Chapter 1620: Chapter 97: Fox and Rat Game (7)_4
"You’re so annoying!" Anna twisted Winters’ back with all her might in anger.
For the first time in his life, Winters made a sound like a dolphin.
"Something’s up!" A guard on patrol burst into the courtyard frantically.
"I’m fine!" Winters quickly shouted.
"Help! Someone’s taken His Excellency Montaigne hostage!" The guard’s voice was full of fear, but he still kicked the door open and entered.
A moment later.
"Haha," Winters stood by the door and said to the guard with a smile, "You can leave now."
"Your Excellency," the guard looked apologetic, "I’ll fix the door tomorrow."
"I can fix it myself," Winters tried to maintain a smile, "You did well, very vigilant, keep it up."
The guard saluted and quickly slipped away.
"I can’t imagine what rumors will spread tomorrow," Winters said with a wry smile as he supported his back and returned inside, "Maybe they won’t even wait until tomorrow."
"It’s your fault anyway!" Anna hugged a cushion and collapsed into a recliner, "I can’t face anyone now."
"What did I do? I just told you that I met the Oath Breaker’s daughter today, didn’t I?"
"There you go again!"
"I’m not lying to you! Really."
Anna’s expression started to shift from anger to shock and astonishment.
"Yes," Winters commented, "I went through the same emotional change today too."
Anna quickly shut the door and asked in a low voice, "Is it really... the Oath Breaker’s daughter, isn’t that... the Princess?"
"Yes," Winters said proudly, "And it’s not a Duke’s princess, or an Earl’s princess, but the Empire’s princess! The Oath Breaker’s daughter! The only daughter!"
Anna let out a low gasp.
"However," Winters coughed lightly and scratched the back of his head awkwardly, "To be exact, I didn’t see her with my own eyes. After what happened last time, Senior Moritz insisted that we follow reception protocol, only one person can meet at a time to avoid being caught altogether. So I didn’t go, nor did Brigadier General Gessa, it was Brigadier General Skur who went to see her. He said..."
"What did His Excellency Skur say?" Anna stared intently at Winters.
Winters thoroughly enjoyed the moment, deliberately pausing before saying firmly, "’Doesn’t look fake’!"
Anna gasped again, covering her mouth with both hands, "The Princess, why would she be in the Newly Reclaimed Land?"
"She said she’s here on a pilgrimage," Winters glanced at Anna and teased, "But it doesn’t look like that to me, if you ask me..."
Anna didn’t dare to take her eyes off him for a second.
Winters felt a bit embarrassed, "If you ask me, it looks like an elopement."
Anna turned red in an instant, then quickly went pale. This time, instead of using her hands, she grabbed a long needle from the fireplace rack and jabbed it towards Winters’ butt.
A moment later.
As Anna applied medicine to Winters, she suddenly couldn’t help but laugh.
Hearing the laughter, Winters, lying on the ground, turned his head in grievance and asked, "You’re still laughing?"
"I’m not laughing at you."
"Then what are you laughing at?"
"I’m laughing," Anna’s face lit up with a smile, "first at the prairie princess, and now at the Empire’s princess, it seems someone is destined to always attract princesses."
Winters suddenly felt a chill down his back.
"Having the Sea Blue’s princess is enough for me," he said.
"Sea Blue doesn’t have a princess."
"In my heart, you’re a princess," Winters decided to quickly end this unsettling topic. He pulled up his pants and got up swiftly, ignoring the unfinished application of the medicine, "Alright, I need to write a letter to Pierre."
"Writing again?"
"I feel there’s still something I haven’t instructed him about," Winters sighed as he walked to the desk, "I always feel there’s something else I want to remind him about."
"No wonder Lord Mason always says," Anna brought a candlestick from the dining table, "you favor young Michel too much."
"Because I always send Pierre to do things others don’t want to do," Upon hearing this, Winters couldn’t help but sigh again, "because Pierre always goes to do things for me that others don’t want to do.
"The defense of the western front is the top priority, if the west can’t be stabilized, and the Hurd Tribes keep scratching our backs, then there’s no hope for any progress on the eastern front either.
"But everyone knows the west is important, yet no one wants to go west because everyone knows that fighting to the east is the way to earn merit and advance, whereas staying in the west just means rolling in the mud with the Hurders, getting all filthy."
"You tell me," Winters asked Anna, "I send Pierre to the western front where no one wants to go, and he goes without a single complaint, does that count as favoritism? If anything, he favors me."
"Alright, alright," Anna laughed as she lit the candle, "Who doesn’t know that His Excellency the Blood Wolf is the most fair, never showing favoritism to anyone, Lord Mason is just jealous."
Winters hummed as he took out a sheet of paper, thought for a moment, then began writing swiftly.
Anna placed the candlestick at the corner of the table, resting her cheek on her hand, quietly staying by her lover’s side.
The world fell into darkness.
And this lamp remained lit until very late.
