Half-Hexagons
Arista unrolled a new blueprint across the table in her forge.
"Look," she said, tracing a finger along the bottom edge of the dome's lattice. "If we use standard hexagons all the way down to the foundation ring, we get a jagged, triangular sawtooth pattern where the curve meets the flat seabed. That means we'd need thirteen hundred separate custom corner pieces cast just to seal the bottom edge properly. That's a supply chain nightmare."
Bram leaned over the sketch. "So what's the plan? Circles instead?"
"Better," Arista said, grinning. "Half-hexagons. We cut them dead straight along the bottom edge. But here's the actual trick, Half-Hexagon Type-A gets an extended adamantium rod along its outer edge. Type-B gets the same rod, but on its inner edge instead."
She slid two small-scale wooden prototype pieces together across the table, a tenth of the actual size, fifty centimeters by twenty-five. The rods clicked cleanly into place with a satisfying clack, aligning perfectly with the mounting holes meant for the seabed below.
"They alternate," Arista continued. "Outer, inner, outer, inner, all the way around the ring. Two thick adamantium screws per rod, driven straight into the seabed. Zero gaps along the bottom, zero custom filler pieces needed, and the rods never cross or interfere with each other."
Bram stared at the scaled-down mockup, picked up one of the threaded prototype pieces, and turned it over in his hands. "...Strawberry, this is so simple it's almost illegal. Why don't they build bridges this way back in the real world?"
"Because the real world doesn't have eighty-level, Strength-stacked players who can screw adamantium anchors into a seabed by hand, underwater," Arista said, entirely matter-of-fact.
Thoth, watching from the doorway, his body still too large to fit properly into the workshop itself, tilted his dish, processing the design with quiet, focused attention.

"The design satisfies the requirements for optimal hydrostatic anchoring," Thoth reported, dish rotating slowly across the finished blueprint.
Nettle, examining the half-sized panels with a more practical eye, tilted her head. "...These won't qualify as shields anymore. That rod sticking out the bottom edge disqualifies the grip classification entirely, probably, a proper shield needs a clean, unbroken surface, not a mounting bar protruding straight through where a hand would need to go." She considered the stack of finished prototypes a moment longer. "But at half the size, we could probably transport the whole foundation ring on the ship itself, in a handful of runs, instead of relying on individual inventory carries at all."
Arista sat with that, delighted by the sheer, elegant efficiency of it all stacking together, foundation panels solved, transport solved, custom filler pieces eliminated entirely, all from one small shift in how the bottom edge was cut.
"...Okay," she said, already sketching the production numbers for the new half-hexagon variant. "Foundation ring's solved. Properly, this time. No sawtooth gaps, no thirteen hundred custom corners, just two clean panel types that lock together on their own."
"Three hundred and ten percent," Bram repeated, still staring at the analysis. "You improved on a design that already worked, purely because you didn't like the shape of the leftover gaps."
"That's basically my whole personality," Arista said, grinning, already reaching for fresh adamantium stock to start the first proper production batch. "Onward. Foundation that actually fits, this time."
Bram picked up the first finished prototype panel, turning it slowly in the light, and frowned.
"...These are curved."
"They're supposed to be curved," Arista said, not looking up from her notes. "It's a dome, Bram. Domes curve."
"No, I mean—" he held it up, angling it against the light so the subtle bend became more obvious. "It's curved more one way than the other. Bottom to top, it bends noticeably. Left to right, it's almost flat by comparison."
Arista looked up properly this time, and her whole face lit up.
"...You noticed that."
"Should I not have?"
"No, you absolutely should have, most people wouldn't catch that at a glance, it's a subtle difference." She grinned, genuinely delighted, already pulling her notebook over to show him the actual math behind it. "You're completely right. And there's a real reason for it, not just an aesthetic choice."
"...I assumed there was a reason. I was mostly just confused."
"Okay, think about the actual shape we're building," Arista said, sketching a rough cross-section. "If every panel curved identically in both directions, the same amount side-to-side as top-to-bottom, we wouldn't be building a dome at all. We'd be building something closer to a cube with rounded corners, because uniform curvature in every direction just gives you a sphere, or a cube if you flatten it wrong, not the specific, flattened shape we actually need."
Bram studied the sketch. "...So the curve has to match the actual proportions of the dome itself."

"Exactly. And our dome's proportions are extremely lopsided, if you actually stop and think about the numbers. It's a thousand meters across." She tapped the horizontal span on her sketch. "But it's only thirty meters tall."
Bram blinked. "...That's barely any height at all, compared to the width."
"Right. It's an incredibly wide, incredibly flat shape, more like a shallow dish stretched out over a huge area than anything resembling a proper round dome. Which means the curvature needed to sweep across that entire thousand-meter span is extremely gentle, almost flat, because you've got a massive amount of horizontal distance to gradually bend across." She tapped the vertical measurement next. "But reaching thirty meters of height, clearing the statue with room to spare, over that same relatively short vertical rise, that curve has to happen considerably faster, considerably tighter, because there's just less distance to work with in that direction."
"So the panels bend more steeply bottom-to-top," Bram said slowly, "because the dome needs to gain height fast, relative to how slowly it needs to spread out sideways."
"Exactly that." Arista beamed at him, genuinely proud. "If I'd used a uniform curve in every panel, ignoring that difference, the dome would either end up too tall and narrow, or too shallow and flat to actually clear the statue properly. Every single panel's curvature has to account for exactly where it sits in that lopsided proportion, steeper near the vertical rise, gentler along the horizontal sweep."
Bram turned the panel over once more, studying its actual proportions now rather than just the curve. "...The panel's longer in width than it is in height, too."
"You are correct," Arista said proudly.
"But you've been saying 'five by five' repeatedly this entire project. So why?"
"It's five meters tall, five-point-seven-seven wide," Arista admitted, entirely unbothered. "But saying 'point-seven-seven' every single time gets boring real quick. 'Five by five' is close enough for casual conversation. The actual specs are what matter for the recipe submission, not what rolls off the tongue easier in a workshop."
Bram set the panel down, considering the whole design with fresh, genuine respect. "...I didn't expect to actually understand the reasoning. I just noticed it looked weird."
"That's usually how the best questions start," Arista said, grinning. "You don't need to know the answer already. You just need to notice something's slightly off, and actually ask about it instead of assuming it doesn't matter."
"...I'm going to pretend that was a compliment about my engineering intuition."
"It absolutely was," Arista confirmed. "You've been around my projects long enough that you're starting to actually see the details instead of just holding things and getting thrown off boats."
"I would like both to be true simultaneously," Bram said, entirely serious. "I can have engineering intuition and keep getting thrown off boats. I don't see why those need to be mutually exclusive."
Arista laughed, already returning to her curvature calculations, genuinely pleased at watching her own chaotic obsession slowly, steadily rubbing off on someone who'd started this whole journey as nothing more than a very patient, very durable test subject.
"I've got an idea too," Bram said, still turning the panel over in his hands, the earlier curiosity apparently having settled into something more constructive. "For extra security. What if we build support poles, inside the dome, to reinforce the whole structure from underneath?"
Arista glanced up, genuinely surprised. "...Go on."
"The panels are strong on their own, the spline joints handle the lateral pressure beautifully: you've proven that already. But it's still a thousand-meter span holding back an entire ocean, and I don't love the idea of the whole thing relying purely on the panels themselves without any additional internal support." Bram grabbed a spare piece of scrap wood, sketching rough vertical lines from floor to ceiling across the blueprint. "What if we build modular support poles? Five meters per section, threaded ends so they screw together, stack them until you've got a full column reaching the dome's full thirty-meter height."
Arista sat with that, genuinely impressed. "...Distributed vertical support, instead of relying purely on the dome's own curvature to carry the entire load. That's not a bad idea at all. Redundancy's never a bad thing when you're talking about something this size holding back this much water."
"Right. And here's the actual clever part." Bram grinned, clearly building toward something. "Put a handle on it."
Arista blinked. "...A handle."
"A grip, same as the shield. Same exact trick." Bram was already sketching the handle placement, delighted with his own idea now. "Call it a Pole Lance. Five-meter modular sections, adamantium construction, screw-threaded ends, sturdy grip near the base."
Arista stared at him for a long, disbelieving moment, then burst out laughing.
"...You want to classify a thirty-meter structural support column as a melee weapon."
"I learned from the best," Bram said, entirely unrepentant. "If it works for a five-meter wall panel, it should work for a support pole. Same loophole, different shape. The system checks for a grip mechanism, not for whether the object in question makes any sense as a weapon."
They spent the better part of the afternoon forging an actual prototype section, five meters of solid, modular adamantium, threaded ends test-fitted against a matching piece until they screwed together cleanly, and, near the base, a sturdy, functional grip, welded on exactly the way the shield's had been.
Arista turned the finished prototype over once, satisfied, then pulled up the recipe submission interface, entering the pole's exact specifications, modular sections, threaded connections, structural-grade adamantium, grip mechanism included, and, in the category field, typed Lance.

Silence.
"...It worked," Bram said, staring at the acceptance notification with the specific, quiet satisfaction of a man who had finally, personally exploited the system instead of just watching Arista do it.
"It worked," Arista confirmed, delighted. "You just got your first recipe accepted. Congratulations, Master Blacksmith's Apprentice. You've officially graduated to 'person who breaks the classification system on purpose.'"
"...I would like that added to my actual title," Bram said, entirely serious.
"I'll bring it up with the system," Arista said, already sketching out the modular pole's actual structural placement within the dome's interior, cross-referencing load distribution against Claire's original pressure calculations. "Okay. Support poles, classified as lances, transportable the same way the shields are. Every construction crew member can carry both, same inventory logic, same drop-delivery method Nettle came up with."
Bram nodded, satisfied, watching the design come together with genuine, quiet pride in his own contribution for once. "...You know, I've spent two years being the person things happen to on this project. Catapults, trebuchets, hydras, boats."
"You're allowed to be the person things happen because of, occasionally," Arista said, grinning. "This is a good one, Bram. Genuinely. The dome's structurally better for it."
Bram allowed himself a small, satisfied smile, watching the pole lance's finished specifications settle into the master blueprint alongside everything else.
"...I'll take it," he said. "Now let's go build something that doesn't collapse on a mermaid statue."
