Boring Rig 2.0
Back on shore, with the dome's structural work finally settled, attention shifted fully toward the drainage tunnel itself, and with it, toward the machine that would actually dig it.
"The original rig won't cut it," Arista said, laying out the aold blueprints alongside a fresh sheet. "That was pedal-powered, multiple players cranking away by hand, an improved adamantium version of the very first single-person rig I ever built. Fine for a shorter tunnel with time to spare. Not fine for ten kilometers, on a schedule that actually matters."
Petrov, reviewing the old specs, nodded slowly. "You want it steam-driven this time."
"Exactly. Same core boring mechanism, same adamantium cutting head: that part's already proven, no need to reinvent it. But the power source needs a complete overhaul. I want the same engine design we used on the zeppelin. Proven, reliable, considerably more consistent output than a dozen tired players pedaling in shifts."
"What about the submarine's engine?" Colm asked. "Compound E worked beautifully underwater."
"Won't work here," Arista said, already anticipating the question. "Compound E's entire function depends on catalyzing a reaction specifically in salt water. That's the whole design, seawater flowing through an active chamber, sustained heat generated from the reaction itself. We're tunneling through solid rock and continental soil this time, nowhere near an active seawater supply feeding the chamber. The compound would just sit there, inert, doing absolutely nothing without the specific fuel source it's built around."
"So back to the zeppelin's system," Claire said, already pulling up the old airship schematics. "Charcoal briquettes, hybrid boiler design, same proven output."
"Exactly that. We already know it works reliably, we already understand its fuel consumption rate, and unlike the submarine's system, it doesn't depend on any specific environmental input we won't have access to underground." Arista sketched the modified rig, the same boring head from her original design mounted now onto a considerably more robust drive assembly. "Steam engine replaces the old pedal-crank mechanism entirely. Same adamantium cutting edge, same rotational cutting principle, just powered by something that doesn't get tired after four hours."
Petrov reviewed the full design, cross-referencing it against the tunnel's planned route, ten kilometers, angled correctly from the shoreline down toward the dome's final connection point. "...At steam-driven output, how much faster does this actually move compared to the original?"
"Considerably faster, and considerably more consistent," Arista said. "The original rig's speed depended entirely on how many people were pedaling and how tired they'd gotten. This one just runs at a steady, predictable rate as long as the boiler's fed. Easier to actually schedule around, easier to project a real completion date instead of guessing based on crew stamina."
"...What happens to everything the rig actually cuts through, though?" Claire asked, glancing up from her own notes. "Ten kilometers of solid rock and soil doesn't just disappear. That's a genuinely enormous volume of debris that needs to go somewhere."
Arista paused, the question landing with the specific, familiar weight of a problem she'd somehow managed to overlook entirely. "...Huh. Fair point."
"Human chain, to start," Bram suggested, already thinking it through. "Bag it as it comes off the cutting head, pass it hand to hand back toward the entrance, same principle as an old bucket line for a fire."

"I can spare some of my own crew for that," Nettle offered, arms crossed. "Ship's not needing everyone right now, and most of the dome crew's free too, now that the structural work's done."
"That covers the first stretch," Petrov said. "But a static line stops making sense once the tunnel actually gets long. Nobody's standing shoulder to shoulder for ten straight kilometers."
"No, that part shifts eventually," Bram agreed. "Once the chain gets too long to hold as one continuous line, whoever's at the working end just starts walking the bags back to the nearest handoff point instead, relay-style, then somebody else carries it the rest of the way out."
Arista nodded slowly, the shape of it settling into place. "We'll need more hands than just the dome crew and Nettle's spare people for that, though, especially further in."
"I can ask the Republic," Gorthruk offered, arms crossed, already turning the request over. "Dwarves know how to move earth. It is, frankly, half of what we do. I could have a hundred, perhaps two hundred, here within the week, properly organized into shifts."
"...That would help enormously," Arista said, genuinely grateful. "Thank you, Gorthruk."
"Consider it professional courtesy," Gorthruk said, dry. "One tunnel-builder to another."
Bram, examining the finished blueprint, nodded slowly. "...So this is basically Boring Rig 1.0's grandchild. Same core idea, considerably more refined."
"Same fundamental principle I started with on day one," Arista agreed, grinning at the thought. "Dig through rock with a purpose-built machine instead of brute force alone. Just, better now. Steam instead of pedals, adamantium proven at scale instead of scrap iron and hope."
She rolled up the finished blueprint, satisfied, the whole project's final major system finally settled.
Construction moved fast, once the design was settled, the same familiar rhythm that had carried every previous machine from sketch to reality, each piece slotting into place with the practiced ease of a crew that had done this dozens of times before.
The boring head went together first, the same proven adamantium cutting geometry from the original rig, reinforced and scaled for sustained, continuous operation rather than the stop-start rhythm of tired players trading off shifts.
"Cutting edge looks good," Gorthruk said, inspecting the finished head with the same careful, professional eye he'd given her very first pickaxe. "Same pattern-welded structure. It should hold up considerably longer than the original, given the material quality alone."
The steam engine mounted behind it took shape over the following days, boiler, drive shaft, the same charcoal-briquette fuel system proven reliable across an entire ocean crossing, now repurposed for a considerably more straightforward job of steady, continuous rotation instead of altitude and thrust.
"...Feels almost simple, compared to everything else we've built," Claire admitted, checking the final assembly. "No pressure differential to fight. No salt water corrosion to manage. Just rock, and a machine built to cut through it steadily."
"That's kind of nice, actually," Arista said, grinning, watching the assembled rig gleam under the workshop lights. "Not everything has to be a crisis waiting to happen."
They broke ground at the shoreline on a clear, ordinary morning, no crowd this time, no forum-ready spectacle, just the core crew gathered to watch the boring head bite into the earth for the first time, steam venting steadily, the whole machine settling into a smooth, consistent rhythm within minutes.
"...Ten kilometers," Petrov said, watching the progress readout tick forward at a slow but entirely predictable rate. "At this pace, we're looking at a genuinely reasonable timeline. No guessing based on crew stamina this time. Just steady, measurable progress."
Arista stood at the tunnel's mouth, watching the rig work, feeling the same quiet satisfaction settle into her chest that had once carried her through a year and a half of tunnels and trains.
"...We started with a pickaxe," she said, mostly to herself, watching the machine steadily carve its way toward the coast's interior. "Now look at this thing."
Bram, standing beside her, nodded slowly. "Everything comes back around eventually."
"Everything comes back around eventually," Arista agreed, grinning, watching the rig disappear steadily into the earth, the last major piece of the entire project finally, properly underway. "Let's go finish this."
