply asleep by the stabilizing synthetic nutrients circulating through their small veins.
Near the cargo blast door, Darek stood with his arms pressed tightly across his chest, staring at the row of gurneys.
His jaw twitched as each stretcher rolled past, his eyes fixed on the plastic fluid ports still taped to small wrists.
Fin walked over to the doorway, pulling a warm metal canteen of vegetable broth from his side satchel.
"Drink some of this broth, Darek," Fin unscrewed the cap and held the canteen out toward the shivering youth.
"I am not thirsty," Darek rasped, shaking his head slightly while his eyes remained locked on a sleeping girl’s face.
"Drink it anyway to keep your strength up," Fin pressed the canteen into the boy’s scarred fingers with quiet insistence. "You need something hot in your stomach."
"I was fifteen when they put me in one of those tubs," Darek whispered, staring down at the warm steam rising from the broth. "I remember the smell of that amber fluid, it tasted like copper and burned the back of your tongue for weeks."
"You are outside the glass now," Fin placed a steady hand on the youth’s arm, grounding him against the flood of memories, "and those forty-eight children are coming out alive today—you helped us break through their outer perimeter."
"I wanted to smash the tanks when we first walked in," Darek confessed, his voice catching in his throat as he lowered his head toward the floor. "I almost killed them in my rage."
"You held your ground instead," Fin spoke with calm reassurance, watching another stretcher roll past into the loading corridor, "and now every single one of them is going to wake up in a clean bed."
"Do you think they will remember their real names?" Darek asked, his eyes wide and vulnerable in the amber gloom.
"Some of them will," Fin nodded with a soft, confident smile. "And the ones who forgot will get the chance to choose new ones."
Darek unscrewed the cap of the canteen with trembling fingers, taking three slow, deliberate sips of the hot broth.
A subtle warmth returned to the youth’s cheeks as the savory liquid eased the lingering chill in his throat.
Across the central floor, Sefu walked beside nurse Marta, double-checking the pulse monitors attached to each transport cot.
"Every child in this batch has stable vitals," Sefu reported, walking up to Fin with a clipboard tucked beneath his arm. "Orson has the Pine Street shelter prepped with forty-eight beds and clean flannel sheets."
"How is the transport route through District Two?" Fin turned toward the older custodian, keeping his voice low and professional.
"Clear as an open highway," Sefu replied with a satisfied nod, tapping his municipal driver permit. "Talla filed an emergency medical transfer order with the city constabulary, so nobody will stop our convoy."
"Good," Fin watched the last stretcher of the southern bay being loaded onto Bram’s hydraulic lift platform. "Get them into the trucks before any corporate observers catch wind of our movement."
"The Iron Dogs will guard the convoy with their lives," Bram promised as he swung the rear cargo doors shut with a solid clatter. "We will see you back at Pine Street."
The heavy transport trucks rumbled to life, their diesel engines purring smoothly as the convoy rolled up the drainage ramp toward the streets above.
Fin watched the glowing red taillights disappear into the ascending gloom, feeling a profound wave of relief settle across his weary shoulders.
A bright blue interface window expanded smoothly across his vision, chiming with crisp, musical clarity as the extraction registered.

His experience total climbed smoothly to sixty-seven million two hundred thousand toward the two hundred and fifty million required for Rank B.
The subterranean drainage dock fell quiet as the mechanical echoes of the diesel engines faded into distant surface rumble.
"The children are safe on their way to Pine Street," Ruby exhaled a long breath, resting the rim of her shield against the floor. "Now what do we do about those lower vaults?"
"Maya found another sealed hatch in the basement," Fin adjusted his hatchet on his belt, gesturing toward the far service staircase descending into the dark. "Sub-Level Four is still active, and we are not leaving until this whole facility is cleared."
"Then let us finish the job," Nila slid her throwing daggers into her belt loops, her eyes gleaming with sharp focus. "We clear the basement before noon."
