SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 114: The Unbolted Neck
Morning light washed across the courtyard of the Pine Street shelter as autumn sparrows chirped along the corrugated eaves.
Inside the quiet clinic room, Fin stood beside the head of the cot with his hands steadying the cylinder.
Maya leaned over Darek’s neck with the three-pronged key, carefully aligning the notched teeth with the internal pins.
Ruby held a basin of warm saline water, ready to sponge away any trapped residue the moment the seal opened.
"The secondary tumbler is resisting," Maya adjusted the tension on the key handle, her brow furrowing with concentration.
"Take your time," Fin kept his grip firm on the outer collar rim, preventing the metal from pinching raw skin. "Do not force the cylinder until the pins align."
"Almost there," Maya eased the tool counter-clockwise until a sharp metallic click echoed through the quiet room.
A sudden hiss of escaping pressure vented from the seam, followed by the dull snap of released locking springs.
The hinged collar separated into two curved halves, falling away from Darek’s throat with a hollow metallic thud onto the tray.
Darek drew a sharp, ragged breath, his trembling hands rising instantly to touch the bare skin of his neck.
Four years of pressurized metal left deep purple indentations and raised surgical scars around his throat.
Doctor Varek stepped forward immediately, dipping a soft cotton swab into a jar of soothing herbal salve.
"Lie back and keep your chin up," Doctor Varek instructed gently, dabbing the cooling ointment across the inflamed skin. "The tissue will take several days to breathe naturally again."
Darek stared up at the whitewashed ceiling planks in stunned disbelief, his fingertips tracing the smooth linen bandage.
"It is off," Darek touched the clean linen wrap, fresh tears pooling at the corners of his eyes. "The machine is really gone."
"You are a free man," Fin smiled, setting a fresh glass of water onto the bedside stand. "Take all the time you need to rest."
By mid-afternoon, the autumn warmth chased the morning chill from the cobblestones outside the shelter entrance.
Darek stepped out through the double doors, dressed in clean denim trousers and a soft grey wool shirt provided by the clinic.
He paused on the threshold, raising a hand to shield his eyes as bright sunlight illuminated his face.
Across the gravel yard, a dozen neighborhood children from Shelter Group 3B were kicking a stuffed rag ball between chalked goal lines.
Their high-pitched laughter and energetic shouts echoed off the perimeter walls of the surrounding tenement blocks.
Two little girls wearing woolen caps chased the rolling ball toward the garden steps, giggling as they tumbled into the grass.
Darek watched them with wide, mesmerized eyes, his fingers repeatedly touching the clean bandage wrapped around his neck.
Fin walked over from the supply shed, wiping cedar shavings from his shirt as he carried a crate of fruit.
He reached into the top layer and pulled out a freshly peeled orange, tossing the sweet fruit through the air.
"Catch," Fin called out with an easy grin, leaning against the timber railing of the porch.
Darek reacted with swift, natural reflex, plucking the fruit out of the air before it could touch the ground.
"Thank you," Darek looked down at the juicy segments in his palm, splitting the fruit into two neat halves.
"How does the throat feel in the open air?" Fin sat down on the top wooden step, looking out at the yard.
"Light," Darek chewed on a sweet orange slice, looking down at his free hands with genuine wonder. "Every time I turn my head, I expect the metal edges to bite into my jaw, but there is nothing there."
"You will get used to the freedom," Fin watched Sefu referee the children’s match with a whistle. "It takes a few days for your muscles to remember how to relax."
"I do not think I ever knew how to relax," Darek confessed, sitting down on the step beside Fin. "Before they grabbed me, I lived in the alley behind the protein warehouse, stealing bread crusts from delivery carts."
"I worked in that warehouse," Fin chuckled softly, shaking his head at the strange twists of fate. "I used to see kids sleeping behind the ventilation blowers on freezing nights."
"I was one of those kids," Darek looked down at his scarred palms, watching the skin settle smoothly over his knuckles. "I never had a family, and after the laboratory took me, I only had a number."
"You have a name now," Fin turned to look directly into the youth’s dark, clear eyes.
"My name is Darek," the youth whispered, speaking his true name aloud for the first time in four years. "My mother called me Darek before the fever took her."
"Good to meet you, Darek," Fin extended his open hand toward the boy with warmth and respect. "Welcome to Halden House."
Darek looked at Fin’s calloused palm for a long moment before gripping it with firm, sincere strength.
Fin noticed the faint ridges along Darek’s forearms, where the grafted bone blades lay dormant beneath the skin.
"How do the blades respond without the collar restricting your channels?" Fin nodded toward the youth’s wrist, curious to see the result.
Darek paused, taking a slow breath as he focused his intent on his right arm without any visible strain.
With a soft, fluid click, a single bone blade slid smoothly from his forearm, extending three inches past his knuckles.
There was zero scalding steam, zero burning pain, and zero purple discoloration spreading across his flesh.
"It feels like part of my own arm now," Darek flexed his fingers as the blade retracted instantly, staring at his unburned skin. "The poison in the core is gone."
"Jolly’s saline flush stabilized the mineral balance," Fin nodded approvingly, pleased by the youth’s newfound control. "From now on, you train your body naturally instead of letting corporate machines burn your cells."
"I want to help defend this place," Darek stated, his gaze shifting toward the children playing safely in the yard. "Krell’s associates are still out there in the city, and they will try to rebuild what we destroyed."
"We will be ready for them," Fin promised, his grip tightening in mutual acknowledgment of their shared fight. "You rest today, and tomorrow we start your integration into our auxiliary defense vanguard."
Ruby walked out onto the porch, carrying two ceramic mugs of steaming peppermint tea and a plate of warm biscuits.
"Jolly just finished auditing the medical inventories," Ruby announced, handing one of the mugs to Darek with a bright smile. "She authorized three months of nutritional stipends for our new recruit."
"She runs a tight ship," Fin accepted the second mug as steam curled into the afternoon air, chuckling softly.
"She told me that if you track mud across her clean rugs, she will dock your pay," Ruby warned with a wink toward Darek.
"I will take my shoes off at the door every single time," Darek promised earnestly, taking a grateful sip of the sweet tea.
Laughter rippled through the courtyard as the autumn sun bathed the masonry in warm, amber light.
A soft chime sounded in Fin’s mind, displaying his verified status overview without disrupting the quiet moment.

Fin rested his hands on his knees, watching the children score another goal as twilight slowly settled across the district.
