Chapter 511: You Lied To Him

Dawn’s gaze was fixed outside the window, and her brows were pulled together as Lucy drove the car home.

She had called Adam, and he had confirmed from the receptionist that Jamal hadn’t been to the spa physically but had called hours ago to find out why she had not left with Lucy.

If he had not been to the spa, why did he claim he had been there but had not seen her?

And why did he call to confirm why she didn’t leave with Lucy?

Most importantly, why had he been silent the whole time instead of asking her about it?

Had he perhaps seen her with Adam outside the spa?

The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became.

She wanted to call him, but seeing the way he had been acting even while they were together told her that talking over the phone wouldn’t do any good.

Maybe it was best she paid him a visit at work after dropping off Josh at school the next day.

She hoped he would be more willing to talk after sleeping.

"Are you alright?" Lucy asked, breaking into her thoughts.

Dawn sighed as she turned to Lucy. "Yeah. I guess."

"As much as I would prefer not to interfere in your business unless you involve me, I’m becoming increasingly concerned. Is something going on between you and Jamal? Did you fight? He didn’t look good earlier. And you don’t look better yourself," Lucy said, looking at her with concern.

Dawn didn’t respond immediately.

She contemplated whether to tell Lucy about spending that much time with Adam or not.

After a moment, she decided to tell Lucy, figuring that since Jamal knew about it already, he was likely going to tell Lucy if she asked.

"Earlier today at the spa, I bumped into the manager..."

"Adam?" Lucy asked with a frown, wondering what that had to do with the question she asked.

Dawn nodded. "Yes. My phone fell in the process, and my screen got cracked. He insisted on fixing it, so he took me to the phone repair shop near the spa."

Lucy frowned. "You left the spa with him? Why did you leave without informing me? What if he was someone dangerous? You accompanied me to the spa..." Lucy trailed off when she realised she was in full Mom mode.

Lucy shook her head. "Never mind. Go ahead."

Seeing Lucy’s reaction, Dawn’s unease increased.

"After fixing the phone, I went in to get my nails done and then when I came out to wait for you, he suggested I wait in his office..."

This time Lucy turned to spare her a glance. "Adam suggested you wait in his office? Please don’t tell me you were alone with him in his office when I left," she said, recalling that Jamal had asked how Dawn could have missed her if she had been waiting at the reception.

Dawn drew in a deep breath. "We got talking and I lost track of time. And then by the time we called to ask reception if you were done, I was told you’d left already."

Lucy didn’t say anything. But the frown on her face was enough to tell Dawn that she disapproved.

"So that is the reason Jamal is upset?" Lucy finally asked after a while.

"I don’t know. I just called Adam to..."

"You called Adam? You both exchanged contacts?" Lucy asked, turning to look at Dawn again.

"As friends," Dawn said defensively. "There’s nothing wrong with being friends with the opposite sex, is there? Jamal has Mari and Emily."

Lucy shook her head. She had a lot to say about that, but seeing how defensive Dawn was being, she chose not to.

"You were saying something about calling Adam," Lucy reminded her.

"The receptionist said Jamal never came to the spa. But she said Jamal called earlier to find out why I didn’t leave with you, and he was told I had been in the office with the manager," Dawn explained.

Lucy’s brows drew together in confusion. "Why did Jamal call to ask them that instead of asking you?"

Dawn hesitated before responding. "He asked me. I didn’t tell him I was with Adam."

"You lied to him," Lucy said flatly.

Dawn said nothing but the accusation in Lucy’s tone was clear.

In spite of how much Lucy loved Dawn, she couldn’t help feeling annoyed on behalf of Jamal. Yes, she loved Dawn, but Jamal was a son to her, and she knew just how loyal Jamal had been to Dawn over the years.

Seeing Dawn’s display of disloyalty both annoyed and disappointed her, but she knew better than to let it show.

So, she remained silent.

When Lucy pulled the car up in front of the house, Dawn looked at her before she could get out. "I only gave Adam my number and chatted with him. Is that so wrong? Is it so wrong to want to have friends of my own?"

Lucy looked at her. "That’s not for me to answer, Dawn. That’s for you to answer. If you feel it was right, then you should have had no problem telling Jamal about it. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind Jamal exchanging contact with another female and spending hours chatting with them in his office. And before you talk about Mari and Emily again, I’d like to remind you that they are his childhood friends and basically family to him."

Without waiting for Dawn to respond, Lucy got out of the car and headed inside the house.

Lucy knew that she wasn’t handling it well, but she didn’t have it in her to pretend not to be disappointed when she was.

Tears gathered in Dawn’s eyes as she followed Lucy inside.

Maybe she had been wrong to lie to Jamal about the reason she’d not been there when Lucy left, but she had not done anything wrong.

She had only talked to Adam.

Seeing Lucy’s reaction sort of made Dawn believe that no matter what happened between her and Jamal, everyone was always going to take Jamal’s side.

Jamal was after all everyone’s favorite, and he was the reason she was here.
