Star Ship Girl Era: My Shipgirls Are Too Overpowered

Chapter 388: Return Back To Crownward March

  • Next Chapter

The next morning began with fewer alarms than Aurelian expected.

That alone made it feel unusual.

Sanctuary Ardent’s shields were still being repaired, the western launch area remained partly closed, and hundreds of newly returned survivors were filling the medical and residential levels, but nothing had gone wrong overnight.

No Compact fleet appeared.

No scout reached the system.

No Alliance officer discovered another reason to argue about ownership.

For once, the reports waiting for Aurelian were mostly about work that had actually been completed.

He sat in the temporary command center with Astra while Eirenne brought up the overnight summary.

"The captured Compact ships reached Helion Bastion Twelve without incident," she said. "Meridian has started separating them by condition."

"How many are worth keeping?"

"Eight are in good enough condition for immediate secondary service after inspection. Eleven require moderate repair. The rest are better used for components, training, or reserve hulls."

That matched Aurelian’s expectations.

He had never wanted to fill the important parts of his fleet with whatever ships happened to fall into his hands.

Astra, Solenne, Lysara, Rhoswen, and the others were valuable because they were powerful, reliable, and worth investing in.

Random Compact warships did not meet that standard.

But patrol ships did not need to be exceptional.

Neither did escort ships protecting cargo routes far from the front.

"Keep the best eight intact," Aurelian said. "Helion can use them for local defense once crews are trained. The damaged ships stay under Meridian until she decides whether repair is worth the material."

"And the crews?"

"Not Compact prisoners."

Eirenne nodded.

Aurelian had no intention of putting recently captured personnel back aboard armed vessels and hoping loyalty appeared by itself.

The Crownward March would need its own crews.

That was another problem that would take time.

The civilian council at Sanctuary Ardent had already begun identifying people with naval, engineering, logistics, and technical backgrounds among the awakened population.

Some had served the old Vhaloric Directorate. Others had only civilian experience but could be trained.

Helion Bastion Twelve also had awakened personnel who understood old fleet systems.

Between those populations, Larkspur Haven, the Arcturus support teams, and people already joining the March, Aurelian finally had enough manpower to start thinking beyond individual shipgirls.

Not enough for a huge fleet.

Enough to start building one properly.

Eirenne changed the display.

"The three neutral Compact positions have maintained their agreement. No fuel or military supplies have moved toward Drann since yesterday."

"What about the other two?"

"One requested the same terms during the night. The last has not responded."

Astra looked toward the final marker.

"Military?"

"Mostly mining and freight," Eirenne said. "Its local commander may simply be waiting to see what happens."

Aurelian left it alone.

He did not need every settlement in the region to swear loyalty to him.

Neutrality was useful.

Silence was useful too, as long as it stayed that way.

Saevor Drann had concentrated most of his remaining strength deeper inside Compact territory, exactly as expected.

Scouts showed more defensive movement around his important systems, but there was still no sign of another attack toward the Crownward March.

That gave Aurelian what he wanted most.

Time.

He opened the wider map.

Sanctuary Ardent.

Larkspur Haven.

Helion Bastion Twelve.

The Mournveil routes between them.

The hidden paths already mapped by Lysara.

The growing settlements and supply points beginning to turn those separate places into one connected territory.

A month earlier, the Crownward March had still felt like a collection of useful positions held together by secrecy and Aurelian’s fleet.

That was starting to change.

Larkspur Haven was recovering from the Kharov attack and biological disaster.

Helion was producing equipment again.

Sanctuary Ardent had population, medical systems, industrial assets, and enough surviving infrastructure to become an important center in its own right.

The March now needed to connect those strengths instead of chasing another battle.

Aurelian expanded the current development schedule.

"Move the first Continuity Vault fabrication line to Helion as planned. The second stays here."

Eirenne updated the order.

"Larkspur?"

"Construction frames and agricultural processors. Enough to speed up housing and food production without weakening Sanctuary Ardent."

"What about the third usable fabrication line?"

Aurelian considered that.

"Reserve it."

Astra glanced toward him.

"For what?"

"We don’t know yet."

Rhoswen entered the command center at exactly the wrong moment.

"That sounds suspiciously like waiting."

Aurelian looked toward her.

"You slept."

"I did."

"How long?"

"Enough."

Eirenne answered.

"Six hours and twelve minutes."

Rhoswen turned toward her.

"Nobody asked you."

Aurelian almost smiled.

Six hours was far better than he expected.

Rhoswen walked toward the tactical display and looked over the Compact positions.

"So Drann is still hiding?"

"He is defending."

"Same thing from here."

"He has enough ships to make attacking him expensive."

"That sounds more interesting."

"It is also why we are not doing it yet."

Rhoswen sighed but did not argue.

That was another improvement.

Astra looked toward the territory map again.

"If we are not attacking Drann, what is the fleet doing?"

That was the question Aurelian had been considering since the previous night.

His fleet needed time to repair.

Solenne needed to rebuild fighter strength.

The Thornwake sisters were still completing their own recovery.

Helion needed escorts.

Larkspur needed patrols.

Sanctuary Ardent needed protection.

But keeping every powerful ship near settled territory would eventually become wasteful.

The Crownward March had grown because Aurelian kept finding things other people overlooked.

He did not intend to stop exploring just because he had more territory now.

He only needed to do it more carefully.

Aurelian looked toward Eirenne.

"Bring up the recovered Mournveil records."

Several maps appeared.

Most came from Lysara’s old navigation data, Helion Bastion Twelve, Sanctuary Ardent, and the damaged historical records recovered from the Human Continuance Matrix.

One route extended farther beyond the known Mournveil corridors than the others.

Aurelian had noticed it before.

So had the Destiny System.

He had checked it privately during the night, long after everyone else left the command center.

The System hadn’t given him a complete map or an easy answer.

It had only confirmed that something useful still existed along one of the old Vhaloric routes.
