By the tenth week, the dome's outer lattice had grown enough that the interior support system finally warranted proper attention, and Arista handed the job over entirely. Bram's project, start to finish, the pole lances he'd designed himself now waiting to be assembled and installed.
"Seven pieces per pole," she explained, laying out the components across the ship's deck. "Standard five-meter sections, threaded ends, exactly like the original design. But the top and bottom pieces are slightly different from the rest."
Bram picked up the bottom section, examining the reinforced screw point built into its base. "...Anchors the same way the foundation ring does."
"Same principle, smaller scale. Screws straight into the seabed, same as the ring anchors, giving each pole a solid, immovable base before you even start stacking sections on top." Arista handed him the top piece next, considerably different from the rest, a flat, sturdy mounting plate fitted with a dense pad of cloud material bonded across its upper face. "This one's the actual contact point, wherever the pole ends up meeting the dome's interior surface. Cloud foam cushion, same material logic as everything else, it doesn't fight the surface it touches. It flexes, absorbs any minor shift or settling, distributes the load evenly instead of creating one hard, unforgiving pressure point."
Bram turned the piece over, nodding slowly. "So the pole provides rigid support, but the actual connection to the dome itself stays soft, adaptive."
"Exactly. Rigid where rigidity's useful, flexible where flexibility actually matters." Arista handed him the full stack of components.
Bram turned one of the standard sections over, counting. "...Why thirty-five meters? The dome's only thirty at its peak."
"Because I want them angled," Arista said simply, already moving on. "Eight poles total. Placement's yours. You've got a good eye for structural symmetry at this point."
Bram took the job seriously, methodically threading section after section together underwater, working out the actual angles himself as he went, each pole climbing at a steady outward lean from its anchored base rather than running straight up, seven segments locking cleanly into place before the final cloud-foam cap settled snugly against the dome's curved interior, meeting the surface considerably earlier along its slope than a vertical pole would have ever reached.

He placed them with careful, deliberate spacing, North first, directly opposite the ruins' main entrance, then working steadily around in a clean, even compass pattern. Northeast. East. Southeast. South. Southwest. West. Northwest. Eight poles total, evenly distributed around the dome's full circumference, each one anchored deep into the seabed and angled outward to meet the curve at a different point along its slope.
"...That's a genuinely satisfying layout," Colm said, reviewing the finished placement from his mapping station, plotting each pole's exact position and angle against the dome's overall blueprint. "Perfectly even distribution, and the angled contact points actually track the curve properly instead of clustering at the peak. Load's spread as evenly as it possibly could be."
"I wanted it to actually look intentional," Bram admitted, surfacing after the final pole locked into place, genuine satisfaction plain in his voice. "Not just functional. Straight vertical poles would've all crowded toward the same point at the peak, so I figured angling them out to meet the curve earlier would spread things properly instead. If people are eventually going to walk through this thing, I want the support structure itself to look like it was designed, not just bolted on as an afterthought."
Claire ran the completed pressure calculations against the newly installed poles, checking load distribution across the whole structure. "...This is a meaningful improvement, more than a simple vertical layout would have managed. The dome's lattice alone was already sound, but this gives it genuine, well-distributed redundancy. Even if a section of the outer panels ever took unexpected stress, the load has somewhere else to go instead of concentrating entirely on the spline joints."
Arista studied the finished compass of support poles, rising evenly around the ancient ruins below, each one meeting the dome's curve at its own distinct point rather than all crowding toward the peak, genuinely proud of the quiet, careful work Bram had put into something that was, for once, entirely his own design from start to finish.
"...Good work," she said, simply, meaning it fully.
Bram allowed himself a small, satisfied grin, floating near his own finished handiwork. "...I would like it on record that this is the first thing on this entire project I built without you shoving me off a boat first."
"Character development," Arista said, grinning back. "Look at you. A whole structural engineer now."
"Don't get used to it," Bram said, though there was no real bite in it. "I'm sure you'll find a new way to throw me off something eventually."
"Probably," Arista admitted, entirely unrepentant. "But not today. Today you just built something genuinely good."
