Chapter 264 The Calamity Fox
The corrupted beasts were soaking up massive amounts of DPS, turning the battle into a grueling, localized war of attrition.
"Dante!" Sera yelled over the guild comms, spotting his glowing gold armor. "The proxy is dead?"
"Jack is deleted," Dante confirmed smoothly, sidestepping a massive, corrupted hound and cleanly decapitating it with a single swing of the [Dawn-Breaker Blade]. "The Arch-Administrator's localized influence is severed. We just have to clean up the mess."
"That's easier said than done," Casanova groaned over the comms, punching a heavily armored Beast-Kin warrior into the lake. "They just keep coming! They aren't retreating!"
"They're mind-controlled," Dante reminded them. "They won't break morale until they're dead. Hold the line. I'm going to clear the center."
Dante didn't trigger [Phantom Waltz] or [Cyclone of Ruin]. He didn't want to use his standard AoE skills to slowly chip away at the massive horde. He had a brand new, highly specific tool he wanted to test.
He looked toward the densest, most heavily packed cluster of the corrupted army.
A massive phalanx of roughly twenty thousand heavily armored, corrupted Beast-Kin infantry was currently pushing aggressively against Garrick's [Spiteful Bulwark]. They were shoulder-to-shoulder, a solid wall of iron and dark magic, desperately trying to crack the red dome.
"Perfect," Dante whispered.
He triggered [Meteor Stride], teleporting directly above the massive phalanx, hovering fifty feet in the air.
He didn't draw [Voidsever]. He looked down at a single, relatively low-level corrupted spearman standing in the absolute dead center of the dense formation.
Dante pointed his dark purple gauntlet directly at the spearman.
[Skill Executed: Phoenix Fire Seed]
There was no massive, flashy casting animation. No localized explosion of light.
A tiny, almost imperceptible spark of dark red fire shot from Dante's fingertip. It traveled instantly, completely bypassing the physical armor of the targeted spearman, and embedded itself deep within the NPC's localized digital code.
The spearman didn't stagger. He didn't drop his weapon. He didn't take a single point of damage.
The [Phoenix Fire Seed] was completely dormant, waiting for the trigger.
Dante didn't drop back down to the ground. He raised his voice, amplifying it across the battlefield.
"Sovereign!" Dante called out. "Now!"
Victoria, hovering high above the jade pavilion in the center of the lake, heard the command.
The Fey Sovereign didn't hesitate. She had just survived an administrative deletion protocol, and she was furious. Her massive, stained-glass wings flared brilliantly, illuminating the entire sanctuary with intense, localized celestial light.
She raised her ancient wooden staff high above her head.
[Super-Divine Skill Executed: Ice and Snow 10,000 Condensing Kill]
The temperature across the entire battlefield violently plummeted.
A massive, localized blizzard erupted directly over the corrupted army. Millions of jagged, razor-sharp ice spears materialized in the air, instantly dropping like an apocalyptic rainstorm.
The ice spears didn't just deal raw damage. They aggressively flash-froze anything they touched.
The massive phalanx of twenty thousand Beast-Kin infantry was caught directly in the center of the blast. The ice spears slammed into their heavy iron armor, shredding their health bars and instantly encasing them in thick blocks of absolute-zero ice.
The spearman carrying the [Phoenix Fire Seed] took a direct hit from a massive ice shard.
[-45,000! OVERKILL!]
The spearman's health bar zeroed out instantly.
The condition was met.
The tiny, dormant spark of dark red fire buried in the spearman's code recognized the death flag.
The seed didn't just detonate. It completely, violently hijacked the Zenith Protocol's combat engine.
A massive, completely silent wave of dark red energy exploded outward from the dying spearman, aggressively expanding in a fifty-foot spherical radius.
The red wave washed over the thousands of frozen, heavily damaged Beast-Kin infantry packed tightly around the spearman.
The system interface violently hitched.
[Execution Mechanic Triggered: True Death.]
[Bypassing Immunities.]
There were no damage numbers.
Every single corrupted entity caught within the fifty-foot radius of the [Phoenix Fire Seed] detonation was instantaneously, flawlessly atomized.
They didn't explode into blue pixels. They didn't shatter into ice. They simply turned into incredibly fine, gray digital ash that drifted silently to the white sand.
But the chain reaction wasn't finished.
The explosion of True Death instantly zeroed out the health bars of thousands of enemies simultaneously.
Because Dante had cast the seed, the system registered the thousands of kills as his.
And because he was currently operating under Aura's massive, localized buffs, the system struggled to process the sheer, overwhelming cosmic weight of the interaction.
Dante landed lightly on the beach, watching the massive, smoking crater where the twenty-thousand-man phalanx had just been standing. The entire center of the corrupted army was completely gone.
"Holy..." Casanova whispered, dropping his fists and staring at the massive pile of gray ash. "Boss, what was that?"
"A seed," Dante replied smoothly.
Before anyone else could comment on the apocalyptic localized destruction, a soft, trembling voice echoed from the edge of the tree line.
"The Calamity Fox," the voice whispered.
Dante turned his head.
Standing near the edge of the battlefield, completely ignored by the fighting armies, was an ancient, incredibly frail NPC. He wore simple, unadorned white robes, and he leaned heavily on a twisted wooden staff.
[Entity Identified: Elder of Moonlight Lake]
[Faction: Sylvan Lorekeeper]
The Elder wasn't looking at Dante. He wasn't looking at the massive crater or the dying Sovereign.
His wide, awe-struck eyes were locked entirely on Aura, who was floating serenely above Dante's head, her nine starlight tails weaving gently in the air.
"I have not seen that form in two hundred thousand years," the Elder breathed, taking a slow, respectful step forward.
Dante frowned, stepping between the old man and his pet. "You know what she is?"
"I know the legends, Outworlder," the Elder said, bowing his head deeply. "She is a Doom Harbinger. An Apex Sprite. But in the ancient texts of the First Cycle, her kind was known by a different name. They were called the Calamity Foxes."
"Calamity Fox," Dante repeated, glancing up at Aura. The tiny silver sprite chimed happily, clearly enjoying the respectful tone of the NPC. "She doesn't look like a calamity. She mostly just heals people."
"That is exactly why they are terrifying," the Elder smiled, a faint, ancient expression of localized understanding. "The legends say a Calamity Fox accompanied the First Asura during his crusade against the Orthodox factions."
Dante went perfectly still.
Lin had a pet? The ghost in the Mists of Carnage hadn't mentioned a pet.
"They are not called Calamity Foxes because they summon meteors or destroy cities," the Elder explained softly, gesturing to the massive, completely unharmed army of Aegis Vanguard standing behind Dante. "They do not cause disasters directly. They bring 'Calamity' to the enemies of the system by making their allies utterly, mathematically unkillable."
The Elder looked up at Dante's glowing red eyes.
"To fight an army backed by a Calamity Fox is to fight a localized extinction event," the Elder stated. "You cannot kill them, and you cannot outlast them. You can only die."
Dante looked at Aura.
The tiny sprite puffed her cheeks out proudly, her silver eyes shining.
"You're a very good fox," Dante said softly.
The remaining corrupted Beast-Kin forces, having just witnessed twenty thousand of their own troops get instantly deleted by a single invisible explosion, completely broke.
The mind-control programming holding them together finally, entirely snapped under the weight of absolute, unadulterated terror.
They dropped their weapons. They abandoned their siege engines. They turned and fled into the dark, twisted trees of the Mirage Mire, desperate to escape the anomaly and his unkillable army.
The battle was over.
The Siege of Radiant Lake was officially broken.
Dante didn't chase the fleeing survivors. He had secured the sanctuary. He had saved the Sovereign.
He sheathed the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] and turned back to his squad.
"Alright," Dante called out, his voice echoing across the quiet beach. "The fighting is done. Pip, start vacuuming. Sera, get the logistics teams organized. We have a continent's worth of loot to haul back to the Emporium."
The silence that fell over Radiant Lake was profound.
The roaring battle cries, the deafening explosions of magical artillery, and the heavy, rhythmic marching of the corrupted Beast-Kin army completely ceased. The massive, hundred-thousand-strong force that had threatened to overwrite the sanctuary was entirely broken, fleeing desperately into the dark, twisted trees of the Mirage Mire.
Dante stood on the white sandy shore, surrounded by massive, smoking craters and mountains of dropped, high-tier loot.
He didn't activate [Phantom Waltz] to chase the routing survivors. The threat was neutralized. The localized deletion protocol had been successfully severed.
He looked across the lake toward the jade pavilion.
Sovereign Victoria was back on her feet, her stained-glass wings glowing with a renewed, vibrant celestial light. She was holding Chloe tightly, the young princess weeping with absolute relief. The sanctuary was safe.
"Boss!" Casanova yelled, jogging across the beach, careful not to step on the massive piles of glowing armor and gold coins. The flamboyant bard had dropped his [Titan's Physique], returning to his normal, skinny avatar. "They're gone! The whole army just shattered! We actually held the line!"
"You guys did the heavy lifting," Dante acknowledged, offering a rare, genuine smile. "The shield wall was flawless."
Garrick marched over, his rusty iron armor heavily dented but completely intact. He slapped his kite shield proudly. "My spite is infinite! They couldn't even scratch the paint!"
Lila and Sera arrived a moment later, looking completely exhausted but incredibly satisfied. Nyx stepped out of the shadows nearby, adjusting her dark glasses, her datapad already projecting massive, scrolling spreadsheets of localized inventory logistics.
Mei strolled up, casually resting the [God-Slaying Skillet] on her shoulder. Pip the dragon was currently flying frantic, erratic circles over the battlefield, shrieking with pure, unadulterated joy as he vacuumed thousands of silver coins into his tiny jaws.
"We are going to need a bigger vault," Nyx noted dryly, analyzing the sheer volume of dropped assets.
