SSS-Ranked Talent: Endless Adaptation
Chapter 50: Subterranean grids
Deep within the pitch black lower subterranean grids beneath the outer rings, the freezing mountain air was replaced by a heavy, stagnant stench of rust and rotting groundwater. The damp stone walls of the abandoned iron reservoirs dripped continuously, the echoing drops providing a slow rhythm to the muffled, horrifying scene unfolding inside the central vault.
Mina lay on the stone floor, her hands and feet bound by thick restriction cords her soft, unrefined linen tunic was torn and stained from the ordeal, evidence of the confrontation that had led to her capture.
Standing around her in a loose circle were her five High-blood classmates. They stood tall beneath the vaulted ceiling, their immaculate white uniforms with gold trim completely clean, contrasting sharply with the grim environment of the reservoir. They looked down at her with cold arrogance.
"Look at this," one of the noble students scoffed. "You actually thought that freak could shield you from us? Your little circle got lucky in the tournament, but you are out of options now."
Another classmate stepped closer, a low laugh rippling through the group. "After that freak is dealt with tonight, the hierarchy will be restored. Such talent is entirely wasted on you lessers anyway."
The leader of the five first-years stepped forward, looking down at the captive. He reached out, grabbing Mina by the hair to force her to look up, asserting his dominance over the situation. Mina trembled, her eyes wide with apprehension as she faced her captors.
The leader sneered, leaning in closer to intimidate her further, before releasing his grip and letting her fall back against the stone floor. Mina remained still, her quiet breaths echoing off the damp iron pipes.
"Let her go."A smooth voice echoed out from the darkness of the rear tunnel.
Darian Calagher stepped slowly out from the heavy shadows, a lazy smile playing across his face. He crossed his arms over his chest, looking down at the first-years with an air of effortless supremacy.
"I believe the instructions were to keep her intact until the vermin arrives," Darian said, his tone carrying a calm weight that instantly made the first-years stiffen. "We are executing a strategic plan, not an undisciplined brawl."
The first-years stepped back into the perimeter lines, their posture remaining rigid.
Darian slowly walked over, his boots crunching softly against the wet grit. He reached into his pocket, took out a clean handkerchief, and knelt down beside her. With meticulous precision, he wiped the dust from her face, his expression completely serene.
"Your only mistake was getting close to Thomas," Darian murmured softly, his eyes locking onto her gaze with a chilling calm. "He is disrupting the natural order. If you had not been associated with him, you would be perfectly safe in your barracks tonight."
He paused, folding the handkerchief with a precise movement as his voice dropped. "But now, you are an asset we must secure. We cannot leave any untied threads for the Academy Council to trace back to our houses."
Suddenly, the serene composure on Darian’s face shifted into a cold, terrifying smile, reflecting a calculated malice.
"I cannot wait to have my fun with you," Darian whispered, his grin widening as he looked at her. "But first I must make sure that your little boyfriend is dead. Once he is out of the picture, every lesser’s status will be completely reset under our terms."
Mina shuddered, the weight of the threat clear. She attempted to shift against the cords, her voice cracking as she spoke. "Please... just leave me out of this," she said. "I won’t say anything to the instructors. Just let me go."
Darian’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of absolute indifference. He stood up smoothly, his posture perfectly straight. Without a word, he delivered a sharp kick to her side, sending a harsh reminder of her captivity.
Mina gasped from the impact, curling inward as she recovered her breath. Darian looked down at her with complete indifference, turned his back, and walked toward the shadows.
...
Hours later
Thomas walked calmly down the dark, descending stone steps of the lower subterranean grids.
The heavy air of the deep tunnels smelled faintly of ancient mold and rusted copper conduits. Right beside him, Julian stepped forward into the shadows with his head held high, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the dim light of the distant torches. The mysterious year two senior with the vibrant violet hair was nowhere to be found, having completely vanished from their side the moment they reached the upper iron entrance of the lower rings.
Thomas kept his mask perfectly smooth as glass, his dark eyes looking straight ahead into the pitch-black corridor.
The moment their boots crunched against the wet grit at the entrance of the central vault, three of their classmates aggressively stepped out from the darkness. One of the noble students stepped directly in front of Thomas, his face twisted into an arrogant scowl as he roughly searched Thomas for any hidden weapons or communication relics. Finding absolutely nothing but empty pockets, the classmate let out a short, condescending laugh and stepped back, allowing him inside the damp perimeter.
Thomas walked deeper into the iron vault, his sharp gaze cutting cleanly through the suffocating grey gloom.
He instantly spotted Mina. She lay bound on the wet stone floor near the heavy drainage pipes, her hands and feet tied by thick restriction cords. Seeing her curled inward in such a battered state, a sudden, heavy wave of unrefined focus surged through Thomas’s muscle fibers. Without a single word, he immediately shifted his weight onto his heels, intending to rush straight to her side to tear the cords away.
But before his boots could even take two rapid strides across the wet pavement, the leader of the first-years violently lunged out from behind a massive iron pillar. Activating his combat talent at full core capacity, the noble wound his leg back and launched a devastating, lightning-fast kinetic kick aimed directly at Thomas’s unprotected temple, the sheer force of the displacement whistling sharply through the air currents..
Deep inside the dark of his conscious mind, the cold, translucent blue text of the system interface violently flared to life beneath his eyes, warning him of the oncoming trajectory a microsecond before impact.
[ CRITICAL SYSTEM ALERT: INSTANT KINETIC DISPLACEMENT ]
* Vector: Right Lateral Quadrant / 0.4 Seconds to Impact
* Directive: Reposition 3 Inches Left / Shift Weight to Low Pivot
Thomas didn’t try to deploy a block, and he didn’t use his senior shielding technique. Guided perfectly by the rapid system calculations, he subtly tilted his upper torso and dropped his shoulder, positioning his physical vessel to evade the devastating attack by the absolute split of a hair.
The noble’s heavy boot sliced through the empty space an inch away from Thomas’s spectacles, the sheer wind pressure of the missed strike kicking up a sudden cloud of grey dust behind them.
