Chapter 836: Chapter 833 Traditional Methods

"Then master, when do we start making soap?" Annie’s eyes were eager to try; she could hardly hold herself back.

"Right now. Let’s go to the laboratory," Lucas chuckled, leading the group toward the laboratory inside the castle.

On the way, he instructed Nicole, "Nicole, go fetch some clean plant ash, fresh water, lard, and an egg."

"Alright!" Nicole nodded, though she was a bit puzzled. Did making soap really require plant ash, lard, and an egg? She immediately arranged for people to collect these items.

"Eh, eh, eh? Master, does making soap require plant ash?" Annie asked, her eyes wide.

"You’ll know later," Lucas chuckled lightly. Even if he explained it now, Annie wouldn’t understand what it meant.

"Eh? Does it actually require lard? But isn’t oil originally sticky and greasy? How can it be made into soap?" Catherine and the others were confused.

Lucy and the others also looked eagerly at Lucas. Although they had doubts in their hearts, they chose to remain silent.

Tap, tap, tap...

Soon, the group arrived at the laboratory. Nicole had also gathered all the items and placed them on the table, while the girls surrounded it.

Lucas wore short sleeves and pants inside the castle, so he got straight to work. He took a jar, put the plant ash inside, poured in a certain amount of fresh water, and stirred it a few times with a wooden stick.

He handed the stick to the cat-eared girl and said, "Mina, you do the stirring. Don’t stop. If you get tired, switch with someone else."

"Okay," Mina took the wooden stick and began stirring.

"Nicole, bring over some dried flower petals," Lucas turned his head and instructed. Dried petals were necessary for making perfumes and cosmetics.

"Okay," Nicole turned and headed toward the cabinet.

She was very attentive to these things. From perfume all the way to eyebrow powder and rouge, it was evident how interested she was in them.

Soon, Nicole held three small jars in her hands, containing three different varieties of flower petals.

These petals had all been roasted. Fresh petals were placed over a charcoal stove to roast until all the moisture was dried out. This made them easy to preserve and also maximized the release of their fragrance.

Lucas took the dried petals Nicole brought over, crushed them into powder, and set them aside for later use.

He said to Catherine, "Get me some wood, and a carving knife."

"Okay," Catherine immediately trotted out to find the items.

"Ha..." Lucas shook his head in amusement. She could have just gone out and instructed a girl, yet she went to look for them herself.

Tap, tap...

A few minutes later...

Catherine returned hugging the items, handed them to Lucas, and asked, "Are these enough?"

"They are enough," Lucas took them and began carving patterns with the carving knife.

"Lucas, what are you doing?" Lucy asked curiously.

"Making molds for the soap," Lucas’s hands moved swiftly as he replied. "You guys can also try making a mold you like. We can use them when the soap is made."

"Eh? We can definitely do that." Lucy, Catherine, and the others’ eyes lit up, and they immediately started making them.

Carve, carve...

Half an hour later.

"Mina, you don’t need to stir anymore. Let it settle for a bit," Lucas said to Mina.

"Okay," Mina breathed a sigh of relief, shaking her arm.

Carve, carve...

Another half hour passed. Lucas put down the mold in his hand. Turning his head to look at the girls carving with their heads bowed in deep focus, he couldn’t help but grin.

"It should have settled by now," Lucas turned his head to look at the jar holding the plant ash water. He could clearly see two distinct layers: clean plant ash water on top, and the precipitated plant ash residue at the bottom.

"Master, does it still need stirring?" Ayesha asked curiously, her eyes showing a desire to get involved.

"I’ll let you do it in a moment," Lucas gently shook his head. Using another jar, he poured out the relatively clean plant ash water.

"Oh." Ayesha’s mold was just a circular indentation with no patterns whatsoever, which was why she had the time to stare at Lucas.

"Now we need to test the alkali content using a traditional method," Lucas took an egg and gently placed it into the jar of plant ash water.

In the end, he observed the egg hovering suspended in the water, neither sinking to the very bottom nor floating on the surface. This indicated that the alkali content in the plant ash water was acceptable.

"Eh? This is so magical," Ayesha exclaimed in surprise.

"This is the charm of chemistry," Lucas replied casually, before pouring the clean lard into the plant ash water.

In this hot summer weather, the lard didn’t solidify at all. If it were winter, the lard would have needed to be heated and melted first.

"Chemistry?" Ayesha was a bit bewildered. What was this again?

"Here, stir it at high speed," Lucas handed the jar to the cow-horned girl.

"Okay," Ayesha took it and immediately began stirring rapidly.

"Add some fragrant flower powder," Lucas poured the freshly crushed petal powder into the jar.

"This... is getting a bit thick and sticky..." Mina peeked her head over and commented.

More than ten minutes later.

"Alright, Ayesha, you can stop now," Lucas estimated that the materials had thoroughly blended together.

"Phew..." Ayesha breathed a sigh of relief, her breathing a bit rapid.

"Come, bring all the molds over," Lucas took the ceramic jar, picked up a spoon nearby, scooped out the viscous liquid from the jar, and poured it into the prepared molds next to him.

"Okay," The girls immediately pushed their oddly-shaped molds over.

This jar of semi-finished soap was just enough to fill everyone’s molds perfectly.

"Alright, once it solidifies, it will be ready to use," Lucas put down the spoon in his hand and smiled softly.

"Master, that’s it?" Annie’s eyes held astonishment. The process of making soap was much simpler than she had imagined.

However, the materials used to make the soap were things she never would have expected: actually lard, plant ash, fresh water, and flower powder.

"This..." Lucy stared blankly.

Now the rest of the group also came to their senses; the soap was just finished like that.

"This lacks any sense of mystery, doesn’t it..." Catherine complained. She originally thought that for such a high-end product like soap, the ingredients used would definitely be very precious.

But... They were all just simple everyday things.

Nicole carefully picked up a mold, brought it to her nose, and sniffed it. Instantly, a faint floral scent wafted out, completely devoid of the unique smell of lard; instead, it smelled wonderful.

"So this is how soap is made. How magical," Mina exclaimed in awe, a look of wonder in her eyes.

"Master, what exactly is the principle behind this? Is it magic?" Annie couldn’t quite understand. How could lard plus plant ash turn into soap?

"The main ingredients of soap are alkali and oils. In plant ash..." Lucas briefly explained the ingredients and principles of soap.

However, looking at the blank and utterly bewildered expressions on their faces after he finished, he knew he had wasted his breath.

Of course, the soap currently used on Earth had its raw materials mostly replaced by chemical compounds.

"We’ll check in a few hours to see if the soap is a success. If it is, you can all follow this method to make it yourselves in the future," Lucas said softly.

He was thinking that if they had an abundance of oils, they could open a soap shop. But they were primarily limited by raw materials, especially alkali.

The alkali content obtained through the traditional indigenous method was still a bit low, and the cleaning effect would definitely be inferior to the soap from Earth.
