SSS Ranked Awakening: All My Skills Are at Level 100
Chapter 681: Wisdom He Never Intended
Chapter 681: Wisdom He Never Intended
[MoonWhoEatsHerself: The first teaching comes from the Stillwater commentaries. It requires the boundary to be consolidated and closed before influence is extended beyond it. Otherwise, what passes through is lost, and each attempt worsens the instability.]
[My lineage’s transmission instructs me to release the boundary to complete the expansion. A held boundary cannot expand. The wording is explicit.]
[If I release it prematurely, I risk losing the preparation. If I continue holding it, I cannot complete the process.]
Leon read the explanation twice.
He understood boundaries. He had repaired spatial layers, maintained passages, and worked with the limits of his own dimensional world. What he did not understand was the particular structure Moon’s lineage cultivated—or what either author meant by closing and releasing it.
Those words could describe several different operations.
He read the messages aloud for Loriel.
"Do you recognize the teachings?" she asked.
"I’ve never heard of them."
"Could she explain the terms?"
"Probably. Then she’d wonder why I needed them explained."
Loriel drew her knees closer beneath her robe.
Leon looked back at the messages.
Moon had been cautious. Nothing in her account sounded foolish. She had valuable preparation to protect, two credible sources giving apparently contradictory instructions, and no confidence that acting would improve matters.
He knew that feeling rather well.
The difference was that she expected him to know the answer.
[MoonWhoEatsHerself: Neither source is one I can dismiss. I have compared the relevant passages repeatedly. Both describe the boundary I am preparing to extend.]
Leon considered asking for the complete texts, but that would only provide him with a larger quantity of things he did not understand.
Start with what she thinks they mean.
He composed a question.
[Elemental Paragon: Tell me why you believe they describe the same step.]
His finger moved against his knee as he sent it. There was no keyboard, no physical action required, yet he caught himself doing it anyway.
Loriel watched his face.
"What did you say?"
He told her.
"Do you think that’s the mistake?"
"I think I need her to explain more."
Moon’s reply appeared.
[Both address the boundary before its expansion. The first requires it to remain closed while influence is gathered and directed beyond it. The second requires its release.]
[My prepared influence must cross that boundary for the extension to become stable. Therefore, both requirements appear to govern the same operation.]
Leon read the answer aloud, more slowly this time.
There might be something in that distinction. Or he might simply be arranging unfamiliar words into an explanation he wanted to hear.
He did not trust himself to choose.
Moon sent another message before he could respond.
[The first passage does not actually say "before its expansion." That is my description.]
Loriel turned toward him.
A further message followed.
[It says "before influence is extended beyond it." I have treated those as equivalent.]
[I would like to verify the preceding section.]
Leon stayed quiet.
Several minutes passed. Outside, a cart rattled along the street, followed by an argument about who had left empty crates in the road.
He envied both participants. Their disagreement probably involved words whose meaning everybody understood.
Then Moon returned.
[The preceding section concerns establishing a boundary capable of retaining the gathered influence. The extension described there is a controlled test of whether that preparation holds.]
[The lineage transmission begins after that condition has been achieved. Its release is not the opening Stillwater warns against. The consolidated structure must remain intact while its fixed limit is relinquished.]
Leon frowned and read the messages again.
He could follow the distinction now, although he would not have trusted himself to perform either operation.
One text explained how to establish something capable of expansion. The other assumed the preparation was complete and described using it. Similar language had led Moon to compare instructions that belonged at different points.
[MoonWhoEatsHerself: They are consecutive.]
The next message took longer.
[I kept returning to the two commands because I believed that was where they disagreed. I should have returned to what each author required before giving them.]
Leon let out a breath.
Loriel touched his wrist.
"What happened?"
He explained as faithfully as he could.
"She thinks she was comparing preparation with the actual expansion. One of the words didn’t mean quite the same thing in both texts."
"Is she certain?"
As though answering her, Moon sent another message.
[I must examine my preparation against the complete Stillwater conditions. I have tested its stability, but not by the sequence described here.]
[There may still be deficiencies. At least I now know what I need to check.]
That sounded considerably better than an immediate attempt to break through.
Leon waited, unwilling to interrupt while she was finally making sense of her own problem.
[You did not choose a teaching for me.]
His stomach tightened.
[You asked why I had placed them in opposition. None of the people I consulted asked that. I showed them the same two passages, and we all continued arguing from my comparison.]
[Thank you for making me explain it.]
Leon leaned back.
Making you explain it was the only thing I could do.
He had spent the conversation trying to buy enough time to understand the question. She had used that time to find an answer.
He could be pleased about that without pretending he understood her cultivation.
After a moment, he sent the one piece of advice he trusted.
[Elemental Paragon: Verify the conditions before you act. Understanding the distinction does not establish that your preparation meets it.]
[MoonWhoEatsHerself: I will. Thank you, my Lord.]
Leon closed the private exchange.
"She’s going to check everything," he told Loriel. "Before trying anything."
"Good."
He rubbed his palms against his trousers and discovered they were damp.
"That could have gone badly."
"But it didn’t," Loriel said.
"This time."
She accepted that without arguing.
A new message appeared in the group.
[MoonWhoEatsHerself: Honored Paragon, thank you for your guidance. I will not share the details of our consultation. Your question showed me that I had been comparing two stages of a process as though they were competing instructions.]
[The Ninth Silence: An assumption carried into every rereading. Those are difficult to notice from inside your own reasoning.]
[Sablewright: Especially when everyone you ask accepts the comparison.]
[Vaunt of the Chained Choir: He could have given you the conclusion. Instead, he made you find where you had gone wrong.]
Leon read the exchange to Loriel.
Her mouth twitched.
"Don’t," he said.
"I haven’t said anything."
"You’re about to."
She smiled, then squeezed his arm.
"You did help her."
"I asked because I had nothing useful to tell her."
"And she found something useful while answering."
Leon looked back at Moon’s thanks.
He had expected the money to be the best part of opening the chat. He was still delighted about the money, but knowing she would not have to sit over the same two passages tomorrow felt unexpectedly good.
That did not make him qualified to guide her.
"I’m not answering the next one so quickly," he said.
Loriel glanced at him.
"Good."
The communication plaque chimed before he could decide whether she had agreed too readily.
Ji’s reply had arrived.
Leon rose and picked it up.
Evidence received and reviewed. Elder Ruan confirms the correspondence between the tool samples. Preserve the original recording.
You have permission to pursue the White Reed Crossing delivery under the existing terms of your assignment. Establish a daily reporting window before departure and report immediately upon contact.
The recording identifies a Qiao connection. It does not identify the Hollow Steward or authorize action against the clan as a whole. Keep Palace involvement concealed.
If the escort exceeds what your household can safely handle, observe and report. I will send what is needed.
Use your judgment, disciple.
He read the last sentence again.
After an afternoon pretending to possess wisdom beyond comprehension, receiving a sensible instruction from somebody who knew him was almost restful.
"Permission?" Loriel asked.
"Yes. We leave in the morning."
Only hours had passed since his report. The four-day route still left time to examine the crossing before the delivery, provided they did not waste tomorrow.
"Tell Vyra we have approval," Leon said. "I’ll go through the conditions with Seraphine when she returns. We need to speak to Qingyue before fixing the route."
Loriel began securing her case.
"And these?"
"Bring them."
"She needs different soil," Loriel said, checking one last cutting. "The merchant told me she preferred dry ground."
"She?"
"The plant."
"I understood that part."
Loriel gave him a brief smile and fastened the lid.
At the door, she looked back.
"I meant what I said."
Leon knew which conversation she meant.
"I know."
She left, and he began composing the acknowledgment to Ji.
A private notification opened beside it.
[Lord of Illusion and Mystery: You have been absent for some time. What kept you so occupied?]
Leon’s hand stopped above the plaque.
He knew that name.
She had questioned him before, politely enough that he could never decide how much suspicion lay beneath the interest. There had been no groveling, no frightened gratitude, and no assumption that he would dislike being asked.
She really was a Lord of the Universe.
Leon reread the message, hoping to find something in its tone that told him whether she had heard the rumor.
There was nothing. Just an ordinary question from someone who might understand every subject he could pretend to have been studying.
Ji’s authorization remained in his hand.
For one brief, tempting moment, he considered answering honestly.
I finally reached Early Qi Refinement.
He closed his eyes.
That would certainly give her something to think about.
