Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 851 - 848 Tapping
Chapter 851: Chapter 848 Tapping
In the southern part of the Siacan Kingdom, on a tributary of the Whispering River, a large ship was sailing forward.
"We should be arriving soon," Jack stood at the bow, a trace of fatigue on his face. When he saw a port emerge in the previously monotonous river channel ahead, a smile finally appeared on his face.
"Slow down! Prepare to dock!" Jack shouted loudly.
"Yes, sir!" Everyone on the ship moved swiftly, taking their respective posts and standing by.
Because their destination, Gahu City, was right ahead, and the port of Gahu City was coming into view.
The port wasn’t large. After all, Gahu City was just a small city. Currently, only two or three small boats were moored at the port.
"Slow down! Lower the sails!"
"Lower the sails!"
Splash, splash, splash...
The ship slowly approached the port, its speed gradually grinding to a halt.
"Drop anchor!"
"Drop anchor!"
The shipwrights yelled. With a massive splash of water, the heavy iron anchor sank into the river.
"Set the gangway!"
Following a shout, the gangway was lowered and firmly secured onto the port.
"We’re finally here," Jack stretched his somewhat stiff body and began disembarking. Behind him followed Number One, Number Two, and Number Three of the Third war wolves squad, along with a squad of soldiers. The rest remained on board to guard the cargo.
Tap, tap, tap...
As soon as Jack stepped off the ship, a man at the port immediately came forward to greet him, smiling as he said, "You must be Jack. I am Moss."
"So you’re Moss," Jack raised an eyebrow. The man before him was wearing linen clothing, which was considered high-grade merchandise from within Sedona City.
Moss was a merchant. He used to buy linen in Sedona City and then sell it here in the south.
Before Jack departed from Sedona City, Annie had written a letter and had the postal courier deliver it to Moss, asking him to help negotiate for the rubber trees in Gahu City in advance.
Of course, he was given incentives. As long as he could successfully negotiate a lease for the land with the rubber trees for Sedona City, Annie would give him a certain discount price whenever he came to Sedona City for goods in the future.
"I am," Moss nodded, looking a bit shy. He was actually quite young, appearing to be only in his twenties—a young man.
"How did it go? The land lease..." Jack got straight to the point.
"It’s done. I’ve leased every piece of land planted with those trees. The lease is for fifty years, at a rent of one hundred gold coins per year. This was the absolute lowest price I could negotiate after putting in a lot of effort; the other party originally wanted one hundred and fifty gold coins a year," Moss scratched his head, looking a bit sheepish.
Jack’s eyes widened slightly, astonishment flashing in his depths. He hadn’t expected this unremarkable-looking young man to possess such capability!
Was a lease of one hundred gold coins a year expensive?
For the current Sedona City, it was truly nothing. Fifty years would only cost three thousand gold coins. From what he knew, rubber was of monumental importance—an indispensable component of Sedona City’s transportation reform.
"Let’s go. Take me to see the land," Jack nodded, keeping his expression neutral.
"That forest isn’t far from the port either, just a little way ahead. Gahu City is right next to it..." Moss introduced as they walked. He had already been staying in Gahu City for seven or eight days.
As Jack listened to his introduction, he observed him, nodding secretly to himself. This young man was a talent; perhaps he could recommend him to the Master.
Jack pushed these thoughts down as they arrived at the forest. Just as Moss had said, it truly wasn’t far from the port—only about a ten-minute walk.
When Jack saw the forest, he became even more certain of his inner thoughts. One hundred gold coins a year was an absolute steal!
The forest was massive, stretching as far as the eye could see. It was filled with Pará rubber trees. Every tree was tall, robust, and lush, clearly having grown for many years.
He learned from Moss that no one had paid any attention to this forest for a very long time, simply because no one knew what these trees could be used for.
A long time ago, some people would chop them down for firewood, but eventually, even those people gave up.
This was because the moment these trees were damaged, a sap would ooze out. Once it stuck to clothes or tools, it was incredibly difficult to wash off. Over time, everyone ignored them. This was one of the reasons Moss was able to lease the land so cheaply.
"Lord Jack, I will take you to find the City Lord here to sign the lease certificate," Moss said with a smile.
"Alright," Jack nodded, following Moss into the city.
With Moss’s introduction, they quickly met the City Lord of Gahu City, a scrawny old man.
Seeing that the principal had arrived, the old man wordlessly pulled out the parchment lease certificate and stamped it with his official seal, terrified that Jack might back out.
The corner of Jack’s eye twitched. He brought out Sedona City’s exclusive official seal and stamped it as well. With this, the land outside Gahu City belonged entirely to Sedona City for the next fifty years.
"Phew... done. That wasn’t hard at all," Jack breathed a sigh of relief. The first step of this mission was perfectly completed.
"Go, unload everything," Jack ordered Number One. He didn’t plan on staying in the city; he was going to start building houses directly in that forest.
"Yes, sir," Number One led his men away.
That very day, Jack spent money to hire people in Gahu City to start building fences around the forest. From now on, outsiders would not be permitted to enter casually.
Although the people of Gahu City were very curious about Jack’s actions, they didn’t ask questions. In fact, they were quite happy.
After all, by hiring them, they had money to earn. This paid far better than working for the nobles.
"Be careful, the seeds are poisonous. Do not eat them," Jack recalled Lucas’s words and warned his subordinates.
"Yes, sir," Everyone responded, then began to divide the labor and work cooperatively.
Jack led the members of the war wolves squad into the forest. He found a tree, pulled out the small knife he carried, and made a direct cut into the trunk, opening a gash.
After a while, a milky white liquid seeped out from the gash. Jack dabbed a little with his finger and rubbed it, a smile instantly appearing on his face.
"Don’t let it go to waste. Get a clay pot to catch it," Jack ordered.
"Yes, sir." Number One pulled a small clay pot from his linen bag and used hemp rope to tie it to the tree trunk. He then inserted a small wooden slip into the gash, and drops of milky white liquid slid down the wood into the clay pot.
"From now on, without my orders, no one is permitted to step foot in this forest," Jack said deeply. He was about to begin tapping rubber—this term had been taught to him by Lord Lucas.
"Yes, sir!" The seven members of the war wolves squad responded simultaneously.
Jack had hired quite a few people. The fence would be finished in about seven or eight days. During this time, he could start teaching the workers how to tap rubber, what time was best to tap, what weather conditions were unsuitable, which trees could be tapped more, and which trees should be tapped less. Memorizing all this would take time.
